“Jean’s not pyrokinetic is she?”
Kitty frowned,
leaning close to the mirror and examining a red spot on her chin. “No… St John
is though. Why?”
Rogue rubbed
the pink marks on her arm, her glove bunched down around her wrist. “She burned me!”
“That’s
impossible! Even if she was pyrokinetic, there was no
fire around for her to manipulate.” Kitty
turned away from the mirror and motioned for Rogue to hold out her arm. “That’s weird,” she said after a moment, her
fingers resting lightly on Rogue’s open palm as she bent to study the marred
flesh. “It *does* look a bit like a
burn…” She started to touch it but both
her friend’s subtle hiss and tensing as well as her own common sense stopped
her. “Do you want some ointment on it?”
she asked instead, blushing slightly at the thought of the near mishap.
Rogue shook
her head. “I’ll just go get some aloe
from Storm. She’s got that huge plant
and Lord only knows how many small pots of it around the place…” She brushed her fingers over the elongated
marks. “It’s her fingers,” she
murmured. “She burned me where she
grabbed me…”
Kitty pushed
herself up onto the counter in the upstairs group bathroom, letting her heels
drum softly on the wooden cabinet door beneath the sink. “Rogue, you *know* she can’t do that…”
“Maybe it’s a
new mutation,” the Southerner pointed out without looking away from her
arm. “You know it happens, we keep
mutating, changing…”
Rogue’s voice
had become distant, almost sad. Kitty
sighed softly and toed Rogue’s knee with her sneaker. “You know it’s not always like that. We’re
not as random as all that.”
“Might as well
be,” she replied, pulling her glove back up to cover her bare arm to the
elbow. “We don’t know everything about
mutations, no matter what the Professor says.
Even he doesn’t know why that gene is triggered, does he? Even Beast and Cecilia don’t know…” She shook her head and glanced in the mirror,
pushing a white lock of hair back behind her ears. “Jean burned me when she grabbed me
earlier. I will swear to that in court
if it ever came to that and tell you what,” she paused and fixed Kitty with an
intent gaze, “I’m not sorry she did it.”
“What?” Kitty
slid from the counter and followed Rogue from the bathroom. “You were just acting like it was the end of
days…”
“No… if she’s
mutating on us, that explains the mood swings, doesn’t
it?” Rogue stopped at the top of the
steps and gave Kitty a look of smug realization. “She grabbed my arm and pushed me away
because she’s mad, right?”
“Well, duh.”
“Hey, what’re
you two talking about?” Bobby closed the
door to his room behind him, smiling at his two friends. When they did not respond after a long moment
of silence, his brows rose. “Oooooookay… Supersecret
Girly Stuff. I got it.”
Kitty bit her
lower lip as if she were trying to decide whether or not to say anything, but
Rogue’s sudden, hard grip on her upper arm made her mind up for her. “Yep, that’s it, Bobby. Supersecret Girly Stuff. No
boys allowed.” She smiled and nodded,
phasing out of Rogue’s grip without looking at her. “Where you headed?”
“St
John wants to go out on the lake… I think he’s been
bitten by the romance bug,” Bobby sighed, rolling his eyes. “I made the mistake of saying we never do
anything romantic and now he’s all hot to trot, trying to prove we do… Where’re
you two going?”
“Shopping,”
Kitty extemporized.
“Danger Room,”
Rogue said at the same time.
Bobby let out
a low whistle, both girls glaring at each other covertly before him. “Shopping in the Danger Room… I suppose using
holographic money to buy holographic stuff is a good way to get your shopping
yen out without blowing your wad…” He
slid between them and headed down the stairs.
“Have fun at the simulated Saks, girls…”
“I’m gonna
kick his ankles later,” Rogue muttered. “Shopping?”
“I panicked,”
Kitty shrugged. “Why are we lying to
Bobby anyway?”
“Because we
might have a secret,” Rogue pointed out, turning to go down the stairs. “And Bobby can’t keep a secret. He’ll tell St
John, who’ll tell Scott, since it involves Jean… And
then it’ll all come back to us and we’ll get bitched out for not going to the
Professor or Scott first.”
“Why don’t we
go to them?”
Rogue stopped
at the bottom of the stairs and sighed. “This is too Freaky Friday for me… I think we switched brains some time during
the night, Kit. We’re not going to them
because we’re not sure yet. No use
blowing things out of proportion, you know.”
Kitty opened
her mouth to respond but was cut off by a shrill, ear-splitting claxon of
alarm. “What the Hell…”
“Danger Room!” Rogue shouted above the din, starting towards
that hallway.
“No! That’s
just one long ring and the red emergency lights,” Kitty shouted, grabbing the
back of Rogue’s shirt. “This is...” she
paused, racking her brain. “Damn it, I
think it’s medical emergency lock down…”
“Lock down?”
Rogue returned, leaning close but still shouting. Those that had remained at the Institute that
day were appearing out of rooms, from behind closed doors, all bearing similar
expressions of confusion, mild fear and curiosity. Soon, everyone would be crowded into the
foyer and they would no doubt be put into the rec
room until things were sorted out to the teachers’ satisfaction. “Like for a virus or something?”
“Or
something,” Kitty agreed. She spotted
the alarm box nearest them and frowned, moving towards it.
“Don’t even
think of it, Half Pint,” Logan’s
voice thundered over the din. His hands
were clasped firmly over his ears, his face clearly bearing signs of
discomfort. “Everyone,
Rec Room!”
“I knew it,”
Rogue muttered. “Treat us like
mushrooms…”
“Watch your
mouth,” Logan ordered, standing
aside and ushering the gathering students towards the large room. “Not so fast you two. You’re coming with me.”
