Chapter 8
Remy took a shower after the movie was over. Then Rogue did the same. When she came out of the bathroom, he sat on the couch casually, a towel draped across his hips and loosely knotteShe She was a little surprised to see him. She figured he would leave when he was alone.
"Still here, Chere." He said. Then the slight smile left his lips. "Won't always have time to stick around fo a movie." He frowned. "An you deserve better den a man who don't stick around."
"Ah'm not settling for you, Gambit." She said. "Ah don't know how good I'll be at making commitments, and Ah'm not interested in anyone else right now." She raised an eyebrow. "Ah know it's not exactly a promise, but it's the best Ah can do right now." He was a little surprised. She was using his lines. And he found that he didn't like it too much. But he couldn't complain.
"Take you any way I can." He said. She smiled. Then he continued. "Did wan to talk bout Pietro, though."
"Ah thought he'd been quiet recently." She said, shifting uncomfortably in her bathrobe.
"Quiet, yes, but he's still been around." He stood up and walked toward her. "Been keepin' an eye on who he's been visitin'. Seems he's got a friend in the rougher parts of town an de man's a scientist."
"Don't get hurt unnecessarily." Rogue said, frowning. "Ah wouldn't want somethin' to happen to you just to find out-" Her words were cut off by Kitty and Kurt walking through the front door, literally. She had phased them both through and stood staring at her scantily clad roommate and a nearly naked Cajun.
"Rogue?" Kurt's voice was shocked. "What is this man doing here?" When neither answered, he didn't need an explanation. He growled and lunged at Gambit. Kitty caught him and held him back. Gambit fell automatically into a fighting stance.
"No, Kurt." She said, holding him tightly. "It's okay, right?" She looked at Rogue who nodded quickly. "He's not here to cause trouble." Gambit didn't take his eyes off the man who looked nothing short of homicidal.
"How long has this been going on?" He demanded, looking back and forth between gambit and his sister.
"Mon ami," Gambit began, "your sister got a right to date-"
"Seien Sie ruhig!" He shouted, switching to German in his distress. Then he shook his head. "Shut up, I'm asking her."
"Ah'm seein Remy, Kurt." She said. "Ah'm sorry Ah didn't tell you, Kurt. But I knew how you'd react."
"You were right about that." He snarled, starting forward again. "Zis man vorks for Magneto. And you're sleeping vit de enemy!" When he got angry, his accent became thicker and more pronounced.
"Remy's not the enemy." Kitty said, surprising everyone. She placed a hand on her lover's arm. He looked at her in surprise.
"Kannten Sie in diesem aus?" He asked.
"Yes I knew about a little of it, and I did a little bit of checking up on our friend." She said, gesturing to Remy. The tall man crossed his arms over his bare chest and looked at her curiously.
"Just what did you find out, Petite?" He asked.
"Let's just say that you've been busy lately." She replied. "But not with Magneto." She turned back to Kurt. "Nothing he's done lately has had anything to do with the X-Men and he's made no moves against any of us. Which is more than I can say for some of the people Xavier's been taking in." She was referring to Toad's recent move into the mansion after the abandonment of the boardinghouse. To her relief, Kurt relaxed his posture a little, but he looked angry.
"Hurt my sister, or anyone I care about, and I'll bring your world down around you." He didn't look at Kitty or his sister; he just vanished in a puff of smoke and smell of sulfur. Kitty hung her head and sighed deeply.
"And things were going so well." She turned to Remy. "Go put something on, Gumbo." She said, jerking her head toward the bedroom. "I need to talk to my roommate about you behind your back." She was a little irritated, but not really hostile.
"As you wish." He bowed slightly and retired to the bedroom. Kitty approached Rogue.
"Just tell me you know what you're doing." She said, holding one terry-covered shoulder. "And tell me he's not going to hurt you."
"Ah can't do either." She said. "But he won't try to hurt me, and Ah'll figure the rest out." She smiled a little. "Ah've never wanted anyone like this. And Ah've never met anyone who wanted me like this." She spoke softly. "And no, it's not going to be easy, or normal, but what in our lives is either?"
"Good point." Kitty said. "We can never make things easy on ourselves, can we?" She let out a loud sigh. "I'm going to have to do unspeakable things in order to make this up to Kurt, but you were right not to tell him at first."
Over Kitty's shoulder, Rogue saw a white handkerchief being waved from the bedroom door like a flag of peace. She snickered, in spite of herself. y tuy turned around and spotted him.
"Safe fo de thief to come out now?" Gambit asked, sticking his head out. When they nodded he came out to the living room. He was dressed and held a backpack in his hands. "S'time fo me to leave." He said, approaching Rogue. He touched her cheek softly with a gloved finger. Then he headed for the door. "Be seein you ladies again, ." ." He said, he slipped the backpack on his shoulders and paused wiis his hand on the doorknob. Then he returned to where they were standing wth a glint of mischief in his eye. "You were supposed to remind me, Chere." Rogue groaned aloud when she realized his intent. Kitty looked startled when the tall man slipped his hands around her waist and bent her over backwards, planting a kiss firmly on her mouth for a brief moment. Then he stood her up, winked at her and went back to the door. "Don' tell yo boyfriend bout dat, Petite." He said over his shoulder. Then he walked out and was gone.
