Zac stood in the shower, a hand braced against the shower wall while the luke warm droplets of water cascaded onto his body.
‘I’m really not father material at all. What can I offer a kid? But… Kiara wants this baby,’ Zac’s mind raced with thoughts of the day’s events.
After a moment his face twisted with pain and let out a small sob as his eyes overflowed with tears.
‘I don’t know what to do. I left that life… but given enough time it won’t leave me alone. I had no choice back then. I had to survive… and they’re the ones that could pay a price for it,’ he thought as the inner turmoil spilled out onto his face.
His hands covered his face, realizing his legs felt like jelly as he sank onto the floor of the shower stall. Seconds blended into minutes, he stayed in place as the water ran cold. His skin prickled with goose bumps at the chill, still he stayed now hugging his knees up to his chest. After a bit longer he drew in a shaky breath, and reached up, turning the water off.
The shower was the one refuge he had when his past over whelmed him. It was the only thing that could both drown out the sound of his sobs and wash away the evidence of his tears simultaneously. He leaned against the wall of the shower stall and looked up to the ceiling, “I’ve never been the praying kind. I know I’m not a favourite. There’s many that say I’m not in your Grace… that you hate me. I don’t normally ask you for anything, but I don’t know where else to turn. If you’re there, and those people are wrong… give me a sign. What should I do?”
Zac sat staring blankly at the shower door, the fogged up stained glass beginning to clear a little.
‘Jordan… I wish you were here. I wish you’d never left,’ Zac thought to himself as he stood up and shakily left the shower, grabbing the towel from the rack and wrapping it around his waist. He sighed a bit as he headed into his bedroom, silently cursing when he remembered it was winter.
‘I’d kill for a fucking cigarette right now… or something stronger,’ Zac inwardly growled.
He blinked when someone knocked at his door. He shook his head a bit and quickly pulled on some boxers and then a pair of black sweat pants while he called to the other person, “Just a minute.”
He wrapped the towel around his neck, rubbing his sopping wet hair as he opened the door.
“Hey kid,” the voice greeted.
Zac blinked a bit, “Hey Logan.”
“Got a minute?”
Zac nodded, moving away from the door and sat on his bed, “S’up?”
“Kinda what I wanted to ask you. I’ve noticed how you look at her,” Logan revealed as he pulled up the computer chair and straddled it, the back of the chair pressing against his chest.
Zac shrugged in response, “It’s not me that’s goin’ through it.”
“Bullshit,” Logan replied.
Zac looked to Logan with an inquisitive expression, “I’m not the one that’s pregnant.”
Logan nodded, “No, that’s true. That doesn’t mean you ain’t got your own stuff you’re tryin’ to sort through. Look… you ever wonder how Kiara’s parents got together?”
Zac raised both eyebrows at the question, “I… kinda guessed like most people?”
“Ain’t quite that simple,” Logan replied, looking to the door. Zac stood up and closed the door to his room before retaking his seat. Logan was lighting up a cigar, and a second was laying on the bed.
“It ain’t a cigarette, but it’s all I got. Figured with all that’s goin’ on a minior slip ain’t gonna be too much to whine about,” Logan offered.
Zac gave a slight chuckle as a small smile crossed his face, picking up the tobacco rolled offering and placed it between his lips. Logan tossed his lighter to Zac.
Zac flicked the lighter, taking a drag as the cigar lit up. He flicked the lighter closed and tossed it back to Logan as he took the cigar from his mouth and exhaled.
“Ain’t your first cigar either, huh?”
Zac gave a slight laugh, “Logan… you’re not the only bad boy in the mansion.”
Logan responded with a slight nod as he began telling Liz and Nate’s story, starting with Stryker’s experiments on Liz. After he finished he looked to Zac who was looking out the window.
“It’s really amazing that Nate was willing to do that,” Zac admitted.
“He just likes kids… he was actually planning to be a high school career advisor… but things took the turn they did and he wound up working for his old man,” Logan added.
“I like kids too… especially toddlers. They’re adorable,” Zac confessed, then looked downward at the floor.
“But?”
“But my past is dangerous,” Zac admitted.
“I stole from people… agencies. Big wigs. I don’t mean like I walked into their agency and waved a gun in their face, I’m not violent… and I did the best I could to cover my tracks,” Zac continued.
“But only the best hackers never get caught. I just don’t know if I’m one of them… because I don’t know, I’m scared. What if what I did back then ends up hurting Kiara and the baby?”
“What if the sky turns to flame and your ears fall off? Things happen, kid. All you can do is roll with the punches as they come and keep rollin’ on,” Logan offered.
Zac blinked a bit and nodded, “I guess so.”
Logan stood up from his seat, pushing the chair back to the computer, “So you stole through computer hacking huh? Sure we can have this in your room?”
“Oh knock it off, only time I use that thing for now is videos,” Zac scoffed.
Logan gave a slight smirk.
“Get fuckin’ bent Wolverine,” Zac shot back at the look on the older man’s face.
Logan chuckled, “Now where’d your mind go?”
He ruffled Zac’s now dried hair as he left the room, “Just think it over… but while ya do kid, she needs friends more than anythin’ right now.”
Zac nodded a bit, “Yeah.”
“All the same… you’re doin’ it right. I know she ain’t the only one hurtin’ over this and it’s important that everyone that supports her also takes time to take care of themselves too. Knowin’ Kiara though, if she saw ya break down, she’d just feel bad about it,” the gruff man concluded before leaving the teen’s room.
Zac let out a small sigh before picking up his cell phone and writing a text, ‘hey… wanna grab some fries?’
After a while a message came back to him, ‘sure.’
He smiled a bit at the message and quickly found a blue t-shirt, pulling that on he then pulled on a grey zip up sweater and put on a pair of socks before leaving his room.
An hour later Zac sat at table in a small family owned restaurant, a plate of fries and gravy at the center of the table. He and Kiara were picking at the fries with their forks, slowly consuming them.“What do you see yourself doing in ten years?”
Zac glanced up at Kiara, and smiled a bit, “Kinda expected that one… I don’t really know. It might sound a bit weird but I’ve wanted to become a tattoo artist ever since I knew what a tattoo artist was.”
Kiara quirked a brow, “Why?”
Zac shrugged, “Tattoos are cool. It’s like an art collection on your body. Your entire body’s a canvass. But more than that… while quite a number of people get tattoos on a dare or because they think it’s rebellious… there are those that get tattoos with real meaning. As symbols of pride in one’s heritage, a badge for overcoming adversity, struggles in their life, or in memory of a lost dear friend or loved one. It’s for those reasons that I like tattoos. A simple heart tattoo can symbolize so many things, so could a tiger, or a scorpion. A koi would normally symbolize luck. That’s why I like tattoos. They can cool, sure, but there can also be deeper meaning to each bit of body art that someone’s added to their skin.”
Kiara smiled a bit nodded, “That is kinda special.”
“What about you?”
“I’ll be raising this kid,” Kiara answered.
“Well, yeah, I mean aside from that,” Zac pushed.
“I don’t know… maybe working in a grocery store or a call center,” Kiara replied with a shrug.
“Why there? I thought you wanted to be a teacher,” Zac probed.
“I did… I do, but this baby takes priority over that,” Kiara revealed.
“You can still be a teacher, Kiara. Your parents have already said they back you… and if you’ll accept it, you’ve got me backing you too. Yeah, I do wanna be a tattoo artist and once you get established you can make decent money doing it… and I’ll have a two year head start on you. So don’t give up on your dream, cause if you do, odds are you’ll end up resenting this kid sooner or later. We can’t have that,” Zac responded.
Kiara blinked a little bit before slowly nodding, “Yeah, I guess…. We’ll see how things go.”
Zac gave a small grin and nodded as he took a mouthful of fries, ‘well better than giving up on it completely.’
Kiara hesitated before asking, “I thought you didn’t want kids.”
“I never said that. I said I didn’t think I should be raising them, whether I want them or not. I still don’t know if I should be… I’m not a good person. All I can promise you is one thing; no one will ever hurt this kid without getting what’s coming to them,” Zac responded.
