Kitty’s driving is improving at little, Scott thought. Riding with her has downgraded from absolute terror to concerned alarm. He tried to hang on as she changed lanes suddenly, with only a cursory check for existing occupants of the target lane. “Damn it, Kitty, you’ve got to check the blind spot!”
“This is like a thrill ride,” Amara said from the back seat. “People pay money for this.”
“It’s not me,” Kitty protested. “It’s all these crazy fuckers on the road.”
As they passed an intersection, Scott noticed that the cross street was blocked on both sides by what appeared to be military vehicles. “What the hell? Is there a parade today? And why would the National Guard be doing crowd control anyway?”
“That isn’t regular military!” Tiffany yelled. “It’s fucking SHIELD!” She tried to scrunch down in the seat, but that was difficult in the almost nonexistent back seat of the sports car, even for a small person. She laid down sideways, her head in Amara’s lap, hoping the hair color and sunglasses had been enough to prevent recognition.
The next cross-street was blocked in a similar fashion, and the one after that. “This is a big operation,” Scott observed. “What the fuck is going on?”
Finally that became clear. Up ahead the road in front of them was also blocked. Scott looked back so see more SHIELD vehicles behind them. “Son of a bitch! They’re after us!”
“No,” Tiffany corrected. “They’re after me. I knew this was going to happen sooner or later. They tracked me down.” She sat up again.
Kitty prepared to just phase the car through the roadblock, but then she noticed an alley just ahead of it and made a wild turn into it. It was fairly narrow and she came close to scraping the sides until she got the car under control.
“This is a trap, Kitty,” Tiffany said. “They wanted you to do that.” She may have been ignorant of a lot of things, but combat tactics was not one of them.
“She’s right,” Scott agreed. “We were herded into the alley.”
Tiffany sighed. “Slow down so that I can jump out. I’m the one they want. You guys get out of here.” She gritted her teeth. “But they won’t take me without a fight. I’ve spent enough time as a captive.”
“Kitty, stop the car,” Scott said.
“Scott, have you lost your mind?” Amara exclaimed. “We can’t just turn Tiffany over to those bastards.”
“I didn’t say we would. Kitty and I need to trade places. I’ll drive so that she can concentrate on phasing us through whatever is at the end of the alley.” He looked at Tiffany. “And you stay put. You aren’t jumping out of anything.”
Scott put the car in motion again, driving as fast as possible in the alley, while still avoiding debris that might puncture a tire.
In the meantime, Kitty used the car’s comm system to call the Institute on the emergency channel. Ironically, the X-Men comm system used the Avenger satellites, which SHIELD was also using to chase them. She couldn’t get the Professor, but Wolverine responded and she quickly reported their situation. He would have been concerned anyway, but learning that X-23 was in jeopardy really put a fire under him.
“Hang tight, Half Pint. We’ll be there as soon as we possibly can. Leave this channel open so we can home on it.”
Kitty got a good grip on the car and mentally prepared herself for what might be a difficult phase. She had phased larger vehicles than Scott’s car, but size wasn’t the only factor. The other main one was duration. Just going through a wall would be no big deal. The important thing was what was on the other side. If they found themselves in an office building or something, she might have to hold the phase for quite some time before they got clear, which would drain her power. It would be pointless to phase through an outer wall just to crash into an inner one. It could be a whole block of office buildings. She shook that thought out of her head. Whatever it was, she would get them through it.
The alley turned slightly and they could see the opening up ahead. Surprisingly, there didn’t appear to be a wall. Or a barricade. Or anything. In fact, it looked like open space.
Scott started slowing down. “I don’t like this. There isn’t that much open space in Bayville. Not downtown anyway. It has to be the river, so phasing won’t help.” He started to stop the car, but a glance in the rear view mirror showed vehicles behind them. “Do you think you can phase us through the side of the alley?”
“Of course,” Kitty said. “But we’d have to hope that there isn’t much between us and clear space. We’re right in the middle of the block.”
“Fuck it,” Scott said. “Let’s go on where they want us to. Everybody get ready to fight.” He reached into the glove compartment for his visor.
“Really, guys,” Tiffany said. “You don’t have to do this.”
“Yes, we do,” Kitty said. “End of discussion.”
When the car exited the alley, the river was only a few yards away. There were at least thirty vehicles on either side of them, and probably a thousand heavily-armed men in each group. Scott pointed. “Christ, they even brought a fucking heli-carrier.”
“I knew they wanted me,” Tiffany said, “but I didn’t know I was this popular.”
Nobody seemed to be attacking them yet. They got out of the car and looked around. Soon a familiar figure appeared.
“Hello, Cyclops,” Nick Fury said. “Haven’t seen you since the Apocalypse thing. Listen, we aren’t looking for a fight. We just want the girl.”
“You can’t have her.”
“Why are you defending her? She’s a menace to society.”
“She used to be,” Scott agreed. “Not any more.”
“Look, this isn’t a request. We’re taking her into custody.”
Scott’s only answer was to bring his hand up to his visor control. Fury was familar enough with his power to know what that meant. Amara went into a full burn. Tiffany extended her claws. Kitty’s power was defensive, nothing to display, so she just dropped into a combat position.
Fury looked grim. “You guys are tough, but you really think you can take on all this firepower by yourselves?”
“We won’t have to,” Kitty said, pointing upward.
Fury whirled around to see both the Blackbird and the X-copter approaching. Storm and Jean didn’t bother to wait for landing, launching themselves into the air from altitude. The sky was already darkening as Storm was ramping up the weather conditions. Kitty heard a bamf and Kurt was standing alongside her. As was usual after a port so close to her, she held her breath until the noxious fumes dissipated.
The copter hovered above the group and Wolverine jumped out from about 50 feet, breaking his fall on a dumpster. Then he stood beside X-23, his own claws extended.
He and Fury just looked at each other, while the aircraft landed and the other X-Men disembarked. Kitty noted that pretty much everybody was here, including the trainees. The entire Institute had been offloaded into the two aircraft.
“You lied to me, Logan,” Fury said. “You said the girl was killed in the crash of the Hydra command ship.”
“It wasn’t a lie. At the time, I thought she was. I didn’t catch her scent until after that, and didn’t bother to correct the mistake. So sue me, Bub. Leave her alone.”
“You know I can’t do that. Look, you saw the psychological profile on her. You were there when I interrogated that Hydra woman who was running the program.”
“And that profile is now out of date,” Professor Xavier said as he rolled up. “Colonel Fury, she has changed a great deal from when that profile was created. I have witnessed attitude improvement on almost a daily basis. Not only is she no longer a menace to society, but when her training is farther along and she joins our main team, she will be a significant benefit to society.”
“It’s an act,” Fury said stubbornly. “She’s just as dangerous as ever.”
“Dangerous to Magneto and other evildoers, yes. Do you really think that play-acting would deceive telepaths?”
Fury blinked. Apparently he hadn’t thought of that.
The Professor went on. “The sensible thing would have been to recruit her as an agent of SHIELD of her own free will rather than hunting her down. I assure you that no one on Earth hates Hydra as much as she does, and she would have been relentless in fighting them. But it is too late for that. She is one of us now.”
“I have my orders.”
“And you always seem to have a great deal of leeway with them. Come with me back to the Institute and I will show you a current psychological profile, so that you can inform your superiors that hounding X-23 is pointless. Send your men back to base. There is no need for a confrontation.”
Fury considered it for a moment. “All right. But she doesn’t leave my sight until this is resolved. She’s gotten away from me too many times already.”
“Done. Tiffany, please accompany us back in the Blackbird. Everyone else, stand down and reboard the aircraft. There will be no battle this time.”
Fury ordered his men back to base, then followed the Professor to the X-Jet. “Who the hell is Tiffany?”
