The buzz from the wine was starting to make the pain go away, or at least make me feel more numb to it as I sat at the bar, which Natasha was attending. Thor had invited me to join the party that Tony Stark was throwing at Avengers Tower, where the rest of the Avengers were mingling with the party guests.
Trent had left immediately after our fight, and I had not heard from him all evening. I figured that it was best to just let him go, and walk all of the anger out of his system. I had gotten the text from Thor five hours later and figured that I should attend this party to get my mind off of things.
I had carefully done my makeup to hide the mark on my face, though I was so conscious, I thought I could see Nat's gaze flicker to that part of my face as I spoke to her. She didn't question me about it though as she poured me another glass of wine.
I was on my third glass when I heard a familiar silk-like voice in my ear, causing me to jump, nearly spilling my wine all over me. "Do you plan on getting home yourself having that much wine?"
I turned to find Loki staring down at me with a sly smirk. I found my heart racing ridiculously fast in my chest. It wasn't that I always had this feeling when around my friend's brother. I just wasn't expecting him to sneak up on me like this, or be standing this close to me...
"I'll walk," I said, finally finding my voice.
"On the streets of Manhattan? A pretty thing like you? I think that unwise."
His blue eyes scanned my blushing face, and I saw his smirk immediately disappear when his eyes landed on my right eye. I knew by his expression that this wasn't some fleeting suspicion like I had seen on Nat's face. He reached a hand out to brush a strand of my hair away, and I instinctively flinched away.
"What happened to your eye?"
"W-what do you mean...?" I stammered.
"Don't play stupid with me, Y/N. You did your makeup thick but I can still see the swelling."
I tried my best to sound nonchalant. "Oh, this?" I put a hand up to touch the bruise gently. "The sidewalk outside my apartment was iced over and I slipped on some ice."
I thought I was being believable but Loki did not look convinced in the slightest.
"You know, even if I wasn't the God of Chaos and Lies, and could detect a lie before it was ever uttered, you've still always been a terrible liar." His gaze hardened and he crossed his arms over his chest.
I knew I couldn't lie to him but I stubbornly dug my heels in. "I-it's true though, I slipped and fell into the doorway, and then down the iced-over stairs and onto the sidewalk..." My lie just sounded worse the longer I spoke.
"You fell into the doorway?"
"Yes..."
"Inside your apartment?"
I nodded.
"So you 'fell' into the doorway—" He emphasized "fell" as if he was implying that I was pushed. "—and then slipped down the stairs outside your apartment, and then landed face first on the sidewalk. Correct?"
It was even more ludicrous when he repeated it all back to me, but I didn't deny any of it and simply nodded. "Yes... that is all correct."
Loki's ice-blue eyes stared into mine for a few moments before he finally said "Alright," and turned to leave, presumably to go and find his brother.
I finally allowed myself to relax when he left. I turned to find that Natasha had left the bar unattended so I walked around to top off my glass of wine.
I closed my eyes against the warm buzz in my chest that this particular brand always gave me as I imagined the spirits drowning away the past several hours into a haze.
I was pulled out of my temporary escape from reality when I felt a firm grip on my arm.
"What the hell do you think you're doing!? Do you know how long I've been looking for you?" Trent's eyes glared down at me, giving me that look that warned me I could very easily end up on the ground if I so much as breathed the wrong way.
I could barely get the words out. "I... you had been gone for several hours, and Thor texted me, a-and I thought I'd come here to kill some time while—"
"Did I fucking tell you that you could leave the apartment? Let alone to come to some party with another man? And I thought I told you to stop drinking!" He slapped my glass out of my hand, causing it to shatter on the floor in a mess of slivers and blood-red wine. My first instinct was to flinch away and protectively cover my face, but Trent firmly gripped my arm hard enough for it to bruise, and pulled me towards the exit. "We're going home."
I tried to wrench my arm away. "No—"
He spun around to face me, towering over me, not seeming to care about the crowd he had just attracted. "What!?"
Tony's voice rang throughout the commotion. "Hey, shithead, I don't think she wants you manhandling her."
The billionaire stalked toward my boyfriend, and he immediately backed away. Trent never wanted to fight someone his size, let alone someone who could very easily summon an iron suit and completely obliterate him.
"Right... sorry, Mr. Stark, I was just about to—"
Thor appeared at Trent's side, his wide smile and blond locks making him resemble a golden retriever. He placed an arm around Trent's shoulder as if they were old friends, though the way Trent's face drained of colour, anyone could tell that they were anything but. Trent had always hated that I was friends with Thor, not only because he was male, but because he was genuinely afraid of him.
"Why don't the three of us go outside and have a chat?" Thor said as if he were inviting Trent to have some drinks with him. I just realized that Loki was standing behind Thor, glaring at Trent with a look of pure hatred as if he were fantasizing about all the ways he wanted to rip him limb from limb.
Trent stammered as he stared up at the God of Thunder. "Uh... no, that's really okay—"
Thor cut him off, leaning in as his grip on his shoulders tightened. "No, I don't think it is, actually. And neither is your girlfriend's face."
Trent's gaze flickered back to me and I saw the look of betrayal and anger in his eyes. He was simply powerless to resist Thor dragging him outside and into the hallway with Loki close behind him to continue their "chat." I stood staring after them, still trying to process the entire situation as my ears were still ringing with shock.
I gasped when I felt a gentle hand on my arm guiding me toward the sofa and sighed in relief when I saw that it was Nat. She handed me a cold bottle of water. "Are you okay?"
I sipped the water slowly, trying to calm down. "Yeah... I'll be fine... oh, the wine—" I stood up to clean up the mess that Trent made when he knocked the glass out of my hands.
"Don't worry about that, I've got people who take care of that," Tony said while sitting down on the sofa across from us.
"I'm sorry, Tony..." I said while keeping my eyes down.
"What are you apologizing for? It was the douchebag who decided to crash the party and make a scene. He's lucky Banner is up in his room, there's no telling what would have happened to the place if your little boyfriend decided to pull what he did while he was here."
I shook my head. "Trent wouldn't have picked a fight with any of you. He's a coward."
Nat gently stroked my arm. "How long has this been going on?"
"I-I don't know... I don't really remember the first time he hit me..."
"Well, I don't think he'll be hitting anyone else," Tony said as he looked up to see Thor and Loki entering the room again.
My eyes widened in fear. They didn't kill him, did they? The idea of never having to live in fear under his roof again, of being free from him made a sense of relief wash over me. And then I immediately felt guilty for that feeling because I had loved Trent for years, and I was here silently celebrating his possible death.
"Don't worry, he'll live," Thor said while grabbing a beer and sitting down beside Tony. "He'll be a mouth breather for the next few weeks though, and I doubt he'll go a night without nightmares." He cast a smirk in Loki's direction, who was settling down on the sofa just a few feet away from me.
Loki was glaring at the floor as if he was debating on whether or not to go back outside and finish Trent off himself. One of his magical abilities was to be able to get into someone's mind and manipulate their memories. The idea of him mentally tormenting my boyfriend while Thor beat him up made my stomach queasy.
Not that Trent didn't fully deserve it, I reminded myself. But there was no telling what he would do to me once he fully recovered.
The small crowd that Trent had attracted with his uninvited presence had now dispersed, and the sound of mingled voices and clinking glasses flooded my hearing until I heard Rhodey's voice cut through the chatter at the front door. "Tony, there's a guy bloodied up at the bottom of your staircase."
My eyes flickered to Thor. "I-I thought you said you didn't—"
"I said 'he'll live,'" Thor said while draining his beer.
"Yes, but I thought that meant you'd have let him walk away!"
"Look, don't blame me. I roughed him up pretty good but the worst of what was done to him was mentally. You can blame Loki for that. I don't know what he pulled from his memories, but it was enough to make him fold in on himself."
I glanced at Loki, who was smirking darkly to himself, and I felt a strange sensation in my chest.
Tony didn't look concerned for the guy at all. "Just call an ambulance, and get the guy off my property," he said while scrolling through the contacts on his phone.
Tony told me that I was free to stay here for the night since it probably wasn't safe for me to go back to my apartment. I knew that it would never be safe for me to go home now and that Trent would get his revenge on me the moment he was physically able. But I still needed clothes.
I was suddenly so exhausted from the day's events, that that notion was immediately pushed to the back of my mind. I mumbled my thanks to Tony, and the next few moments were a blur. The fact that I could sleep up here without having to worry about Trent felt like a massive weight had been lifted off my shoulders and I now had permission to get the rest that I had been denied for the past two years.
Someone was leading me through the corridors of Avengers Tower. I could tell by their muscular frame that it was a man, but he was too lithe and lean to be Thor. When he led me through the door, I fell face down onto the large bed.
He lifted me as easily as he might a child, and tucked me under the covers. I could see his features due to the dim light coming out of the hallway pouring into the dark room.
"Loki..." I murmured. "I'm sorry..."
Loki pulled the blankets up around my shoulders, cocooning me in warmth. "What are you apologizing for, dear?"
I didn't know, honestly. I had always felt the need to apologize when things went wrong thanks to Trent. As if things would be different if I had not fallen into a relationship with him and brought out the worst in him.
Loki stroked the right side of my face gently, his naturally cool skin soothing to the bruised part of my face. I leaned into his touch, closing my eyes, too drunk and too tired to realize how intimate this must have been.
"None of this is your fault, Y/N. That... bastard is not going to hurt you ever again." He sounded like he was on the verge of tears. I tried to glance up at him to get a glance of his face, but the room was darkening in what felt like a mist. I realized he must have been using some kind of spell to make me relax and fall asleep faster.
"I...I need to get some clothes from my apartment..." I said, my head feeling like lead against the soft pillow. The fabric was soft and cool to the touch. I couldn't see in the room through the oncoming drowsiness, but I wondered if the pillowcases were made of silk.
"Me or Thor will take you there tomorrow to retrieve your things. But now's not the time to even think about that... get some rest. You need it." I felt his magic become thicker around me, and I could have sworn I felt his cold lips pressing against my forehead.
He left my side and I heard the bedroom door close, engulfing the entire room in darkness before I finally gave in to the exhaustion and whatever magic he had used to fall into a deep and dreamless slumber.
