Marie went still as the proverbial deer in headlights. She couldn’t hear a thing over the pouring rain. Logan could.
“Stay here,” he ordered. She took a few steps after him into the bedroom and stopped.
A faint voice came from the living room at the other end of the apartment. “Marie?”
She watched Logan sidle thru the doorway even as the voice registered and a light clicked on in the other room. Relief washed over her. It was only Jubilee.
The next instant clanged together sharply. “What the fuck are you doing here?” It was said at the exact same moment – by two different voices. Men’s voices. Logan’s and Scott’s.
Her eyes flew wide. Oh shit!
Scott stared, his jaw threatening to come unhinged.
Logan was barely dressed. He was wearing only his jeans. His hair was wet. Looking past him into the bedroom, Scott could see the bed. It was a chaotic tangle of sheets and out of kilter pillows. He blew his stack.
<
“You! You – you – “
Logan calmly crossed his arms and regarded Scott with an icy glint in his eye.
“Yeah. It’s me, Summers. Somethin’ you wanted?” His unruffled tone gave lie to the look on his face.
Scott was so freaking pissed off he couldn’t speak. He sputtered and turned on Jubilee. She looked guilty as hell.
“You!” Scott’s vocabulary had retreated into monosyllables.
Jubilee ducked and started talking, a blizzard of words. “I couldn’t tell you I’d lied earlier, Scott, I just couldn’t, and I thought he’d be gone by now anyway. And, um, well, I guess I didn’t ‘really’ think that, I thought he ‘might’ still be here, I mean things looked pretty cozy when I left.”
At Scott’s outraged look, she kept talking. “But if he really was gone, Marie would know where he went and you wanted to know where he was, so…. Well, now you know. Here he is.” She gestured with tossed hands in Logan’s direction, a somewhat frantic, forced smile plastered on her face. She was hoping it would work. Scott had found what he was looking for, after all.
The deafening silence stretched her nerves ever tighter and she babbled on.
She took a gulp. “See? Safe and sound. And looking perfectly fine, he’s fine, he’s more than fine – he’s – he’s…” Her smile slipped as she gave Logan the once over. ‘Freshly laid’ was what popped into her head. She decided not to actually say that one.
Marie scooted up behind Logan and slipped her arms around him. She peeked out past Logan’s arm.
“Hi, Scott.”
Scott stood there like a wax dummy as he watched Logan’s hands slide along her arms and hug them to his chest.
A high state of piss-offedness cut thru Scott’s words. “Logan. Get dressed. You’re coming with mbr>

Logan blew out a short laugh. “I am, huh? What makes you think so?”
Scott was about to hyperventilate he was so angry. “Indulge me,” he bit out. He turned and slammed his way out the door.
Logan didn’t move for a moment. He pulled Marie out from behind him and gave her a quick kiss. “Wait here, darlin’. This may get ugly.” He casually went to grab the rest of his clothes.
Jubilee’s eyes darted around the barren apartment and looked for a place to hide. She couldn’t wait for Logan to make an exit.
There were all kinds of juicy things she was dying to find out. That Logan was going to be the subject of those juicy things jarred a bit, but stûlh– she and Marie were best of friends. She was itching to hear the details.
She gave way as Logan blew past her without so much as a look. She followed Marie into the bedroom.
Scott stood at the end of the covered second story walkway, looking down the staircase that was awash in torrential rain. Hederedered if Logan would bounce or simply skid to the bottom.
A pointed throat clearing got his attention and he whirled around, his long black duster flapping wetly against the wrought iron railing. He hadn’t heard Logan come up behind – which shouldn’t have surprised him in the least. But it did piss him off all over again.
The two men squared off and sized each other up.
“Marie! So spill, girl. Did you – did he – “ Jubilee stopped dead and took a look around the bedroom. Ok, it was a stupid question.
“Gimme a sec.” Marie pushed the bathroom door somewhat closed and quickly got dressed, tossing her silk robe out the door to land on the bed. Jubilee’s eyes followed it – and widened considerably at the sight of the ripped up sheets. Oh my God!
“Marie – “ She watched her friend come fairly skipping back into the bedroom. Marie had the most pleased smile on her face, so Jubilee’s next question was probably pretty stupid, too – but those sheets! Good Lord! “Did hrt yrt you?”
Marie laughed past the huge grin widening on her face.
“If that was ‘hurt’, I’ll gladly be a masochist the rest of my life.”
Jubilee didn’t know quite what to think. She wanted to be happy for Marie and was afraid for her, all at the same time. This would never work. Logan would hightail it outta here at the first opportunity and the heartbreak left in his wake was something she didn’t want to contemplate.
“Jubilee, do you know where the courthouse is?”
Jubes gawked at her and just blinked. “What?”
“Ya know, where they keep the judges. The kind that do civil ceremonies.”
“What??”
Marie laughed. “You’re beginning to sound like Scott.”
Scott glared at the man standing calmly in front of him and tried to figure out just what to say. He didn’t think it thru very well.
“Logan, this is a new low. Even for you.”
Logan tookomenoment to grind back the urge to haul off and deck this putrid little fuck, spouting off his oh
so superior judgments and accusations.
“I always knew you hated my guts, Summers. But you’re way outta line here and you best be watchin’ what comes outta that mouth of yours.” Or Logan would shut it for him. Permanently.
Scott looked at him with disdain, shaking his head. “How could you? Marie is the best thing you’ve ever had in your life, she’s your best friend. How could you do this to her?”
“Do what?”
“Do what? Do what? Logan, you’re gonna break her heart you stupid bastard! And you can’t tell me you don’t
k/i> /i> that!”
“I don’t know that.” The calmly stated response threw Scott for a second.
“Logan, Marie’s thinking is all screwed up, this is all too new to her. She can’t make rational decisions about this, not now, not yet. She still thinks you’re going to ‘protect’ her. She’s making a huge mistake letting you into her bed.”
Logan’s eyes narrowed dangerously and his voice dropped with tightly reined in fury.
“You best be careful what you say about my wife, Summers. She’ll kick your ass before I even get a chance to.” There was a whole lot more he wanted to say, a whole lot more he wanted to do – namely, throw Summers off the top of the stairs. But he didn’t. He turned his back on him and started to walk back to Marie’s apartment.
Scott gaped after his retreating form, trying to process what he thought Logan had just said.
“What did you say? Logan!” Scott should have known better, but he went after him and made a grab for his arm. “Logan – “
That did it. No one got away with invading Logan’s space without his permission. Blades shot forth with a harsh metallic ringing and Scott found himself slammed up against the wall with adamantium in his face.
“I said, you best be careful what you say about my wife.” He tilted his head a fraction of a degree. It was meant to intimidate. It worked. “You hear me that time?”
Scott stared at him, dumbstruck - and scared. Truly scared. He knew he’d pushed Logan as far as he dared. Logan rarely let loose his claws outside of missions or sparring sessions in the Danger Room. Scott thought he’d better keep his mouth shut – at least until Logan was out of arm’s reach.
Logan gave him a shove and let him go. Furious, Scott made sure to wait until he’d moved off a pace or two. “Xavier is going to have a lot to say about this.”
Logan never even turned around. “He can say all he likes. If Xavier has a problem with us being together, he won’t be seeing either of us again.”
“Come on, baby, pack up. We’re going.”
“Going?”
Jubilee looked back and forth between them and wondered if Scott was still in once piece. He hadn’t come back with Logan.
Marie didn’t put forth another question. She started stuffing her meager belongings in a bag.
Jubilee’s lip quivered in a pout. She didn’t want Marie disappearing like this.
“When you coming back?”
Logan turned those dark intense eyes of his on her and she paled.
“Who says we are?”
“Logan! You can’t just run off with her.” She scampered after them as they left the bedroom.
“Watch me.”
As Scott had mistakenly done, she went and grabbed at Logan’s arm. He stopped dead. The murderous glare in his eyes when he looked down at her made her let go of him. Instantly.
“Everybody seems to think they know what’s best for us. Well, I got news for ya. ‘We’ know what’s best for us. And what’s best for us is ‘us’. Got it?”
Jubilee stood and stammered. “Well, dontcha need a witness or something?”
To her utter amazement, Logan did that ‘turning into someone else’ thing he’d done earlier today. She gaped at him. He was laughing. And he wasn’t laughing ‘at’ her, she was surprised to note. He was laughing with what in another person would be called ‘delight’. Her brain hurt.
“You volunteering?”
Wit ano another thought, Jubilee jumped at the chance. She wasn’t letting this little drama out of her sight.
She beamed. “Be happy to.”
Logan reached for Marie’s hand. “Let’s get the hell outta here. Come on, Jubilee. You’re driving.”
The three of them headed for Jubes’ car.
Scott was nowhere to be seen.
“Yes, sir, I found him. He was at Marie’s.”
Xavier blew out a relieved sigh and nodded at Jean, mouthing ‘it’s Scott’. “I am delighted to hear it, Scott.” There was a long blank silence. “Scott?”
Jean craned her neck and tried to listen in.
Scott crammed his cell phone tighter into the side of his head. He didn’t know how to say this. He’d watched from across the street, sheltering from the downpour, as the three of them loaded up and took off like a streak in Jubilee’s car. He was stranded.
“Professor, he says he’s going to marry her.”
Scott pulled the phone away and looked at it like had sprouted legs and wings and upper thoraxes and any other weird insect part he could think of. Was Charles laughing?
“That is wonderful news, Scott.” Finally! He was frankly surprised it had taken this long. Marie’s newly found control had certainly sped things up a bit.
Scott blinked. “It is?”
Xavier’s grin was audible, if such a thing were possible. “Yes, Scott. It is wonderful news, indeed. Give them my congratulations. Did they say when?”
“Uh – uh – “
“Scott?” What on earth was the matter with him?
“Uh, they left. Jubilee went with them. I don’t know where, but I don’t think they’re going back to the mansion. Logan and I – uh, we had some words.”
Charles rolled his eyes. As if he couldn’t have guessed.
“I am certain they will be back soon. Jubilee is with them and she will no doubt be checking in. Good night, Scott.” He hung up.
Jean tapped her nails on the desk. “Well?”
Charles beamed. “It seems nuptials are in the air.”
Her face lit up. “Really?” She was as delighted as Charles.
“Talk to that husband of yours, would you? He seems to be of a different opinion than you or I.”
Jean arched a thin eyebrow. “Be glad to.”
“So, I just leave you guys here?” Jubilee was still riding high on the cornball romanticalness of the day. They’d driven all night, to Maryland. With Jubes in tow, they found a judge and rushed thru a civil ceremony that still brought tears to her eyes.
Logan gave her a smooch on the cheek and told her to get lost. “We ain’t bringin’ you along on the honeymoon.”
Jubilee had never seen two happier people. She was reluctant to leave.
“Well, so how you going to get back?”
“We’ll catch the train. Now get.”
Logan swatted her on the ass and she got moving. But not before he’d bent down and whispered in her ear. “Thank you, Jubilee. You’re a good friend to Marie. We both appreciate this.”
Jubilee went and hugged Marie. “What do I tell ‘em?”
“Tell them anything you like. We’ll be back in a week.”
It was a helluva week. Scott got his head screwed on straight, with helpful insistence from his wife. Jubilee buzzed around in a happy daze. And Logan spent the most exhausting, blissful week of his entire life.
Marie was insatiable. Healing factor aside, he was hard pressed to keep up with her.
He taught her everything he knew about touch. And she taught him some things he didn’t know that he didn’t know. It was quite the eye-opener.
“What kinda movies you say you and Jubilee have been watching?” Out of breath, he stared at her and tried to get his galloping heart back under control.
Marie swallowed a laugh. “Oh, it’s not the movies so much as the books. They are quite instructive.”
“I’ll say.”
When they returned, they were both somewhat surprised to find Scott awaiting them at the train station.
Logan looked at their welcoming committee and swore under his breath.
“Logan.” Scott nodded in greeting. “Marie.” He smiled at her and kissed her cheek. “Congratulations. Charles is anxious to see you both. And much as it pains me to say this, Logan, he’s happy with the arrangement.” He shrugged. “I guess I am, too.”
“Well, that’s real gracious of ya, Summers.” His tone left Scott squirming under his scrutiny.
Scott looked at the ground and scuffed his boot. “Yeah. Well. Maybe I was wrong about some things.” He looked back up and nailed Logan with a ruby-tinted stare. “Don’t ever make me right about them.”
Logan actually laughed at him. “Not a chance, One-Eye. Get us home, would ya?”
Scott did.
