The Bayville High gym was festooned with streamers and lit with colored lights and a disco ball. Happy couples danced in the middle of the floor, unaware of the baleful gaze of a single student.
Kurt Wagner watched sullenly as Bobby and Jubilee danced together, Sam and Amara doing the same nearby. And, of course, Jean and Scott were there as well, smiling happily into each others eyes--or visor. He didn’t want to begrudge his friends their happiness, but it was hard not to be jealous. His eyes fell on Kitty, blissfully ignorant of him as she swayed gracefully in Lance’s arms. For once Kurt felt the desire to trade his power… for Cyclops’s maybe… but that might inadvertently injure Kitty. And he knew he’d never forgive himself if he harmed his beloved Katzchen. Maybe Jean’s power instead…
He made himself look away. He saw Amanda, also alone, standing against the wall on the opposite side of the room. That only made him feel worse, knowing she would be with him if she could. His tail lashed fretfully, though his image induce insured that it remained unseen.
Kurt had even lost his pity date. Rogue had agreed to go with him out of sisterly affection, and for a few minutes they had been having fun together. But then the Cajun had crashed the dance, stepped in, and whirled Rogue away. She appeared to have forgotten all about him, still gazing up happily at Gambit as they danced. Kurt wasn’t sure LeBeau was entirely trustworthy. Even though Rogue had since forgiven him for the kidnapping incident, the card-slinging, staff-wielding mutant was a bit unpredictable. But the girl was grinning from ear to ear, such a rare occurrence in itself that Kurt couldn’t bring himself to put a stop to it.
More for something to do than out of any desire for it, he went to the punch bowl and poured himself a glass. When he turned back to the dance floor, Lance and Kitty were no longer there. He looked around and spotted them heading into a hallway. He tried to follow, silently cursing the crowd that prevented him from teleporting and even from making fast progress. By the time he got to the doorway, the pair were out of sight and he didn’t know where they had gone.
Giving up, Kurt slowly made his way back out through the crowd and out the main doors into the warm spring night. He stood there for a moment, unwilling to ‘port home so early but feeling too sorry for himself to go back in and try to have fun. He looked back at the school, wondering if anyone (except maybe Amanda) would even notice his absence.
It was then that he saw something quite unexpected. A blur hurtled through the wall of the building. A blur in a long pink dress.
Kurt stared for a moment, stunned. Then he thought, I only know von pink blur that can valk through valls, realizing it was Kitty and that she was sobbing as she ran away. Full of concern, he teleported to intercept her. Bamf. “Katzchen? Vhat is wrong?” He caught her gently.
She looked up at him tearfully. “K-kurt?” He nodded, and she threw her arms around him. “Please… will you take me home?”
He held her tenderly. “Ja. Hold on.” He got them back to the mansion with a series of ‘ports.
They sat on the couch in silence while she tried to compose herself. “Vas it… did Lance do something?” he asked softly.
Kitty nodded. “He… he tried… started touching me… I was so scared I forgot to phase for a minute…” She gasped as a sound almost like a growl came from her friend. To her surprise, it didn’t scare her. It was comforting, knowing that it meant he would defend and protect her.
Kurt couldn’t know her thoughts, of course, and so he berated himself for growling. Good going, Wagner, now she’s going to think you’re just a monster. A demon. He rubbed her back gently, unsure of what to say. “Katzchen… vill you tell me exactly vhat happened?”
She shivered. “I… I don’t wanna talk about it right now.”
“Zen you don’t have to say anything until you’re ready.” Though he wanted the details before he kicked Lance’s ass, Kurt didn’t want to cause her more pain through reliving it so soon.
Kitty sighed. “Some prom night, huh?”
He chuckled weakly. “Ja. But I have an idea… do you vant to have our own dance here?” He grabbed the stereo remote and turned it on.
She smiled. “Yeah, let’s dance.”
Kurt could hardly believe his luck as he twirled his Katzchen around the living room, his image inducer now off to reveal his blue fuzzy self. He was even happier when a slow song came on. Before he could reluctantly suggest they stop, she had put her arms around his neck and continued dancing, much closer to him. He wondered what was on her mind as those beautiful blue eyes looked up into his yellow ones.
“Thanks, Kurt… you always know how to cheer me up.” Kitty smiled up at him.
He managed a smile in response. “Vell, vhat are best friends for?” Even as he said it, he felt his heart break a little at the inevitable thought that that was all he would ever be to her.
After dancing for a while, they were sitting back on the couch, snuggled up together. “Not falling asleep, are you, Katzchen?” he asked, noticing her eyes were closed.
She chuckled. “I wish I could just sleep here in your arms. You’re better than a teddy bear.”
Kurt hoped she wouldn’t feel the way his heart pounded at that. “Vell, I’m afraid ze Professor vould not approve of you using me as von,” he teased.
Kitty looked at him thoughtfully. “No, but we could at least have a little sleepover down here couldn’t we?”
He grinned. “I don’t see vhy not.”
She sat up. “I need to put on my pj’s and get pillows and blankets.”
“Vant a ride to your room?” Kurt asked. When she nodded, he added. “Hold on, zen.” Bamf.
