“Homme, if I have to go around another flight of stairs I will be hurting someone soon an’ it ain’t gonna be me.” Gambit felt like they have been travelling down for over an hour now, stairwell after stairwell, bare lights and steel siding. If he didn’t know any better he was beginning to think they were just rats in a hamster wheel.
“Soon… I can feel him.” Magneto’s gravelly voice had nearly startled him and he stumbled on a step.
“The master speaks! Almost thought you took a vow of silence there mon captain.”
“…merely listening Gambit, with all this metal around it was hard to locate him. But I did, he’s about 40 feet down, has a metal ring and belt buckle. I can’t sense many others, Rogue must still be in that body suit, no metal on her person. There are… two others, three in total to worry about.”
“…and one demi-god.” Magneto did not respond as they came up on another metal door. This one was basic, no alarm system and no lock, just a push bar. They stared at it for a moment before Mystique took a deep breath and pushed forward.
“This is it gentlemen… say your goodbyes now.” Gathering her strength she kicked the door in and bolted into the room. Two muscle men jumped from a small table, scattering their playing cards to the floor. Mystique jumped the first one, her dagger sliding neatly into the side of his neck. Gambit extended his staff and gave it a few twirls to distract the second one while he pulled out one of his playing cards. Giving it a quick kiss he charged the card and threw it at the man’s feet knocking him into the far wall.
‘De Queen of hearts never misses.’ Magneto gazed around the room for a moment before he spied the scientist in the corner. He held a small revolver and was pointed it directly at Magneto’s heart and in the shadows of his helmet he smiled.
‘Idiot.’ Raising his hand he twisted the metal of the ring on Sinister’s trigger finger and the man yelped in pain and dropped the gun. Magneto kept twisting the ring as he stalked his pray, making the man fall to his knees. Sinister grunted in pain and stared daggers at his attacker.
“You don’t know what you’re doing, you’re a fool. ALL OF YOU ARE FOOLS!” Gambit and Mystique stood quietly behind him, keeping their eyes searching for any more company. Magneto dispassionately smiled and crushed the ring around his finger, severing it from the rest of his body. Still the scientist did not scream and he began to lose his patience.
“Where. Is. She.” Sinister spit at Magneto’s feet and cradled his mangled hand.
“You cannot take down my master; he will destroy you like he will destroy the pathetic humans of this world.”
“I would answer the man Sinister. Our boss can destroy you right now.” Mystique crossed her arms over her chest and casually leaned against the work station that held a small laptop. Sinister’s eyes darted between Mystique and Magneto, calculating his odds before laughing. His voice echoed in the empty room and Gambit almost fidgeted from the crazy sound.
“You don’t understand, I don’t pull the strings on Anna, she’s the boss of me. She planned this whole thing you’re lovely Rogue, the girl with no past.”
“What are you talkin’ bout Homme?” Sinister giggled and shifted until he was kneeling on both of his knees.
“My master has plan, after plan, after plan to stop you all. I keep telling you, you’re just delaying what is meant to be.” Magneto had heard enough and using his power, pulled a metal sheet off of the far wall and used it to restrain the insane scientist. Mystique gagged him with a bit of scrap fabric before turning back to Magneto.
“Now what…? She’s obviously not here. What do we do now?” Magneto had his back turned to them and they watched his dark figure wander around the large room.
“She’s here…” Magneto turned and with a swipe of his hand pulled the metal sheets from the walls exposing the wiring underneath. They ran until meeting near the back wall and coiled into a single rope to feed under the floor. Gambit and Mystique looked at their feet and jumped back when the metal began to shiver.
“Careful Magneto, we don’t know what could be under there.” As more wiring was exposed they could start to hear the faint sounds of a motor running underneath their feet.
“Der, a cellar door.” As the last sheet of metal came away a wooden trap door came into focus with bright light illuminating the cracks. Mystique all but ran to it and tried to pry it open.
“It’s not budging, little help here Gambit.”
“Of course Cherie, step back please.” Gambit placed a finger on the door handle and charged it briefly before turning his back. A small pop and a billow of smoke, and the door was blown backward. Magneto floated over and peered down into the bright shaft.
“Mystique, go now and contact Xavier, I’m sure the x-men are half way here by now but I want to be sure. Gambit you stay here and make sure no one follows.”
“Now hang on Magneto, that’s my daughter…”
“…and that’s my future wife… please Mystique.” She looked into his dark helmet for a moment before turning and dashing back up the stairs. Magneto started to remove his cape to make his descent easier and Gambit started to shuffle a new deck of cards.
“Bring de petite back ya?” Magneto looked at the Cajun thief for a moment and nodded. Bracing himself for the final descent he lifted himself up into the air and slowly lowered himself into the hole.
“If anything happens… if I’m not back in 20 minutes, close the door and leave this place. I will either be coming out with her or neither of us will be coming at all.” Gambit nodded grimly and turned away as Magneto lowered himself into Hell. Gambit felt his heart break at the resolution that was in the man’s voice and prayed to anyone who would listen that he could get a miracle just this once. A muffled whimper from the corner made him lose count of his shuffle and he turned with a raised eyebrow to the scientist in the corner.
“Oh, don’t worry non, we haven’t forgotten ‘bout you.” Walking towards the scuttling man, Gambit regarded him carefully. “Ya know, I always wondered… what ticks in dat sick little brain of yours.” Turning his attention to the small laptop on the table he smiled a wolf’s grin and got to hacking.

‘I trapped you once I can do it again!’ Rogue dashed around his fist as Apocalypse tried to knock her down. He had nearly doubled in size since feeding on the psyche’s that had tried to protect her. Wolverine had caused some serious damage to his face before he was struck down. Shadowcat was close behind after trapping his feet in the solid stone and the Professor had just used the last of his strength to disguise Rogue from his sight for a bit longer. Now it was Magneto and Rogue who were currently trying to cut him back down to size to finish this fight once and for all.
‘Oh my dear Eshe, you’re strength has grown over the centuries. I look forward to feeling your strength run through my veins when this is finished. I will offer you a gift for your bravery, your friends will be the first to die.’ He pulled back on his strength and made a feint to throw a punch again at Rogue’s flying form; instead he used his momentum and continued his fist to Magneto who was not paying close enough attention.
‘Erik!’ She watched as his body somersaulted through the air and past the growing clouds. She felt her heart clench at the vision of his unconscious form but forced herself to turn away and face her growing nightmare. His large grotesque face smiled and leered at her trembling form and Rogue fought to keep from running.
‘This is your last chance Eshe, join me and together we’ll bring perfection to this world.’
‘You seem tah keep forgetting. Let me remind you again…’ Rogue flew close to his face avoiding his outstretched hands and called on the borrowed strength from her friends and enemies. She threw everything into her fist and screamed as it made contact with his skin.
‘I AM ROGUE!’ the colossus fell backwards from the force and crashed into the crumbling buildings from below. Rogue glided down gently and placed her hands on his bare arm and concentrated on the being underneath her.
‘... and you are En Sabah Nur… a mortal…. a mutant who thinks much too highly of himself.’ Slowly she started to feel the psyche’s flow back into her being, their voices crowded around her cheering her on, filling her with strength and love as En Sabah Nur shrank under her hands. ‘You are just as weak as the rest of us, you are nothing. No one will come looking for you, no one will miss you. I am stronger than you and I will defeat you! Rogue felt his body start to stir underneath her and she whimpered panicking slightly, the process wasn’t done, they’d never get another shot at this. Out of the corner of her eye she saw another pair of hands grasp his head and she looked up into Eshe’s eyes. Rogue smiled quickly and Eshe winked before they both concentrated on the man beneath them.
‘You are En Sabah Nur… a mortal… a mutant who thinks much too highly of himself. You are just as weak as the rest of us, you are nothing. No one will come looking for you, no one will miss you. I am stronger than you and I will defeat you! YOU ARE EN SABAH NUR… A MORTAL… A MUTANT WHO THINKS MUCH TOO HIGHLY OF HIMSELF. YOU ARE JUST AS WEAK AS THE REST OF US, YOU ARE NOTHING. NO ONE WILL COME LOOKING FOR YOU, NO ONE WILL MISS YOU. I AM STRONGER THAT YOU AND I WILL DEFEAT YOU!’ slowly and painfully he shrank before them until he was just a normal man. His eyes were glazed and he looked in the space above Rogue’s head. He seemed to be muttering something but Rogue couldn’t make it out. Leaning back she wiped the sweat from her forehead and nodded at Eshe who in turn looked to Nightcrawler.
‘Take him to the pyramid. We’ll be right behind you.’ Nightcrawler nodded and teleported En Sabah Nur away, to the final resting place for his spirit. Rogue shivered slightly as the wind turned cold and was grateful when Eshe wrapped her in a long black cloak.
‘We did well.’
‘Yeah… I’ah guess we did. Now what’s going to happen?’ Eshe reached for her hands and pulled her to stand before leading her towards the pyramid.
‘Now we lock that beast away in the safest dungeon of his own creating. We never speak of him again, and hopefully… one day… he will die without further incident.’ Rogue raised an eyebrow and snorted.
‘I’ahm apart of the x-men… I’ah highly doubt any mutant we’ve met knows how to die quietly.’ Eshe giggled as they entered the tomb and they both turned as one to face the large metal cocoon in the center of the floor.
‘I’ah never thought I’ah would be back in this room.’ She felt Eshe caress her back for a moment before fading away. Rogue stood alone now, like she did that night not that long ago. Her heart pounded in her chest and she slowly walked up to the side of the coffin. The sigils glowed a steady blue, prepared for the impromptu flight to someplace outside this world. En Sabah Nur’s face was harshly lined with age and he glared as Rogue approached.
‘I… will never be gone… my Eshe…’
‘Yeah well… you’ll be very very far away for a long, long time. Good bye En Sabah Nur.’ Closing the sides quickly, as she did before, Rogue squeezed her eyes tightly as the mechanics of his coffin came to life. The sigils continued to glow brightly and she could faintly hear his screams underneath the sound of engines roaring for takeoff. Shielding her eyes from the brightness she watched as the coffin hovered for a few more moments and then, nothing. The dust settled, and the silence felt oppressing, the only sound was her thrumming heartbeat. Rogue smiled to herself and almost jumped for joy.
‘He’s gone…. HE’S GONE!’
‘Great… now it’s my turn.’
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Magneto blinked rapidly as he came out of the tunnel to the blindingly bright room below. Spots decorated his vision and he struggled to see anything but light in the room. After a few moments of no one attacking him or shouting he briefly rubbed his eyes before peering out again. Finally he was able to focus on a chair, an end table, a bed. On that bed, he saw the still form of Rogue.
“Rogue…?”He hesitantly stepped forward and stopped when she shifted her weight. Her eye’s cracked open and blearily looked around the room before focusing on him. She scrunched her eyes in confusion and licked her lips.
“Am I dead?” Dropping to his knees Magneto held back the choked sob and crawled to the bed and held her hand in his.
“No… no my dear, you’re not dead. We’ve come to take you home. Are you alright? Does anything hurt? Where is Apocalypse?” She gave him a weak smile before closing her eyes again.
“He’s gone… he’s… finally gone… Erik, I’m so tired. Will you… will you hold me… please?” Erik kissed her hand lightly and carefully scooped her into his arms.
“Let’s go home my love; I’ll never let you go again.” She snuggled close into his embrace and sighed against his neck.
“I’ve missed this… all those times you’ve held me.” Magneto stopped for a moment and blinked before looking down at the woman in his arms. Slowly she lifted her head and looked back at Magneto with sleepy brown eyes, wait, brown eyes?
“What’s the matter, Erik?” Magneto threw her to the ground in disgust and using his power snagged two strips of metal he stored on his belt and restraints her wrists. “Erik! Erik what are you doing? It’s me… Anna!”
“No you are not. My ROGUE and I only had the chance to hold once. Only once, before she was taken from me. Now who are you and where is Apocalypse?” The “Rogue” in front of him pouted for a moment before smirking and pulling on the metal around her wrists and snapping free.
“Shame, thought I learned everything. Guess I need to go away for a while and study a bit more. Keep your bed warm for me will you?” The “Rogue” hovered in the air for a moment before bursting up and out of the tunnel Magneto had traveled down. He followed close behind passing a surprised Gambit and shooting up and out of a hole she made in the ceiling. As he broke through the dusty roof he was blinded for a moment by the rising sun until a black shadow crossed his vision and he was suddenly on the ground with the stink of sulfur in his nose.
“Traurig Mister Magneto, ze Professah wants to speak wit’ you.” Magneto shoved Nightcrawler off of him and searched the sky for Rogue. The clouds had grown thick and the fog settled around his senses. Turning his anger on Nightcrawler he stalked towards the younger mutant as he struggled to get up.
“You idiot, did you let her escape? Why?”
“Enough Magnus, Rogue is here, she is unharmed.” Turning swiftly he watched as Xavier rolled out of the x-jet, Cyclops was next to him holding Rogue’s limp form.
“Wh-what happened, Charles?” Xavier tilted his head to address Scott who disappeared inside the jet with Rogue.
“Mystique told us where you were and we just arrived as she flew out of the roof. Storm was able to distract her long enough for Jean and I to enter her mind and put her in a sleep like state. I don’t know what’s happened but… for now it seems the worst is behind us.” Magneto almost felt like sagging with relief but kept his posture as Gambit came out the front door with Sinister rolling in front of him. Xavier took one look and raised an eyebrow.
“Dis one here… has a lot of stories mon ami. Luckily for us, he keeps a journal.” Gambit waived a small laptop in the air and smiled. Magneto levitated the scientist and walked him into the jet before settling himself in a seat next to Mystique.
“Did she say anything?” Magneto shook his head, too tired to form words and closed his eyes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When they arrived at the mansion, Xavier escorted Scott and the x-men to his office with Rogue while Magneto and his remaining Alcoyte plus Mystique headed to the lower levels. He had a debt that still needed to be settled and with Xavier’s silent permission he was going to get it done and over with. As they entered the room that once held Shaw he noticed it was recently cleaned. The smell of lemons and disinfectant still lingered in the air and he sneered at its chemical aroma.
“Place him there.” Magneto indicated to the center of the room and Gambit complied by shoving him roughly so he fell to his knees. As Gambit secured the door and Mystique took the liberty of some revenge for herself, Magneto opened the laptop and reviewed the pages that were open.
2/13/04 4:26pm
She’s the last to leave the school again. X-men left 2 hours ago. Senior this year and she doesn’t seem too excited. She’s walking away from the mansion. Another visit to the park, no friends with her, seems lonely.
3/13/04 2:30pm
She’s been staring off into the ocean for a few hours now. She looks cold, she’s mumbled to herself a few times but too faint for me to catch her words. She is breathtaking against the gloomy clouds. She’s forgotten her makeup again.
4/25/04 8:47pm
She’s contacted me. Telepathy she’s borrowed it seems. She wanted to introduce me to someone, didn’t get a chance to make it that far. Her powers are still weak but growing, significantly, if I had to put a word to it. I need a sample of her blood to run some tests but her gifts are marvelous. I look forward to the next time she can contact me.
6/9/04 1:08am
She came to my lab today. Our first tests were a success. The master seemed pleased with the progress I’ve made with his technical designs. I’ve never seen equipment such as this. I’ll look forward to our experiments together.
9/2/04 3:24am
The master says he can’t continue for much longer, it drains her strength too much to continue these sessions. He’s given me my instructions and when to procure her once and for all. This creature, this Anna… her powers amaze me, her beauty dazzles me. He told me to stay away until the time was right, but I cannot. I must watch over her, watch over my Master. With her ability I have been able to replicate her powers for a short time. First test, shadow walking. I entered her room and used a powder to help her sleep. Her skin was so smooth beneath my hands, the dampner worked well. Her lips, softer than a rose petal, and the taste of her essence… I must have more.
Magneto shut the laptop with a disgusted grunt before he turned around to face the kneeling scientist. His eyes seemed to glow in the semi-lit room as he watched his captors circle him slowly. He was panting around the metal plate Magneto had fixated on his mouth. Gambit was shuffling his annoying deck of cards and Mystique was slowly running one of her daggers up and down the side of her cheek smirking as the sweat poured off of the trembling little man.
“You’ve cause quite a bit of fuss little man, stealing my daughter, brainwashing myself, what kind of vengeance would you strike if someone did this to you I wonder.” She kneeled down next to him and leaned close towards his ear. “Would you ruin that person’s life right back? Or ruin the person themselves…” She hissed in his ear causing him to jump slightly and she chuckled.
“Enough Mystique, I wish to speak with him alone.” She looked about ready to protest when Gambit tapped her on the shoulder and shook his head. With a disgruntled groan Mystique stomped from the room like a child with a grinning Cajun right behind her. Magneto stood passively for a few minutes letting the madman catch his breath before using his powers to squeeze the metal tube that surround his body. Sinister shouted behind his muzzle and his eyes bulged from the pressure. Magneto slowly counted to 5 before releasing the pressure and letting him fall to his side.
“That was nothing compared to the pain you have caused me Dr. Sinister. In another life, perhaps we could have gotten along, been partners in my quest for dominion over the humans. But that time has gone and you have hurt something precious to me.” Once again using his powers he levitated the hyperventilating man and turned him upside down so his blood rushed his nervous system.
“For every pain, for every ache you caused Rogue… I will be sure you are repaid with interest. For now you will stew in your own consciousness and solitude. When I come back for you… you have better have made peace with your God.” Magneto turned and left the man suspended in the air, he was not a forgiving man, and it would be long before he allowed Sinister the comfort of being released. As he removed his helmet to wipe the grim and sweat that solidified on his brow he felt Charles call to him.
‘Come to my office please, we have to talk.’ Placing his helmet back on he slowly turned and made his way to the far elevator to finally, finally see Rogue.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------“Director Fury, I’ve found some information you may like to see.” Nick Fury raised an eyebrow at his most trusted agent and looked down at the blue top secret folder.
“This can’t wait until morning Agent Coulsen?” Although he spoke his hesitance, he took the folder anyway and briefly scanned the hospital photo and records in front of him.
“I don’t think it can director. She came into the hospital this morning, a pair of homeless men found her in a dumpster. While they were rummaging in her pockets they saw she was still breathing. Luckily they were a pair of the good guys.” Fury looked at the name on file and for a brief moment felt an icy shiver run down his back.
“Can we retrieve her?”
“Already have a team on the way Sir.” Fury nodded and closed the folder slowly.
“And what about the requests of our friends, what do we know about this, En Saba Nur.” Coulsen shook his head, admitting their records were unfortunately blank to that regard.
Dismissing the agent, Fury turned towards his desk. Laying the folder down carefully, he sighed as he rested his fists on either side of the file. Coming to a silent agreement he reached for the black cordless phone on his desk and pressed one number, waiting for a few moments he laughed at the greeting on the other side.
“Logan, I’m going to call in my favor now. You have a person of special interest that I think may have a piece of a puzzle for us. We need to talk; I’ll find you at the Bayville Mall, 3 hours.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
