:::Xi'an:::
She’s finally here. Now the party can really start. I know I must look kinda silly perched on top of the booth
with a Strawberry Daiquiri in one hand, dressed in a little get-up that
one might construe as loose, but I don’t care. And as she pushes through the
doors and weaves through the usual bar crowd toward us, I can tell she doesn’t
either.
Hey guys,” she drawls in that smoky voice of hers.
God.
Beside me, Shola smiles in greeting. He’s become a great friend, even though I’ve met him only days ago.
He’s from Genosha, and by the grace of God he wasn’t there when the wild
Sentinels destroyed it. But his parents were there when it happened. I feel for
him because I lost my own parents long ago as we fled from Viet Nam to America.
In spite of his loss, he never gave in to hate. He’s attending The University
of Chicago as an out mutant. I’ve never seen that kind of courage before. It’s
inspiring. Shola’s okay now after the four of us dealt with the Sentinels once
and for all last night. It took some coaxing, but I managed to pull him away
from his studies so we could all get together, me, him, Tom…and Kitty. We all
have conflicting schedules and this was the only time we could snatch up. Kitty
shrugs out of her jacket, revealing a leather get-up to die for. I take it all
in, the black sports bra, tan pants, boots, her hair slicked back-
“Hey Pryde,” Shola says, raising his glass. “You made it! I know you gotta work, but Shan, well, all of
us thought we’d get together and celebrate.
“Yeah,” Tom chimes in. “We saved the world!” I groan inwardly. The guy’s just giddy over the whole thing,
helping and hanging with us, when days ago, he was part of a group that hated
mutants. The night of the explosion, Shola saved us from a collapsing building
and Tom immediately started screaming the same old anti-mutant rant. Kitty called
him on it, and showed him that she, too, was a mutant. At that, he really
freaked, and took off.
He’s getting over being around us, now. He’s asking questions of the usual sort, like what it’s like to have
mutant powers and all that. Thank God Shola’s willing to answer those
questions, even the stupid ones. And Lord, did he ask a dumb one two nights
ago…
Kitty and I were tangling with one of the wild Sentinels. We’d run into an abandoned building when it
rebuilt itself the first time and barricaded ourselves in the attic. Kitty was
tired, sore, with caked blood on her face. She wanted me to leave, so she could
face the robot alone. My powers were useless against machines after all, and
I’d been out of action for so long. “You have a family that needs you.” She
said. “While I…” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. She wanted to protect
me, to keep me safe. I couldn’t leave her. As terrified as I was, as much as I
wanted to rush home to Leong and Nga, and take them somewhere safe I couldn’t
leave Kitty, and told her so. We waited for the robot, wondering just how many
of the rest we had to deal with. These were the same kind that destroyed
Genosha and now, for some reason, they were after us. My bravado was crumbling
when she turned and looked at me with an intense gaze. She reached out and
brushed a strand of hair from my face and softly promised that whatever
happened, we would give the robot a hell of a fight.
As if on cue, it found us and attacked Kitty, who shoved me out of the way. I took advantage of that
distraction to ram the pole I’d been carrying through the thing.
Wrong move.
Immediately, it whipped out its tendrils, which impaled me through both shoulders. The momentum sent
me flying and my scream was cut short by me being pinned against the wall. It hurt
like hell. Then I began to feel a strong current coursing through the tendrils,
growing stronger. Oh God, it was going to electrocute me. Kitty had just
recovered when she saw me. I’ll never forget the look on her face. She roared
and dove towards me. She grabbed me phasing me free. And rendered the support
beam intangible so the roof would collapse on the Sentinel. We fell to the
floor as that piece of junk plummeted. Unfortunately, it was an old building
that was ready to fall apart and I remember yelling that just as Kitty grabbed
my waist and told me to hang on.
Instead of going splat, we were floating. There was a muffled thump. I looked down and could see a cloud of
dust spiraling upwards. The robot had just hit the ground already, buried
under tons of debris. I was leaning over for a better look when Kitty’s grip
tightened around my waist. She told me not to let go; she was going to phase us
down to the ground. That struck me as funny for some reason. Kitty had saved me
twice tonight being chivalrous all the way.
“Walk on air, hero!” I giggled. I couldn’t help it. I felt giddy.
“Don’t squirm,” she groused. “This takes a lot of concentration.” Then I really started laughing. My whole
body was shaking with excitement and we shifted around on the way down. Our
legs somehow got tangled. She groaned and muttered something about the side
effects of air walking, but I didn’t hear any of it. Finally, we made it down.
I landed on my back laughing so hard I was crying. As I hit the ground, Kitty
rolled on top of me with a grunt.
“Weirdest thing, Kitty,” I gasped. “The whole world is crashing down around us…I feel so scared and at the
same time totally jazzed.” I started laughing again, tightening my hold around
Kitty’s shoulder. She started chuckling too and told me she was glad to hear me
laugh.
And then…time stopped as our laughter faded away. I could feel her warm body on top of me, muscles
rippling underneath. Our legs were still tangled and I became very aware of a solid
thigh against me. Her darkening eyes searched mine as my heart skipped a beat.
We’d been spending a lot of time together lately and she’d been on my mind the
whole time. I hadn’t really had the nerve to do anything about it. But now…
The dust settled around us, mingling with our sweat and blood. I didn’t feel the sting at all, only the heat
from her. I lifted my hand from her shoulders and began stroking the back
of her head. Her hair is so wild and soft. She shifted ever so slightly. God,
it felt so good.
Our lips were inches apart when her eyes widened. I didn’t even have time to wonder why, because the next
thing I knew, I was choking. The thing had reached up from underneath the pile
of what was left of the old building, underneath us, and wrapped its tendrils
around my neck. Kitty screamed my name and reached for me. It got her too. She
desperately tugged at the tendrils around her throat and still tried to get to
me.
Thank God Shola showed up and saved us. Tom was with him, which surprised me. I still wasn’t crazy
about him, but I let him help me up and hold me steady. Shola had just trapped the
Sentinel within a TK bubble. Tom stared at the spectacle as if it was a video
game or something. And then, he asked the Stupid Question of The Year:
“Do you people do this sort
of thing all the time?”
I couldn’t believe he said
that. No wonder he was caught up in that Purity bullshit. He had absolutely no
clue about how much hate mutants have to deal with and the lengths people will
go to kill us. It’s easier to hate people when you don’t see their side of
things. “This ‘sort of thing’ was designed by humans to kill all
mutants, Tom.” I snapped at him. “So yes, we do it all the time.”
You’d think that would shut him up, but no…
“There are more of these things?” he asked.
Sweet Mary, Mother of God...
Kitty cut off my sharp retort with a “Later.” She was now talking Shola through destroying the Sentinel.
There were going to be more after this one. All we could do then was go home
and think out a battle plan. The rest of the night, Kitty and I didn’t talk
about what almost happened. We didn’t have time; there were more important
matters to attend to.
And Tom’s dumb questions pretty much killed the mood anyway. Why Kitty liked him before he balked at
her power stunt that night, I will never figure out. He’s not a bad guy,
really. He helped us when a great deal last night. Too bad he lost his car in
the process. He said that he’s not quite sure how to explain what happened to
the insurance company. I wonder if Damage Control is still in business…
I don’t know why I got a Strawberry Daiquiri. I’m a teetotaler at best and I can handle two beers before I get
tipsy. Kitty raises her eyebrow at it and I just giggle. She looks at me
for a moment and I can feel something pass between us. She likes what she sees.
“Guys, I’m here till midnight, so how about…”
“Shots?” Tom suggests.
“Okay, shots.”
“Sure, why not?” Shola says. “I don’t exactly drink, but…”
All right!” I squeal and smack Shola lightly on the shoulder. “I was starting to worry about you, my friend.
You’re always so…serious!”
“Whatever.” Shola grins and sips his Coke.
“Shan, where are the twins?” Kitty asks.
“Upstairs with Dylan’s aunt. She’s a sweetheart.”
“Okay. So how about it, guys? Head to the counter?”
"Sweet,” says Tom.
So we head up to the bar. Dylan’s wiping the counter and grins
when he sees us. He’s a nice guy. When I got evicted from the tenement, he
offered me an apartment for me and the twins. At first, I was leery about how he
just up and offered me a place, but I’m over it now. It’s kinda hard for me to trust people sometimes... “Hey guys,
how’s it goin’?”
“Cool, Dylan.” Kitty says as she puts on an apron and goes behind the bar. “How about
a round of shots? Ya know, to celebrate.”
“Sure, Pryde,” Dylan says. “It’s on me. What kinda shots ya’ll want?”
“We can have anything we want? Seriously?” Tom asks.
“Sure.”
“Okay, then I’ll have some ouzo.”
“WHOA, man!” Shola whistles. “Are you suicidal or something?”
“I like ouzo.” Tom says as Kitty plucks a bottle from behind and pours some ouzo.
Not to be outdone, Shola orders some Black Velvet. There’s hope for the man yet. I get
some Black Velvet too, getting another raised brow from Kitty.
“All right, Pryde.” Tom says. “It’s on you. Whatcha gonna get?”
Kitty smirks and reaches for a bottle of Jäegermeister, and pours her shot. “This
answer your question, Tom?”
“Holy shit.” He says.
Okay. So we all had our drinks and were ready to toast. Shola raises his glass. “To
us.”
“And kicking ass.” Kitty adds.
“Saving the world.” Tom pipes in.
“And friendship.” I finish looking directly into Kitty’s eyes. She meets my gaze.
And we drink our shots.
Okay, so maybe that wasn’t a good idea considering I’m still nursing a Daiquiri. The
alcohol slides down my belly filling me with warmth that settles in my crotch.
Shola chases his shot with a healthy swig of his Coke.
“HOOO-Yah!” Tom exhales. “That was cool, guys! I really hate to run, but uh, I gotta go.
Homework.” He slides off his stool with a hiccup.
“Me too.” Says Shola, as he gets ready to leave as well. “I’ve got a big final coming
up. How about when we have more time, we go out to dinner or something?”
“Sounds good. See you later guys.” Kitty says. When the guys leave, I stay at
the counter. I’ll have to go soon, too. But not right now. The booze is making
me light-headed. As I watch her serve drinks and chat with Dylan, I start thinking about her. I imagine us
together, holding each other. Kissing. Touching. I can still feel her body against mine.
Who knows what might have happened if we hadn’t been so rudely interrupted? She
comes towards me as I finish my drink. I hand her my empty glass and our
fingers brush against each other for a moment. I shudder slightly at the sensation.
God.
“Are you okay?” she asks. Her hazel eyes seem to burn through me. I want to melt.
I smile. “I’m okay, just a little tipsy. I’ll have to go soon. I just want to sit
here for a minute.”
She smiles back at me. “Never thought you to be into the heavy stuff.” She teases.
“You have no idea.”
“Really, now?” Her eyes flicker over me. “I’d like to find out.”
“Careful, Kitty. You know what curiosity did to the cat.”
“True. But satisfaction brought her back.” She takes an order for a draft from a guy
next to me. She pours the draft and hands the guy his drink with a smile. He
hands her a five-dollar tip.
“My, aren’t you the charmer.”
She grins as she pours another draft. “All part of the service.”
Time to play. I lean over. “Really? In that case, you can service me any which way you want.”
That gets her attention and she looks up, quite flustered. “Huh? Wh- wh-” She’s so
distracted that she doesn’t realize she’s overfilled the mug. The beer splashes
over her hand and onto her apron. She curses and grabs a towel to wipe herself
off. I giggle as she tries to come up with a snappy comeback and fails
miserably. Dylan, and a few of the other patrons start laughing. Her face goes
totally red. The guy who ordered the draft slams down a ten. “Keep the change,
sweetie!”
She gives me this look. One that roams my body, or so I think. She’s not mad, but I
know I’m due for some payback. Now it’s time for me to go, pick up the twins,
and start dinner. “See you later, Kitty.”
“Sure, Shan.” She smirks at me as she pours yet another drink.
Well, I guess I'm really in for it, now. Which is fine by me.
