hopefully make sense, lol. THANKS for
reading/reviewing!!!!!!
Kitty sat up, trying to suck in air but failing miserably.
She could feel it around her, the change in the air, the shift in some sort of
dynamic she had not been aware of yet.
It hurt. She frowned and looked
around almost frantically before setting her eyes on Storm. “Where’s Theresa?” she wheezed, breathing
shallowly. She hurt a lot more now than she had the last time she had
awakened. “I have… an idea.”
“She’s gone
to find Amara,” Storm soothed, pushing her back down to the ground. “The others will be back soon enough and we
can find the control center.”
Kitty shook
her head. “No, things are shifting…”
Storm’s
fingers flew to the younger woman’s side.
“Where?” She hesitated to touch her before
knowing where the pain was exactly.
Kitty shook
her head, batting Storm’s hand away.
“Outside, something’s happening!”
“How on
earth can you tell?” Storm sighed. “Lay down and rest.”
She rocked back on her heels, silently cursing Magneto or whoever had
created this mess for ever being born.
She could
not explain how she knew things were happening, but knew she did. It was as if she could feel the subtle changes
in the air, even inside, like she could sense the vibrations changing on the
very particles around her. She closed
her eyes and sighed. “I need Theresa. I
need to try something.”
Storm
nodded and Theresa trotted over, looking tired as anything and more than a
little nervous. “Whatcha need, Kit?” she asked lightly, raking her fingers
through her blonde hair. “Nothing
illegal, I hope.”
“Gimme a
hand up and come outside with me… How well can you control your powers?”
Theresa
looked askance at Storm, who merely shrugged, giving her a “humor the girl”
look. The Irish girl sighed. “A bit. Better than a few months ago but not as well
as a few months from now. Why do you
ask?”
“Ever hear
of something called harmonics?” Kitty gritted as she stood.
Theresa’s
brows shot up. “Yeah…
why? Oh… oh!” She shook her head vehemently. “You’d need
Banshee! He can control it!”
Storm did
not bother to remind her to refer to him as her father. Instead, she fixed Kitty with a pointed,
aggravated look. “No,” she said
sternly. “You will wait here and not
move until I tell you to. Theresa will keep an eye for Rogue and Jubilee.” She pointed, emphasizing her commands. “And if either of you try anything…beyond the
pale, you will be risking your lives and the lives of your friends. Think about that before you decide to know
what you’re doing in defiance of my direction.”
She glanced past Theresa towards the kitchen door. “I’m going to check
for Amara. Wait here. If I’m not back in five minutes, lock the
door and do not let anyone in. Even me.”
Theresa
held her peace until Storm had disappeared down the hallway. “Yes, I know what that is,” she replied
belatedly to Kitty, “but I think it’s damned near impossible to do in an
uncontrolled environment.”
Kitty
nodded. “And in the case of metal, it’s
mostly theoretical or impossible in general.”
She gritted her teeth and struggled into a sitting position. “Fucking hell,” she breathed, surprising
Theresa slightly. “Sorry. Sometimes I
turn into Lance, I think.”
“Amara
might find that interesting,” Theresa deadpanned, dropping to sit next to her. “So if you knew it wouldn’t work, why did you
ask?”
Kitty
looked slightly sheepish. “I had to get
rid of Storm or throw her off or something…
Look, the thing we we need to get to that control room. I know she has this set up like the Institute—the
Professor helped her get this place ready to be a school, that includes the
security measures, the training facilities and even the version of Cerebro.” Her eyes blazed with a strange form of
excitement. “Storm’s just worried,
nervous… I know what I’m doing! I k>I know the security system at the school… I’ve had to debug it so many times it’s insane, especially after Todd or Lance tries something
stupid so they can sneak out after hours.”
“Or Bobby
and St John tried to rig it to zap
the people from the school board,” Theresa added, rolling her eyes.
Kitty
grinned fleetingly. “The problem is, I hurt. A lot. I’m actually considering screaming at the
moment but I don’t want to draw attention to us.”
Theresa was
not sure if her friend was joking or not.
“Um… what do you need me to do then?”
“Help me up
and get me to the control room. I’ve
been thinking and I think I remember where it is in this place.”
The
slightly older girl stood and began helping Kitty carefully to her feet, so
slowly that it made her back ache. “How? You’ve never
seen it here and I doubt the Professor or Emma would just casually show off the
plans for the house to anyone passing by. And you’re not telepathic.” She paused and
frowned. “Are you?”
“Not as far
as I know, though that’d be helpful in a month when I start school again,” she
muttered, trying to distract herself. “There’s only so many places it can be due to the set up of
the house. It has to be somewhere safe,
somewhere secure, like at home. Somewhere not easily reachable…” She was off and running, talking quickly and
quietly, more to herself than to Theresa.
pan>pan>“Come on,” she said suddenly, “Storm’s going to be back soon and I don’t
want to run into her.”
_Great, _
Theresa thought to herself. _Paige was
right. You do have to be a little nuts
to stay here… _
