J ProPhile:
No rest for the wicked and all that… one day you’ll be up to here. Morgan: Nice observation on the Mummers. ;)
Readers/Reviewers: Well… it’s 2005.
Eeeesh. Thanks for reading/reviewing
and I hope the new year is nice to you all.
Astrid had,
as moms everywhere would say, had enough.
If Magneto had known better, he would not have taunted her while she had
that look on her face. As it was,
Mystique seemed to recognize the danger and kept herself a safe distance,
carefully standing by the door as if ready to flee at any moment. Sabretooth
looked…tired, Astrid decided, but mostly bored.
He would not be a problem, she thought.
Not when Logan was there to
deal with him if the need arose. “Klappe,” Astrid finally said calmly. “You tire me with your babbling.”
Magneto
stopped, mid-rant, and frowned. “That is
most impolite to interrupt your host in the middle of a speech. Then again…” he
smiled slowly, “why should I expect manners from a filthy Gypsy?”
Astrid
returned his smile and stood smoothly, years of her work in the circus giving
her movements a certain grace and strength most people could only imitate
poorly. She walked slowly but steadily
across the room, Logan watching all carefully.
Why he did not leave, she was not sure but she had an idea it coincided
not only with Sabretooth’s presence but some strange
affection he had for her, beneath his love for Storm. She paused just out of Magneto’s arm’s
reach. “No wonder your parents let them
take you,” she hissed. “You must have
been a terrible child.” She did not give
him much of a chance to retort or strike out at her. She leaned swiftly to one side, bringing her
foot up in a forceful kick to the side of his head. Mystique leapt forward, spinning in mid-air
to kick Astrid across the solar plexus but Astrid was quick, throwing herself
to the floor and rolling backwards to stand.
Logan shoved her bodily out
of the way, his claws coming out as he moved. Sabretooth’s
roar seemed to fill then overflow the confines of the small room but Astrid did
not let it strike the intended fear into her heart or mind. She pressed back against the wall, timing
Mystique’s attack as the blue, startlingly naked woman came towards her. “You don’t have to do this you know,” Astrid
breathed as she neared. “You can let me
go. Kurt…would appreciate it.”
Mystique
froze. “I don’t care,” she hissed,
bringing her fist down and across, backhanding Astrid so hard she split her lip
and bit her tongue.
Astrid spit
the blood out and smiled, her teeth pink with the
residue of the strike. “Sore spot?”
Mystique
did not let herself panic. She wanted to
grab the woman by her shoulders and shake her so hard her eyes rolled back in
her head. She wanted to demand to know how Astrid knew, how MUCH she knew, but
she did not open her mouth. She struck
hard and fast at Astrid’s stomach, only to meet hard metal wall. She howled in unexpected pain and spun to
find Astrid’s fist centimeters from her nose.
“That,”
Astrid gasped, “hurts more than I remember!”
Logan did grabbed her around the middle and slung her over his shoulder,
moving faster than Astrid thought possible with a full grown adult in his arms
and claws extended. She could not tell
which way Logan was going, just that it seemed to be up, through levels of
basement and house, finally coming out into a narrow, ill lit hallway with
flickering electric lights of the old sodium variety.
“Whaddya mean, more than you remember?” he asked, setting
her down but not slowing.
She had to
run to keep up. “Ah,” she breathed,
panting slightly, “once I punched a girl who had her
eyes on Johannes, back when we were younger…”
She grinned at Logan’s
incredulous expression. “No one touches
what’s mine.”
Logan
grinned at that. “Noted.” He skidded to a halt and turned sharply
around. “Get behind me.”
“What? Why?”
“Just do
it,” he growled, shoving her back. Sabretooth appeared at the end of the hall, his eyes dark
and luminous in the halflight, his hands curled into
loose fists. “I could do with a new rug,”
Logan growled. “That ratty fur might just match my new
bedspread.”
Sabretooth snorted. “Martha Stewart’s out on bail?” he
rumbled, leaping forward like a giant cat, covering the distance between them
in two bounds.
Astrid
shrieked involuntarily, staggering back as the two mutants met midair, fur
literally flying, blood splattering along one wall as Logan’s
claws made contact with Sabretooth’s arm. She began backing away, unwilling to take her
eyes of her friend, her son’s protector, and backed right into someone’s
chest. She gasped and turned, her fist
already drawn back. “Oh! It’s just you!”
Forge
smiled. “Just me,” he replied calmly. “Come on.
I’ll take you somewhere safe while these two fight it out.” He took her elbow and began to lead her away,
not blinking once at the fight behind them.
Astrid dug
her heels into the carpet, not willing to leave. “Somewhere
safe? We need to get out of here!
The children are safe now it’s our turn!”
She craned her neck to see who was ahead in the snarling, bloody
fight. “Most of us anyway…”
Forge
paused, his face blank. Slowly,
expression crept over him, first amusement, then
thoughtfulness. “So true. We should go back to the
Institute. They’ll be waiting for us, no
doubt…”
Astrid
frowned. She did not like how he was
speaking, so stilted and distant. “Forge, correct? Have you been… hit on the head or anything?” She extricated her elbow from his grasp and
took a step back. “Maybe
with something heavy?”
“No,” he
laughed. “I’m just fine. We’re all just fine…” His glance flickered up, giving Astrid a
second of warning. She gasped and ducked as Tarot struck for the back of her
head. “Damn it! Get her!” The older woman was already running,
disappearing as fast as she could down the hall towards the front of the
mansion.
Tarot, bruised and sorely disheveled cursed Incubus in every
language she could. “You make sure he,”
she jabbed a finger at the fight, “stays here!”
Forge/Incubus
nodded and stood aside, letting Tarot run after Astrid. Incubus was weary. He had been too long without feeding and this
host was running low on all forms of sustenance. It would not be long now before he had to
abandon the body for someone more…useful.
He smiled again, thinking of the infinite
possibilities that awaited him once this mess of a situation was done. Someone young, he thought. Someone in the prime of life…
“Forge!” Logan
shouted, throwing Sabretooth hard. “Get going! Take care of Astrid!”
“Don’t’
worry,” he purred. “I will…”
A/N Next chapter is next to last. Whooo.
