Three days later, Caleb laid under his bed covers, staring up at the ceiling. His eyes unmoving as that one night replayed over in his mind for the millionth time.
‘What am I? What’s happening to me? I was always a little different but never like this. I just felt things that other people were feeling and even then only if I was really close to them. That word I keep hearing on the news, ‘mutant’… am I a mutant?’ Caleb wondered to himself. He didn’t answer when there was a knock at his bedroom door.
He rolled his eyes and rolled onto his stomach when he heard a louder knock.
“I’m coming in, Caleb,” Liz’s voice called through the wooden barrier as the door knob turned before Liz opened the door a crack and poked her head in before fully entering Caleb’s room.
“I brought some alfredo, it’s jalepenos and chili flakes,” Liz offered, extending a hand that had a bed tray with a bowl of steaming pasta with bits of green pepper and red brown flecks at the top.
“No thanks,” Caleb mumbled into his pillow.
“Strawberry milk?” Liz asked as she set the tray down at the study desk.
“Nah,” Caleb replied with a slight sigh.
He felt the side of his mattress depress a little under Liz’s added weight as she sat next to him.
“Did I ever tell you about Jason?” Liz asked.
“You used to call him Jay-Jay, and grew up with him,” Caleb responded, half muttering with the down filled pillow half covering his mouth.
“Yeah… we used to have so much fun… no matter where our dads were stationed. We always found some way to play and it seemed our parents were always stationed together… I found out when I was older my Dad was trying to keep an eye on his Dad,” Liz continued.
“And Grandpa founded S.H.E.I.L.D, you were a congress woman before you were 30, I know. Believe me, I know I’ve got a huge legacy to live up to,” Caleb almost growled out.
‘Family of overachievers,’ Caleb thought.
Liz gently smoothed Caleb’s messy hair, “Caleb Jason Nathaniel Payton, if you grow up and want to be a Lumberjack, or even a waiter, that’s fine. If you grow up and decide to be the first astronaut on Mars, that’s fine too. As long as you’re happy, law abiding, and do whatever you can in whatever position you hold to help those around you as often as you’re able to, I’ll be proud of you just like I am every day.”
Caleb felt his eyes water up, “I hurt those guys mom.”
“I know it, baby… but I also know you don’t have a hair trigger temper, something set you off,” Liz gently pressed.
“They were gonna take her. Mom she’d already had a sugar low, and she didn’t have enough insulin for the whole night away from home. She coulda died,” Caleb unloaded.
Liz waited for a moment before forcing Caleb to sit up and held him close to herself, “You know, baby… in many ways, you remind me of Jason.”
‘How?!’ Caleb inwardly asked then blinked when Liz answered, he could feel her smiling against his forehead.
“When he was about your age, I would’ve been about eleven, almost twelve, we were heading back towards the barracks… and a group of men came at us, wanting to take us. We were military children, and me with my father being the founder of S.H.E.I.L.D, I was a target for kidnappings, your grandfather knew that. Logan had gone to get some drinks for us, so we were alone at that point… Jason just held me close to himself and then it was the strangest thing… those men, one by one began to …. I can only say it looked like they were being broken down, mentally. I didn’t understand until the next year when I was sick. Jason had been gone most of the year, a private school, his parents told me. I didn’t know if he knew that I’d been ill… but he quickly found out during his first visit… later on, when I was thirteen, I’d learned the disease was killing me if I couldn’t receive bone marrow… I was so fed up with being caged in my room. I was going stir crazy. Jason came for a visit, right when I was thought I was going to lose my mind. Jason came into my room right when I felt like I couldn’t take it anymore and I’d just escape through the window… just play in the water or on the grass… I didn’t care. Instead the room seemed to fade into a meadow--”
Caleb had stopped crying now and listened intently.
“—I remember being amazed at what had happened… and then asking if it was real, Jay told me, ‘It’s as real as you want it to be’. It was an illusion, he was in control of it, but it felt real. He told me that’s what he’d been going to the private school for. He was a mutant, and he was learning how to control his mutant abilities there.”
“Where’s Jason now?” Caleb asked.
Liz bit her lip a bit harshly, “I’m not sure. His father is a very shallow man. He was ashamed to have a mutant son…and experimented on his own child. That’s why I got into Politics, Caleb… and why I push myself so far in my career… so that I can gain enough power to locate Jason and help him. The same way that he helped me. I’ve noticed some things, ever since you were a toddler. I’ve been able to locate the headmaster of the private school that Jason was sent to. I want you to know, I’m not expecting you to be ‘cured’-“
Liz did air quotations with her free hand at the word ‘cured’ before adding, “You can’t ‘cure’ mutation, any more than you can ‘cure’ your blonde hair, or your green eyes. It is part of you, and who you are, Caleb, is an amazing young man. I’m very blessed to be your mother, that isn’t going to change. What I want to know, is do you want to attend that school?”
Caleb bit his lip a little, “Can I think about it?”
Liz nodded a bit, “Of course, baby. Take all the time you want… but in the meantime, what can I get you to eat?”
Caleb shrugged, “What you brought’s fine… I just-” He trailed off, feeling fresh tears starting in his eyes.
Liz gently played with Caleb’s hair as she finished, “You were scared, I know. Jason was too when he first figured out what was going on. You’re still my baby boy, until the day you die… and yes, you. I say it like that because even after I’m gone, you’re still my first born baby.”
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“How special was Jason to you?” Caleb asked.
Liz gave a sad smile, “I could live to be a hundred, get hit by a brick wall, have amnesia… and I still don’t think I could forget him. Right next to you and Nate, he’s the most important man in my life.”
‘I could never forget Jason… I see him every time I look at you, Caleb,’ Liz thought to herself.
Caleb blinked a bit.
‘I’m so proud of the young man you’re becoming. I couldn’t be more proud if you were my own,’ Nate thought to himself.
Caleb shook his head slightly, “I guess I should take a shower, huh?”
“You’re kinda ripe,” Liz jokingly agreed.
Caleb chuckled a bit, “Thanks Mom.”
Liz kissed the side of Caleb’s head, “Little man, shower, then eat… and brush your teeth after or else the tooth fairy’s gonna smack ya.”
“I’m looking at the ‘tooth fairy’, and the ‘Easter bunny’, and let’s not forget ‘Santa Claus’,” Cal shot back with a smirk.
“Smart ass,” Liz teased as she left Caleb’s room.
Cal shook his head, ‘Jason’s a mutant… mom sees him every time she looks at me? And I’m not Nate’s biological son…’
He shook his head a bit, ‘Damn it, Cal, you think too much. Still… a school for mutants… what Jason did for Mom kind of sounds like what I did… except I…I hurt people with it.’
He felt his eyes tear up, ‘well, no way Shaquilla’s gonna want a freak like me... time to move on, I guess. If I could learn to control this it would be best... going away for a while though... I'd miss my family. But I'd rather miss them than hurt them... what I did that night... I'm barely able to try functioning as it is and they were threatening Kiara. I couldn't live with myself if I actually hurt her... or our parents.’
