~~~~SEVEN YEARS LATER~~~~
“Very good, Caleb,” The dance instructor praised as Caleb headed towards the change room.“Thanks, kinda helps having someone to practice with at home,” thirteen-year-old Caleb replied with a slightly sheepish grin.
‘God, I can’t believe I let Kiara talk me into taking ballet lessons with her. Kill me now,’ the teenage boy thought to himself, slightly shaking his head.
‘Still, I gotta admit it’s better this way… if she has an episode during class I can help out. Sure isn’t much of a girl magnet though. Ah well, I got time to worry about that. Kiara’s health is more important… and she’s getting better at controlling her sugar. She only gets sick from it once in a blue moon now,’ His train of thought continued as he went to the locker and got his street clothes out, quickly changing into a forest green hoodie and baggy blue jeans with green and white sneakers. He quickly put the silver hoop earring into his right earlobe, and fastened it. He then stuffed his ballet leotard into his backpack. Cal slung the overpacked bag over his shoulder and heading towards the hall way to wait for Kiara.
Since Kiara had been diagnosed as a type one diabetic seven years ago, Caleb’s life had changed a fair bit. When she first came home after her first hospital stay she’d refused to let their parents test her blood sugar because, ‘only meanie doctors poke fingers.’
So he’d come up with a way to make a game out of having her blood sugar tested. He’d get his done at the same time, and if hers matched his, he’d show her something cool. As they got older it changed to if she matched his blood sugar level, he’d give her half of his weeks allowance on top of her own, and it continued on like that until she decided she no longer wanted to play and just did her sugar levels knowing that she needed to.
He always had an ear out to hear if she was having issues with someone over it and was quick to jump to her defense if she needed help. The only time he’d gotten into a fight (if you can even call it that) wasn’t even linked to her diabetes. A kid in his class had been trying to get his cell phone under Kiara’s skirt to take a picture of her underwear. Caleb had noticed, and gotten in between them, the kid had then proceeded to beat Caleb up, though Cal had been knocked down to his knees a few times, he refused to hit Zander Powell back, and only blocked on coming attacks.
He later had admitted to his parents that he didn’t want to scare Kiara or make her think he’d ever raise his hands to her in anger. Sure she ticked him off sometimes, she was his little sister! Why wouldn’t she bug him sometimes? But the worst he’d do to her is tease her and call her a few names.
“Waiting for your sister?” A voice asked.
Caleb recognized the voice all too well and instantly felt his stomach twist while his mouth went dry. His tongue seemed to tie its self around his teeth, “Uhh, ye-yeah… uhh, gue-guess you’re heading straight home, huh?”
The 13- year-old girl with long jet black hair, and cocoa coloured skin nodded, a raven lock of hair fall into her face, as she gave Caleb a small smile, “Well… I’ll see you Thursday.”
Caleb swallowed a bit, and nodded, “Yeah. Okay. I’ll see ya then, Shaquilla.”
‘God damn I wanna reach out and push the hair behind her ear so badly… her face is just… wow. She’s beautiful,’ Cal thought to himself as he repositioned against the hallway wall.
After a few more minutes, Kiara emerged from the girl’s change room, looking a bit pale.
“Doin’ alright?” Caleb asked.
Kiara shook her head ‘no’, “I didn’t remember to take gym class into account when I had lunch.”
“Let’s grab something fast on the way home then,” Caleb suggested as he headed out.
“You okay to walk?” He asked.
Kiara nodded, “I should be, I think.”
Caleb smiled a bit, ‘Hard to tell we’re only half-siblings… these headaches keep getting worse… and when I don’t have the headaches…’
Caleb sat at the kitchen table, books sprawled out in front of him as he scribbled away at a work sheet.“How’s it going today, bud?” Nate asked, placing a hand on Caleb’s shoulder.
“My head doesn’t hurt as much today,” Cal answered.
Nate smiled and nodded, “That’s good.”
He blinked a bit as he looked at the work sheet Caleb was filling out, “You’re breezing through that pretty easily.”
“It is easy,” Caleb answered.
“That’s my boy,” Nate praised, ruffling Cal’s hair a little.
‘I’m so proud of the young man you’re becoming. I couldn’t be more proud if you were my own,’ Nate thought to himself.
Caleb blinked a bit before glancing at Nate from the corner of his eye, ‘did he say that or…’
“C.J?” Kiara’s voice called, breaking through his train of thought.
Caleb shook his head a little and looked to Kiara, seeing she’d become more pale, and was visibly shaking.
‘Oh not good,’ Caleb thought as he slid his backpack down to his arms and knelt in front of Kiara.
“Hop on, hold on tight. If you’re gonna pass out, give a heads up,” Caleb ordered.
Kiara didn’t argue but climbed onto her brother’s back. Caleb stood up and began running with Kiara towards a nearby Pizzaria he knew of.
‘I just hope they’re open!’ Cal thought frantically as his feet pounded against the pavement.
“I think they are,” Kiara said.
Caleb blinked a bit, but didn’t give a second thought to what had just happened as he saw the sign for the pizzeria coming into view, “Looks like.”
He kept running until they were inside, and sat Kiara down in a booth before going up to the counter, taking his wallet out of the back of his jeans. He quickly grabbed a bag of harvest cheddar sun chips and a diet coke before taking the items over to Kiara. She quickly began drinking down the soft drink while Caleb opened the bag of chips for her.
After the drink and chips were gone they did a quick glucose test, finding Kiara was just at normal.
“Alright, let’s get home,” Caleb suggested as he stood up again, slinging his backpack on.
Kiara stood up, avoiding eye contact, “I’m sorry.”
“K-bear… stop it. I’d rather you say somethin’ than pass out on me,” Caleb replied.
Kiara nodded and blinked when an elbow gently connected with her rib.
Caleb smiled at her, “Come on, cheer up…. Or am I gonna have to torture you?”
Kiara giggled a small smile breaking out over her lips.
“Well that’s a little better,” Cal remarked, rolling his eyes a bit.
“So what’s goin’ down with you and Shaquilla?” Kiara asked.
“Wha-?!” Cal almost exclaimed.
“CJ’s got a crush,” Kiara teased in a sing-song voice.
“Shut up, De-boar-ah,” Cal shot back, morphing her middle name.
Kiara’s face went visibly red with anger, “if I’m a boar, you best hope I don’t sit on you.”
“Don’t worry, De-boar-ah, I can apparently carry a boar,” Cal retorted with a satisfied smirk.
Kiara was about to reply but let out a scream instead when an arm wrapped around her waist, and some older teenage boys circled around, one held a blade to Kiara’s throat.
“Caleb!” Kiara cried out as the other four teenaged men restrained Caleb.
“Shut up. You’re the poltician’s kids, right? Well here’s how it goes…” The one holding Kiara began.
“We’re gonna beat up that punk boy ballerina… and then, my pretty… you’re coming with us. We’re not really looking to hurt ya… it’s just we deserve more than what we got… so you’re a pretty good means of getting it. We’ll take you, and when your mommy pays up, you can go. Don’t worry… you’ll like playing house with us,” the same guy sneered, his tongue coming out to lick Kiara’s cheek.
Kiara let out a frightened sob.
‘Take? Her diabetes! She could be in a coma… or worse before mom can get any money to them! NO!’ Caleb thought before his head began to throb. His vision went black from the pain, while a rage built up in the pit of his stomach.
“I WON’T LET YOU!!” Caleb yelled in the dark night, the guys that had been holdling onto Caleb seemed to suddenly let go, horror stricken expressions on their faces.
“What is this Curtis?” One guy wearing a hoodie asked as he looked around the bleakly lit room.
“H-how would I know?” the guy that’d been holding Kiara replied. He looked to the guy that had spoken, “Quit usin’ my real name, loser!”
“Hey… what… what is that light?” A third guy asked, pointing at it.
Chains spawned from thin air and latched onto each of the teenaged men around their waist, wrists, ankles, and necks. The chains then locked tightly, holding all five bodies in place.
“I’m a nice person…. A very nice person…I’ll take a lot from anyone. You can say or do whatever you want to me, but there’s one thing you never do and get away with,” Caleb’s voice echoed to all five of them as a loud rumbling began.
“You don’t fucking threaten my sister!” Caleb’s voice growled out as a train collided all with all five boys.
The five teenaged men fell to the ground like rag dolls. Kiara watched for a split second, letting out a startled scream as she covered her eyes.
Caleb panted heavily, and looked around, ‘what?! What just happened here? Kiara… Kiara!’
He spun and ran to Kiara, pulling her into a hug, “It’s okay.”
“Cal…. Caleb what just happened?” Kiara asked.
“I- I don’t know,” Caleb admitted.
He clutched Kiara close, “I gotta call mom and dad… these guys need help.”
Kiara nodded in agreement as she returned Caleb’s embrace, “I know but… but how do we… explain this?”
“They passed out. That’s what we’ll say. They just passed out. They coulda been on drugs for all we know,” Caleb answered.
Kiara nodded slowly, “I was so scared.”
“I know, but I’m here. I’ll never let anybody hurt you. I promise,” Caleb replied.
‘Anybody else… but what about me? What’s happening to me?’ Caleb inwardly questioned as he looked up to the night sky.
‘God… why me?’
