A/N Foxy is a Goddess…*twirly dance * Eeep! Sorry, y’all! I didn’t think y’all were gonna yell at me, lol. I’ll fix it, it’ll be fine. *G *
Have you ever hyperventilated? It’s not as nice and neat as it looks in the movies, with the breathing into a paper bag and concerned looks from friends. I felt like I was choking, like my lungs were on fire. And that was just while I was trying to talk to Bobby!
“Shhhhh….calm down! They’re gonna think I’m strangling you in here or something!” He pushed my head down between my knees and I was too shaken to fight him. “Take a deep breath and let it out slow.”
I did as I was told, the air feeling like hot lead pouring down my throat. I sniffled, snot running down after the burning air. “This,” I said trying to look less like an ass, “would look really bad if anyone came in right now.” My head was between my legs, Bobby’s hand on the back of my neck, his shirt somewhere across the room as I had interrupted him as he was getting ready for bed.
“I’d think it’d look more impressive than perverted, if that’s what they think you’re doing,” he said dryly, rubbing my neck and back. “We all know you’re a cunning linguist but this is just ridiculous!”
I sat up, knocking his hand off me. “Ha ha.”
“Look, Rahne,” he began, suddenly very ous, ous, “I can only guess why she broke things off with you. Maybe the pressure was too much. Maybe she did it to protect you. Did she say anything, after that?”
I could feel the choking start again and swallowed against it, trying not to begin sobbing. “Just…just to leave her be when I tried to ask her why.” Her exact words had been, ‘Rahne,’t. ’t. Please just…don’t.” It hurt to remember. It felt like broken glass under my skin. “I just don’t understand! SHE asked ME. She’s the one who wanted this so bad…” Even as I said it, the words sounded cruel.
“And you didn’t?” Bobby had caught that, too. He sat on his bed, knees under his chin, looking at me in that way people usually reserve for very simple children.
“I did but…I don’t know!” I was on my feet and pacing, my fingers knotting in my hair as I tried to put to words what was in my head and heart. “I want to be with her…I even…I love her.” I cringed, expecting some comment about how we were too young to be in love, but none came. “I was scared, yeah, but it was like…like…” I had to sit down. I dropped to the floor and curled over my own knees in a mirror of Bobby’s posture. “Have you ever had something for a long time and never thought much about it other than you liked it, then one day, you moved it just a little to the left and all of a sudden it’s the greatest thing ever?”
“Long way to go for a metaphor,” he drawled lazily. “Okay, let me see if I got this right…you didn’t know you were a lesbian until she asked you out?”
“It’s not like that!” I had no way to explain it other than I love her. I had never considered being with a woman before Jubilee and I was not sure I was entirely off the male species, but Jubilee was the only one I thought of and wanted to be with. “It’s like…like…”
“Whoa. I don’t think I can handle another comparison this time of night.” He got to his feet and came over to kneel in front of me. “It sucks what Kelly did and it sucks even harder that some jack off out there is harassing you like this.” He put his hands on my shoulders and made me look up at him. He looked sad, which made me feel worse. I sniffled again and he frowned. “You want to be with her, right?”
“Duh.”
“And she won’t talk to you so you can’t know for sure her reasons why…” He rocked back on his heels and sucked on his lower lip as he looked at me. “I’m willing to bet it’s to protect you. The notes have been coming to her and all so if she breaks up with you, she’s the only one being attacked.”
“That’s stupid! Why would she think I wouldn’t want to stand by her?”
“I didn’t say that, did I? She doesn’t want you to get hurt. If she breaks up with you, that’s a little hurt. It’s over, it’s done. You get gay bashed, your name is all over town…that’s a bigger hurt.”
“That,” I said after a moment, “is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.”
“I tried,” he shrugged. “Look, I have an idea here…it’s not the best idea in the world but it’s an idea…”
I waited for him to say something but all he did was stare at the carpet for almost a full minute. “Bobby? Hello?”
“What’re you doing Friday night?”
Prom night. Cruel. “What do you think?”
“Something entirely different than what you’re thinking…”
A/N Next chapter, things are resolved, kind of. Then smut!
