I felt moisture running down the side of my face as the same bleak walls greeted me as they had every morning. The same four walls, the same bed partition curtain, the same white bed sheets, the steady ‘beep’ on the monitors and the IV drip, and again more strands of fiery red left upon my pillow as I raised my head.
The flood I’d been fighting the last little while crashes through and the tears fall like rapid rain drops onto my hospital sheets, my shoulders slightly trembling as I cry. I’m tired. I’m so tired of this. I’ve begun to feel in recent days that this is all I’ve ever known. I don’t recall what the sun feels like, or the grass beneath my feet, the feel of a gentle wind tossing my hair in every which way as I struggle frantically to keep my hair from being too badly messed up by it. I miss it. I miss the outdoors.
I’m trapped though. I’m a prisoner within my own body, my own room. I’m going to die forgetting what it feels like to be outside. I want to run with Jason, I want to chase butterflies, and watch the clouds in the summer sky. I want to see the sun, feel it on my skin. I want to smell the air after a rain storm. But it’s hopeless. The doctor told us yesterday, my only hope now is a bone marrow transplant… the only candidate is my father thus far, and there’s no guarantee he’ll be a match. Mom died in child birth… I have no siblings.
So for once, can’t they just let me be a kid again? That’s all I want.
Hearing footsteps approaching the doorway, 13 year old Elizabeth Stoner quickly hid the note book under the pillow and placed the pen on the night table.
A young teenage boy with black hair and blue-green heterochromia approached her bed, wearing a mask and a clothing shield. Beneath the mask, she could tell he was smiling as he sat on the edge of her bed, and greeted her, “Hi Liz.”
“Hi Jason,” Liz replied, trying to keep her voice steady. Jason watched her expression for a moment, his eyes betraying his study before he asked the question, “What’s upset you?”
“Everything,” Liz admitted, wiping a newly straying tear from her cheek.
“My Dad doesn’t visit me… just you and Uncle Jimmy. I’m not getting any better, I feel like a prisoner in my own bedroom, I can’t play outside… I don’t even remember what it feels like to be outside… I don’t think I’ll ever be out there again,” Liz rambled before harshly biting her lower lip.
“I’m scared I’m going to die not being me but….just being a sickly girl kept from having the last bit of her childhood,” Elizabeth concluded, tears following silently and freely from her now.
Jason’s hand came up from the bed sheets as he gently wiped his thumb against her tears, “You’re not going to die, Lizzie.”
Elizabeth closed her eyes and fought hard to keep her composure. The walls of the room gave away to green hills, a clear blue sky and a bright warm sun, gently kissing her skin.
Elizabeth looked around, “Wait… this isn’t real…. Is it?”
“It’s as real as we want it to be,” a familiar voice replied.
Elizabeth spun around and saw Jason, casually dressed with his hands in his pants pockets.
Liz slightly cocked her head to the side before inquisitively repeating, “As I want it to be?”
Jason gave a shy smile and nodded as he answered, “Yeah…. This is what I went to boarding school for. It’s a special school… for mutants. I went to learn how to control it.”
Elizabeth let out a gasp of surprise as she looked around, “Then…. It’s an illusion? I- ”
Jason interrupted, “I wanted to show you, but you’re so sad I… I can’t chance taking you outside and exposing you to something that could kill you…. But you being cooped up is killing you in a different way. This is the first time… the first time I’ve ever been grateful to be able to make these illusions. Maybe it isn’t the real thing, Elizabeth but… you can still feel it, smell it, hear it, right?”
Elizabeth nodded, “Yes… it’s like it’s really happening.”
She giggled, spinning in a circle, the refreshingly cool blades of grass tickling her feet, “it’s amazing…. It’s really cool you can do this, Jay-Jay.”
Jason smiled as he laid down on the grass, “come lay with me.”
Elizabeth smiled as she laid next to Jason, and blinked feeling her head full of her vibrant red hair once more.
“Jason?”
“Hmm?” He replied.
“If I don’t make it… please don’t forget me,” Elizabeth whispered.
“Don’t talk like that,” Jason almost scolded.
“Please promise me,” Liz pleaded.
Silence. Silence that seemed to last an eternity and keep the earth from spinning on its axis before Jason softly replied, “I could never forget you.”
She felt him shifting closer to her, but could tell his eyes were up at the sky. He breathed out a whisper of something she couldn’t quite make out.
‘Maybe it’s best that I don’t know,’ Liz thought to herself.
16 year old Elizabeth Stoner covered her mouth, unsure if it was a reaction to try to keep the vomit from spilling out, or to muffle the distressed sob that threatened to escape. Either or felt completely possible while her eyes burned harshly from flooding with tears.
She’d stumbled across William Stryker’s lab, the weapon X project in Department K, Jason’s frozen solid body in a cryogenic stasis tube.
Silently a hand was placed on Elizabeth’s shoulder, and she spun to see her father, Colonel Rick Stoner, his expression a mixture of horror and concern, “Elizabeth.”
“Daddy… do something… you can do something, right?” Elizabeth asked.
Colonel Stoner gave a saddened expression to his daughter that said it all. While he wished he could, Stryker was acting on higher authority, above her father’s level of command.
“Then I will,” Elizabeth resolved.
“Elizabeth?”
“It isn’t fair that he’s doing this to him, Dad. Jason’s a kind man…. He just. He knew how much his parents hated his ability… that’s all. That’s why…” Elizabeth began before looking back to Jason’s frozen form.
“I promise, Jason, there will be a day where I can save you… when I will be the first female president of the United States, and I will order this operation to shut down. That’s my promise to you, my old friend,” Liz vowed, she raised her right arm placing her open palm on the glass of the cryogenic device.
“You didn’t give up on me… even when I’d given up on myself. I won’t abandon you. If I lose track of you…. If I have to go away… I will find you again. I swear it on my mother’s grave,” Elizabeth swore.
“Your godfather’s waiting, Liz,” Rick interrupted after a moment.
Elizabeth hesitated before leaving the room with Rick. Jason continued his empty gaze, a look of sheer anger deeply embedded into his face.
‘I’m sorry I couldn’t protect you, not yet… but I will,’ Liz quietly promised, a tear slipping out of her eye and running down her cheek.
“I could never forget you,” Jason’s voice echoed in her mind.
‘I won’t forget you either, Jason…. I’ll be back for you. Someday, when I can save you, just like you saved me that day. If it takes til my last breath, I’ll make it happen. I owe you that much.’
