Chapter 2 A Midnight Haven

The drive took forty-seven minutes, every second of it a careful negotiation with the elements. Steve kept the truck at a steady crawl, his hands gripping the wheel with practiced ease as the headlights carved a narrow tunnel through the swirling white chaos. The windshield wipers worked overtime, scraping away layer after layer of snow, and the heater blasted at full strength, fighting a losing battle against the cold that seeped through the floorboards.

Beside him, Natasha sat with her hands folded in her lap, her posture rigid at first, her eyes fixed on the road ahead. But as they climbed higher into the hills, leaving the dim lights of the town behind, he noticed her brow furrowing. She was looking at the darkness outside, at the trees that loomed like skeletal sentinels on either side of the road, at the complete and total absence of civilization.

He could practically hear her thinking: Where is he taking me?

But then the road crested the hill, and the trees parted, and there it was.

The cabin sat nestled against a cluster of pines, its log walls dark and sturdy against the white landscape. Snow had piled on the roof in thick drifts, and the porch was covered in a pristine blanket that sparkled in the truck's headlights. A single window faced the driveway, dark and empty, but there was something inviting about the place nonetheless—a warmth that came not from light or heat, but from the simple promise of shelter.

Natasha leaned forward, her hands pressing against the dashboard, and her face transformed. The wariness melted away, replaced by a childlike wonder that made her look younger, softer, more vulnerable. "Oh, it's beautiful!" she exclaimed, her voice breathless with delight.

The movement made her coat gape open, and Steve's eyes betrayed him, darting to the shadowy valley between her breasts. The curve of her cleavage was visible even in the dim light, soft and inviting, and he felt his cock stir again, pressing insistently against his jeans. He forced his gaze back to the road, gripping the steering wheel tighter.

Focus, Rogers. She's a guest. A stranded traveler. Not a conquest.

He killed the engine, and the sudden silence was deafening. The wind howled around the truck, rattling the windows, and Steve could feel the cold seeping in already, hungry and eager. "Stay close to me," he said, reaching for the door handle. "The snow's deep, and I don't want you to slip."

They made their way across the lawn, the snow crunching beneath their feet, rising past his ankles and threatening to spill into her stylish boots. Steve kept a hand on her elbow, steadying her, guiding her toward the back door—the entrance he used most often, the one that led directly into the kitchen. The key turned with a familiar click, and then they were inside, and the warmth of the cabin wrapped around them like a blanket.

Natasha let out a sigh of relief, her shoulders sagging as the cold began to recede. She looked around the kitchen, her eyes taking in the rustic cabinets, the cast-iron stove, the wooden countertops worn smooth by years of use. Then she wandered into the living room, and her breath caught.

"Oh, Steve..."

Her voice was soft, almost reverent. He followed her gaze, seeing the cabin through her eyes for the first time in years. The vaulted ceiling with its exposed beams. The stone fireplace that dominated one wall, dark and empty but full of potential. The large windows that looked out onto the snow-covered trees, the glass frosted at the edges. And the furniture—the worn leather couch, the wooden coffee table, the bookshelves stuffed with volumes he'd collected over the years.

But it was the bearskin rug that captured her attention. She crossed the room and knelt beside it, her fingers tracing the fur with obvious fascination. "Where did you get this?" she asked, looking up at him with those green eyes.

"Alaska," he said, a hint of pride in his voice. "A few months ago. Hunted it myself."

Her eyes widened, and she looked at him with something like respect. "You hunted a bear?"

"Had to. He was getting too close to the cabin, getting into the trash. The authorities gave me permission." He shrugged, trying to seem casual, though he was secretly pleased by her reaction. "It was either him or me."

She laughed, a sound that was low and musical, and Steve felt it resonate somewhere deep in his chest. "You are full of surprises, Steve Rogers."

He cleared his throat, suddenly aware of the intimacy of the situation. They were alone, miles from anyone, in a cabin that felt smaller with every passing moment. "You must be hungry," he said, the words coming out rougher than he intended. "Let me prepare something to eat for you. You can go ahead and take a shower in my bedroom and change if you want."

Her eyes lit up again, and she nodded eagerly. "Thank you so much for your kindness."

"It's no big deal," he said, already turning toward the kitchen.

He watched her walk toward the bedroom, his eyes drawn to the sway of her hips, the gentle bounce of her ass beneath that thin coat. The curve was generous, full, the kind of ass that demanded to be grabbed, squeezed, spanked. His hands tingled with the phantom sensation, and he had to shake his head to clear the image.

Stop it. She's a guest.

The kitchen was his sanctuary, and he threw himself into the familiar routine of preparation. He pulled out a wooden cutting board and a sharp knife, selecting a ripe pear from the fruit bowl. The blade sliced through the flesh with satisfying precision, and he arranged the pieces on a plate in a careful fan pattern. Grapes followed, plump and purple, and then cubes of sharp cheddar cheese that he'd picked up from a local farmer's market. It was simple fare, but elegant, the kind of thing that looked more impressive than it was.

He boiled water for tea, choosing a mint herbal blend that was soothing and aromatic. The kettle whistled, and he poured the steaming liquid into two ceramic mugs, watching the leaves swirl and settle.

The silence was oppressive, broken only by the howl of the wind and the occasional creak of the cabin settling. Steve crossed to his stereo system—an old-fashioned setup with a turntable and a CD player, the kind of thing that required actual effort to use. He flipped through his collection, finally settling on a jazz compilation, the kind of smooth, sultry music that filled the space without demanding attention. The first notes of a saxophone drifted through the air, and he felt some of the tension leave his shoulders.

He lit the candles next, placing them on the mantle and the coffee table, their flames casting dancing shadows across the walls. Then he turned to the fireplace, arranging kindling and logs with practiced efficiency. The strike of a match, the flare of flame, and soon the fire was crackling merrily, filling the cabin with warmth and light.

The electricity flickered, then died, plunging the cabin into darkness save for the candles and the fire. Steve sighed, making a mental note to check the generator later. For now, the fire would have to be enough.

"Oh, it's so cozy."

Natasha's voice came from behind him, low and sultry, and Steve turned to face her.

His breath stopped.

She was wearing a cream-colored ensemble that was somewhere between lingerie and loungewear, a delicate sweater that hung loose on her frame, slipping off one shoulder to reveal the smooth curve of her collarbone. The fabric was thin, almost translucent, and he could see the shadow of her nipples beneath, dark and erect from the cold. Her legs were bare, long and milky, disappearing into the hem of the sweater that barely reached her thighs. And when she shifted, he caught a glimpse of wine-colored silk—panties, thin and delicate, that promised heaven beneath.

His mouth went dry. His cock hardened instantly, straining against his jeans, and he had to turn away, pretending to busy himself with the tea. "I, uh, I have tea ready," he said, his voice strained. "And some fruit and cheese."

She padded up beside him, her bare feet silent on the wooden floor, and he could smell her—strawberries and cream, warm and sweet, mixed with the clean scent of soap and water. Her hair was damp, curling at the ends, and her skin had a dewy freshness that made him want to lean in and taste her.

"Can I help?" she asked, her voice soft.

"No, I've got it." He grabbed the tray of food and the mugs of tea, his hands trembling slightly. "Why don't you take this to the rug by the fire? I'll be right there."

She nodded, taking the tray from him, and their fingers brushed. The contact was electric, a jolt that shot up his arm and settled in his chest. He watched her walk to the bearskin rug, her hips swaying with each step, and had to take a deep breath to steady himself.

This is going to be a long night.

He joined her on the rug, sitting close enough to feel the warmth radiating from her body. The fire crackled beside them, casting flickering shadows across her face, and she looked ethereal, almost unreal, like something out of a dream. She took a sip of the tea and let out a soft moan of approval.

"Mint," she said. "It's perfect."

They ate in comfortable silence at first, the jazz music filling the space between them. But soon the questions began, tentative at first, then more confident. She told him about her life in Moscow, about the modeling career that had taken her around the world, about the loneliness that came with constant travel. She spoke of her family—a mother she called every week, a father she hadn't seen in years—and of the dreams she still held onto, despite everything.

In turn, Steve found himself opening up in ways he hadn't expected. He told her about the security job, about the monotony of airport life, about the satisfaction of maintaining order in a world that seemed determined to descend into chaos. He told her about the cabin, about the years of labor it had taken to build it, about the sense of peace he found in its walls. And, eventually, he told her about the divorce.

"She cheated on me," he said, staring into the fire. "While I was traveling for work. Came home early, found her in our bed with someone else." He laughed, but there was no humor in it. "I guess I wasn't enough for her."

Natasha's hand found his, her fingers intertwining with his own. "She was a fool," she said softly. "Any woman would be lucky to have a man like you."

He looked at her, at the sincerity in her eyes, and felt something shift in his chest. "You don't even know me."

"I know enough," she said. "You're kind. You're generous. You took in a stranger and gave her shelter without asking for anything in return." She squeezed his hand. "That says more than you know."

They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of her words hanging between them. Then she leaned closer, her shoulder brushing against his, and the scent of strawberries and cream enveloped him again.

"Your accent is so cute," she said, a hint of playfulness in her voice.

He grinned, grateful for the shift in mood. "So is yours."

She shook her head, her hair brushing against his cheek. "I like yours better," she murmured, and there was something in her voice—a slyness, a flirtatious edge—that made his pulse quicken.

Then her eyes widened, and she sat up straight, clapping her hands together. "Oh! I have an idea!"

She was on her feet before he could respond, crossing to her bag with an energy that seemed almost manic. He watched her bend over, her sweater riding up to reveal the curve of her ass, the wine-colored silk of her panties stretched tight across her skin. His mouth went dry again, and he shifted on the rug, trying to find a position that didn't make his erection so obvious.

When she returned, she was holding a book. It was old, the cover worn and faded, the pages yellowed with age. She held it out to him like an offering.

"Can you read to me?"

Steve blinked. "What?"

Her eyes turned pleading, wide and vulnerable, and he felt his resistance crumble. Those green eyes were his undoing, he realized. If she kept looking at him like that, he would give her anything she asked for. Anything at all.

"Please?" she asked softly, her shoulder bumping against his.

He sighed, a sound of resignation that was also, somehow, a sound of surrender. "Sure. I'll read to you."

She laughed, a sound of pure, unadulterated joy, and threw her arms around him. Her body pressed against his, her breasts soft and warm against his chest, and he could feel the hard peaks of her nipples through the thin fabric of her sweater. His cock throbbed, aching with need, and he had to clench his jaw to keep from groaning.

She pulled back, seemingly unaware of the effect she was having on him, and settled beside him on the rug, her leg brushing against his. She opened the book to a random page and handed it to him, then leaned her head against his shoulder.

"Read to me, Steve," she whispered.

He looked down at the page, the words blurring before his eyes. He could feel her breath on his neck, the warmth of her body pressed against his side, the gentle rise and fall of her chest as she breathed. The fire crackled, the jazz played on, and somewhere in the distance, the wind howled like a hungry animal.

This is going to be a long night, he thought again.

And for the first time, he wasn't sure if that was a warning or a promise.
