X-Men: Newcomer.
Chapter One.
It was a bright sunny morning, at JFK Airport, as the young dark haired, light skinned girl wearing a purple shirt and green pants stepped from the baggage claim with her bag in hand. She looked around as if she was waiting for someone before she walked to the curb, raised her hand up calling forth a cab.
Soon, a yellow cab came pulling up to the curb as the cabby looked over at her, as she climbed into the back seat, after putting the small suitcase in the backseat with her. “Please take me to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, in . . .” She pulled out the envelope and read out the address to the driver.
The driver nodded as he flipped the flag up and drove towards North Salem. The driver tried to make some small talk with the kid but when he looked in his mirror he noticed that the kid was asleep. “Long flight I bet.” And he continued on with his drive towards the address.
It was couple hours before he stopped at the front gate of the school. He climbed out of the taxi, opened her door to gently shake her awake, talking to her as he did so. “Miss, we’re here at the school.”
She opened her eyes to see the kind cab driver kneeling next to her. “Oh, I’m sorry I fell asleep.”
The cab driver smiled softly. “Flying takes a lot out of people. You aren’t the first one to fall asleep in my cab. But we’re here at the school gates.”
Tamia looked over and saw the gate. “How much do I owe you?”
“$70 even, I added the tip to it so you don’t have to worry about it.” The cab driver said.
“Here you go.” The young girl handed him a bill and picked up her bag from the floor, climbing from of the cab.
“Miss, this is a hundred dollar bill!” He exclaimed shocked.
The young girl nodded. “You earned the extra tip.”
“Thank you, but I really should drive you the rest of the way up to the main door.” He said.
“I’ll be fine walking to the main door myself.” Tamia replied.
“There will be no need to be walking alone, Ms. Finn, I’ll be escorting you to the mansion.” Spoke a male voice coming from the gate.
They turned to see a young man wearing a yellow shirt, blue jeans and sunglasses standing there. “Come with me, Ms. Finn. We need to get your stuff taken care of before we get you into a class.”
Tamia turned to the cab driver and thanked him before they watched him drive away. She turned to look at the young man who stood next to her. “So you know my name, sir?”
“Yes, Tamia, we have been expecting you.” Scott said, as he reached down to pick up the bag. “Please don’t call me sir, its Scott,”
“I’ll take it . . . uh . . . Scott.” Tamia replied, as she lifted the bag up and she looked towards the gate. “So . . . what is this place really do for people like me?”
“Yes, this place is a safe haven for mutants to learn how to use their powers in a safe environment where no one will be harmed.” Scott said, as they walked down the road.
“What are your powers, Scott?”
Scott pointed to the lake that they were walking by and lifted up his shades as a ruby beam of light went shooting into the lake sending water up into the air. “Optic laser blasts. Totally controlled by my shades . . . if I don’t have them on, the blasts come out every time I open my eyes. What about you?”
“White flare teleportation, totally controlled by my emotion levels.”
“In other words?”
“If I am stressed, shocked, in fear, or surprised by anything . . . I will teleport away in a blast of white light.” Tamia replied. She looked up at the young man with a very cold tone in her voice, spoke. “I’m hoping here . . . I’ll be able to get control to where I can teleport without needing to be stressed, shocked, surprised or being in fear by anything.”
“I’m sure that the Professor will be able to help you with that.” Scott said, with a grin. “He’s a genius about that stuff.”
“Well, I hope so.” Tamia stated. “So I’ll be able to learn how to use my powers here?”
“Yes, fully with the aid from the other teachers and myself.” Scott replied, as they neared the school itself. Scott noticed the other students playing in the field near to the main door, quietly observing the new girl who was walking in with him. He made a nod as he wanted to see if what he was told was real or just a story to keep from practicing.
“Guten Morgen,” spoke a German voice coming from behind them. The next thing, either men realized that their eyes were blinded by a white light.
Scott looked to his right to see Kurt standing there rubbing his eyes but Tamia was gone. He started to look around his area, when he heard a voice coming from the rooftop. “How did you get up there?”
“I sort of teleported up here, now, if you would can you tell me how to get down from here, please?” asked Tamia, as she looked around the roof for a way to come down.
Scott looked up at her. “Can’t you teleport down?”
“I’m not spooked so . . .” Tamia replied. “My powers won’t work.”
“I’ll go get her.” Kurt said, as he vanished in a puff of black smoke. He appeared next to her. “Sorry, for spooking you earlier. I didn’t mean to.”
“Well, that’s okay. I should have been more aware of my surroundings better.” Tamia said, with a slight smile on her face which faded fast “So, you’re a teleporter too?”
Kurt smiled as he nodded. “One that has a devilish appearance and the brimstone scent left behind. Your teleport is far different than mine.”
“Yeah, but they have a side effect that I am starting to get right now.” Tamia whispered, glancing at the blue-skinned male.
“Why, Tamia?” he asked. He had noticed the tinge of green appearing around her lips.
“I need the ladies’ room or I’ll be barfing on the roof.” Tamia whispered softly.
“Oh, right. Scott, I’m taking her to the ladies room.” Kurt yelled down and both of them disappeared in a puff of black smelly smoke.
Tamia rushed from Kurt’s side and into the ladies’ room and made it in time. A few minutes later, Tamia came out of the ladies’ room rubbing her head with her hands. “That is a little better, but my migraine is fast approaching.”
Scott looked at Kurt before turning his gaze on Tamia. “So you get migraines after using your powers?” Tamia only nodded. “Okay, that does prove to be problematic in training you to use them properly.”
“I hope . . . Professor Xavier doesn’t mind not seeing me immediately but my migraine is starting to pick up its intensity.” Tamia stated, as she looked at them.
“Well, he’ll ‘talk’ to you mentally then. This way, please?” Scott said, as he walked down the corridor towards another corridor.
Tamia only nodded as she followed him with her eyes barely open since the dull light of the hallway was starting to make her head spin. She hoped he would be quick about it, so she could sleep the pain away after she took her pill. Her hand reached for her purse that was hanging over her shoulders and reached for her pill bottle. She looked at it and wondered if she could figure out a way to get her prescription transferred from the pharmacy in Glendale to here.
‘I’m sure we will be able to do that, Miss Finn.’ spoke a male voice in her head.
Tamia stopped moving forth. “Who said that?”
Scott and Kurt turned to look at her. Scott smiled. “That’s the Professor. He’s a telepath.”
Tamia nodded slowly. “So he knows I am contending with a migraine?”
‘Yes, I do.’ spoke Professor Xavier, projecting an astral form of himself to them.
Scott looked at the image. “Shall I go get Ororo to take her to the girls’ dorms after she’s checked in?”
‘It would be best to take her to the medical room for now. Her pills will not help her, she’ll need a shot, that will put her out for twelve to fourteen hours.’ spoke the Professor. ‘When she recovers, Ororo can escort her to the girls’ dorm and to her room.’
“Most likely twenty hours. Some of my migraines can go for that long.” Tamia stated in a low whisper.
‘Very well, I’ll be quick as possible while you are standing here, Ms. Finn.’ Professor Xavier said. He quickly spoke to her about her grades in her other school and talked about what courses he’ll be putting her in. He then, turned to Kurt and told him to go to the medical room and alert the doctor there about Tamia’s appearance. Kurt nodded and vanished in a puff of black smelly smoke. He went on about the other normal courses that he’ll have her in. ‘If there is any problems in the classes as you need extra help, do not hesitate to ask the teacher for help. We will not punish you for asking for help, Tamia. Scott, I need to see her personally to give her the lists of all the classes she’ll be in.’
“That’s good, I was worried.” Tamia stated.
Scott nodded as he started to head in that direction, he looked over at her. “Why worry about that?”
“Well, the teachers in my old school really seemed not to really want to help us and said that we need to figure out the problems you and occasionally, I will get very lippy with them and end up getting sent to the office.” Tamia whispered.
“Ah, now I understand the response you gave.” Scott nodded understandably.
“So, I tend to figure out the problems myself even if it means hitting my head against the wall,”
“You don’t actually do that, do you?” asked Scott. She looked at him curiously. “The hitting the wall with your head.”
Tamia smiled as she shook her head. “I just have some minor problems with math that’s all, which is really head banging to me. I can do a little up to five in multiplication table but anything above that number is hard for me.”
“Is that what causes you to get lippy with the teachers?” asked Scott.
“Yes, they don’t want to help us with figuring out problems even if we try everything to figure it out ourselves.” Tamia stated, as they walked towards headmaster’s office.
Scott knocked on the door before he entered the room. “Professor, here’s Ms. Tamia Finn.”
The first thing, Tamia thought when she saw Professor Xavier was that he was a kind but stern man. She had read his bio on the web site so she didn’t look shocked when she saw him wheel around his desk to approach her. She walked towards him with her hand extended to greet him. “Professor.” She said, politely.
“I see you are not shocked by my condition.” Professor stated, as he looked at her shaking her hand gently. He waved towards one of the chairs as he nudged his chair in the directions of the chairs.
“I read your bio on the web site. So I know about your condition.” Tamia replied, as she sat down in the chair looking towards him.
“I’ll be brief since you will need to get to the medical room shortly. Here is the list of the classes you will be in. Most of them are the typical high school courses and some of them are to help you train your gift, Ms. Finn. If there is any problem with the schedule, let us know immediately.” Professor Xavier said, handing her the list.
Tamia quickly ran her eyes over it. She saw the word music and looked up. “I don’t do music. I’ll port out of that class faster than I did earlier. I don’t play an instrument or sing and would rather be in the kitchen cooking than singing or playing an instrument.”
“Oh, it’s not about singing or playing an instrument, just listening to music from all different ages and styles.” Professor stated. He realized that Tamia’s school papers did say that she refused to play an instrument in music and she was not one who was interested in playing one.
“Well, as long as it is that. I’ll be okay with it, but if it happens, I’ll be porting out of there.” Tamia stated, calmly. Her head was now to the point where she could barely open her eyes no more than a half of half an inch and the light of the room though dim was making her head throb even more.
“If that’s all the problems you have with the class list, Kurt will take you to the medical room?” Charles asked. Tamia slowly nodded. Charles turned to Kurt and Scott. “Kurt, take her to the medical room. Scott, I require a word with you.”
“Yes Professor.” Scott replied. He knew what he was going to say.
Kurt nodded as he stepped by Tamia’s side and wrapped his arms around her. The next thing, Tamia noticed was that they were in a medical room. A blue furred male was perched on the desk reading a medical journal. “Hank, I brought Ms. Finn. She requires the shot that Charles told you about.”
“Ah, yes, Miss. Finn. This way, I made a bed for you.” Hank replied, as he went from post to post to a bed not too far from the door. The tray had a hypodermic needle ready. “Now I left you a gown to get into and let me know when you’re dressed in it and I’ll be giving you the shot.”
Tamia nodded as she looked at the gown before she glanced over at the tray with the shot. It was the proper amount that she was usually given for her knock out period. She knew she would be out for at least a good 18 hours. After she was changed and climbed into the bed, she spoke, “Okay, Mr. McCoy.”
Hank came into the room and picked up the needle. “You understand that this shot will knock you out for 18 hours?”
“I usually get this shot if my migraines are too strong.” Tamia informed him, pulling out of her purse the pill bottle. “I usually take one of these tablets to get rid of them . . . sometimes they help and sometimes, they don’t which is why the shot is used.”
Hank looked at the name of the drug. “This is some powerful medication you are on, Ms. Finn.”
“Well, my powers spur my migraines thus the reason why I take them and why I’m here to learn how to use my powers, Mr. McCoy.” Tamia whispered softly, as she looked at him.
“Well, the Professor will help you as will the others,” Hank replied, as he administered the shot into Tamia’s arm and watched as she drifted off to sleep. He proceeded to pack pillows around her preventing her from moving while she slept.
“Hank, is it possible for the Professor to make her mind think she’s not using her powers and yet prevent the migraines from happening?” asked Kurt.
“It is possible but it depends on how talented the girl is with her ability.” Hank replied, as he placed the needle into the disposal unit.
“If she gets migraines, just using her ability just once . . . I doubt Professor X would let her be an active member of the younger team till he figures out how to stop her migraines from happening.” Kurt said, as they walked out of the room.
“Ye have little faith in our Professor X, Kurt, he will solve the problem in due time. She will have to allow him to do it first. He will not do anything unless she asks.” Hank replied.
Kurt looked at Tamia as she slept. “So he’ll let her decide if her migraines should go when she uses her powers.”
“Yes, he’s not one to push anything on anyone without permission . . . most of the time.” Hank said. “The only time is when we need to get information from someone.”
The two blue-furred mutants went to the kitchen where they met up with Ororo and Scott. Scott looked at them and asked. “How is our newest student doing?”
“She’s sleeping like a baby now. She won’t wake till about 4am tomorrow morning, Scott.” Hank replied, as he opened the fridge and got out the orange juice. “The pill she normally would have taken . . . well, she needed to take them within two to three minute after she used her powers.”
Kurt looked at Hank from his place on the counter. “But she threw up almost immediately.”
Hank smiled. “Well, I think she knew that this time the pill wouldn’t work like she knew it would.”
“But you said in the medical room that the pills she had is very powerful.” Kurt stated.
“Yes, but when her migraine got over a certain point and she knew it, the pills would be a moot point and would not work for that episode.” Hank replied. “I sort of surprised that she didn’t accidentally teleport in the state of pain she was in. The pain was strong enough to require a pain killer and a sedative at the same time.”
“Looks like pain is something that is not a trigger for her teleportation.” Scott said.
“Sounds like it,” Ororo replied.
“Or maybe she has it so many times that it is no longer a trigger for it,” Kurt stated.
“It could be anything really, Kurt.” Professor Xavier said, as he entered the kitchen.
“So how will we handle her training of her powers?” asked Scott. “She will have to train using them.”
Xavier looked at them silently for several minutes.
“Professor?” Scott asked after ten minutes went by.
“She will have to be trained like any other student. She cannot back out of any training class.” Xavier stated.
“Not if she is to keep herself protected that is,” Hank replied.
“So who is her ability trainer?” asked Kurt.
“Logan.” Xavier stated.
Kurt and Hank looked at him shocked. Hank asked, “Is that wise? He’ll push her too far and who knows what will happen to him or to her.”
Charles looked at them all. “She has to be pushed, Hank, she cannot practice her powers when she is not taught how to bring them up when she needs them. Calm or not, she needs to be able to summon them immediately.”
“Why give her to Logan to practice her powers with? Give her to someone who has a similar personality as she does.” Kurt replied.
“Her personality is a mix between Emma Frost and Ororo, Kurt. She told me that her emotion controls the power and she keeps it under a tight rein.” Charles informed them.
“So who’s the new student?” spoke a gruff, Canadian voice from the doorway. They turned to look at who had entered the room. “Another tight ass cub.”
“Logan!” Ororo said. She knew he had a foul mouth but she never heard him say it about a student.
“Well, by the description of the kid is just another tight ass cub, who probably doesn’t want a thing to do with their power.” Logan replied, as he walked over to the cabinet and got himself a root beer and opened it, popping in couple ice cubes into the small hole before he took a swig from it.
Kurt looked at him. “I think she wants to learn how to use her powers, Logan, but there is a side effect to it that is not good either.”
“Like what?” Logan growled off. The mere tone of his voice said it all, he was sure that the teen was not interested in using their powers to learn them properly.
“Well, Tamia Finn is currently in the medical ward in a bed asleep, sleeping off a migraine, Logan.” Hank replied, looking at him as he lifted the bottle up again to his lips. “And that was caused by one use of her powers. How would you like it if your powers instead of healing you, ended up giving you migraines when you use them?”
Logan lowered the bottle to look at him. “She gets migraines when she uses her powers?”
“Yes,” Scott said.
“So why give her to me. I’ll push her to the breaking point.” Logan replied. “I deal with those who have a feral problem regain their humanity.”
“We know this, Logan. But with the lack of feral students, we have to put you to use with the other students. Anyway, you have been complaining about the lack of feral students of late.” Charles said, seriously as he turned to look at the man.
Logan looked at him seriously. “Well, tell me what type of power she have?”
Charles informed him about her powers before the Canadian shrugged and downed the root beer before leaving the room saying something about making a list of the students he had and what powers they had. Charles looked at the others. “He took that addition to his class okay.”
“Yeah, I wonder what’s wrong with him? Usually, he’ll complain about the addition.” Hank stated.
“Maybe he thinks we’re right in putting additions into his classes.” Kurt said. The others nodded in agreement.
The next chapter will be coming soon.
