Elizabeth clutched eighteen month old Caleb to her body as she ran, Logan was running behind her, claws extended as they fled from the facility.
‘I can’t believe this is happening! That creep managed to find us!’ Liz thought to herself frantically.
Caleb let out a frightened whimper before he began to cry, Liz gently smoothed his hair as she ran.
Logan spun on his heel and sank his claws into one of Stryker’s men, then kicked the dying body off of his biological weapons.
“Keep runnin’! Don’t look back,” Logan called to Liz as he sank his claws into another one.
Elizabeth felt her blood run cold as blood splattered onto her shirt, turning her body to shield her young son from the sight while she inwardly pleaded, ‘Oh my god! Nick! Nate! Where are you guys?’
The whirling sound of a helicopter engine could be heard overhead, and Elizabeth chanced a glance up, recognizing the S.H.E.I.L.D emblem on the side of the chopper. She kissed the top of Caleb’s blonde haired head in effort to calm him as she raced towards a nearby clearing, ‘come on, Fury… don’t let me down.’
Elizabeth kept running, gasping for breath by the time she neared the chopper, and handed the nearly hysterical toddler over to Nathaniel. The little boy wailed a little longer before calming down in his step-father’s arms.
“Kayla? – Ruby?” Elizabeth asked in between gasps of air.
Nick gained a saddened look and shook his head, “Kayla’s body was found a few miles off from the Lumberjack site where Logan works… Ruby and her babysitter are no where to be found.”
Elizabeth took a few more deep breaths before giving a stone faced look to Nick Fury, “I’d bet I know where they are.”
“Elizabeth, Kayla’s gone,” Nate replied.
“Maybe… or maybe she was part of the reason why we were discovered,” Elizabeth answered as she grabbed some gear from the helicopter.
“Nick… get my family to safety… and then I’m going after Stryker,” Elizabeth stated.
“Liz!” Nate exclaimed in alarm.
“I have to, Nathaniel. If I’m right, he not only has the birth father of my son… he’s also got my god sister. What kind of big sibling would I be if I didn’t try to get her back? Especially with my training,” Elizabeth challenged.
Nate’s steel eyes didn’t waver in their resolve as he replied, “Elizabeth Rose, you’re too involved. You’re going to get hurt.”
“I’ve been hurt… and worse,” Elizabeth answered.
“This sick freak experiments on mutants like they’re nothing more than common lab rats. They’re people, with the same rights as you or me, Nathaniel. If it were you in this situation, don’t think for a second I wouldn’t be going in head first, guns blazing,” Liz added.
Nate shook his head with a sigh, “Ever the stubborn one. It makes you a great politician… just don’t lose sight of the other important things in your life.”
28-year-old Elizabeth bolted up in bed, she glanced around, chest heaving for breath before she relaxed and fell back against the familiar pillows and mattress.‘I’m beginning to understand what Logan goes through,’ She thought to herself as she cupped her face with her hands.
“Which was it this time?” A sleepy voice asked.
“The facility, and the Island,” Liz replied, her voice a bit shaky.
“Quit beating yourself up,” Nate’s answer floated to her. She heard the futon springs creek as he stood up and walked over to her bed.
“A sham marriage to a woman with PTSD from events so bizarre and classified she can’t even talk to a therapist about it… man who’d you tick off in a past life?” Liz half joked.
“There’s that dark humour again,” Nate countered with a grin. He kissed the side of her forehead.
“You make it sound like living with you is some kind of medieval torture,” He added.
“Isn’t it?” Liz asked.
“No. It bothers you that Ruby was taken right from your arms, it bothers you that you couldn’t help Logan to save his family… and that his memory is forever lost due to the adamantium bullets that penetrated his brain. It’s astounding he’s still alive, Liz… he may have lost his memories but… he’s still got you, and he’s remembering you,” Nate offered.
“The fact it all bothers you, just goes to show how strong you are, how big your heart is. I love that about you.”
Liz gave a half smile, and a soft sigh when a young child’s voice was heard calling out over the baby monitor, “Mama! Dada!”
Nathaniel smiled and looked to Liz, “I’ll get her.”
Elizabeth nodded a bit and laid back down in bed while Nate grabbed his house coat and headed towards the nursery.
Since the incident with Stryker discovering them, they’d relocated back to New York, figuring he wouldn’t think to look for them in Nate’s home town. New York had nothing to do with Elizabeth, but she quickly grew to love it and discover that the city its self was where she wanted to be. Currently they resided in a maximum security high rise condo apartment complex, and just two and a half years ago had welcomed a baby girl into their lives. The little pink bundle was Nathaniel’s biological daughter, Kiara Deborah Rose Payton. Elizabeth had agreed to co-parenting her with Nate after he’d expressed a desire for a biological child, mainly due to the pressures placed on him by his parents.
Caleb had been born two and a half weeks early, blonde-haired, green eyed, and just six pounds ten ounces. Elizabeth’s labour had been slow to progress however, and resulted in a cesarean section delivery. Kiara had been a natural birth, eight days overdue, the labour only lasted about four hours from first contraction to final push, however she had tipped the scales at a staggering eleven pounds.
“When I had Caleb it hurt to stand up, this time it hurts to sit down,” Liz recalled telling Nate as she stood up soon after Kiara’s birth.
Kiara was undeniably their daughter. She had Liz’s sky blue eyes and Nate’s wavy blonde hair, his complexion, and most of his mannerisms already. She was a definite daddy’s girl as well. Caleb had taken to baby Kiara like a fish to water. A toddler himself, he’d be frequently found saying to his baby sister, “shh don’t cry.”
The little boy would run and get her pacifier if it fell from her mouth and she began to cry as a result. He’d pick up her bottle when she tossed it to the ground. He was so eager to play with her, he even brought some of his cars and blocks to the hospital for when he first met her.
‘All things considered, he really does surprise me… but he scares me as well… more so for his own safety, his future,’ Liz thought to herself.
‘Kara’s much more an average baby… we have to sometimes do trial and error to figure out what she needs… but with Caleb…’
Liz bit her lip and tried to push the train of thought she was on far from her mind.
“There’s my baby girl,” Nate’s voice came over the baby monitor.
“Dada!” Kiara whined with a teary voice.
“What’s wrong?” Nate asked. Liz could guess he was holding their daughter now, and swaying with her.
Kiara replied by giving a whimper.
‘Is she coming down with something?’ Liz thought to herself at the sounds.
“Mommy?” a frightened little voice asked from the doorway.
Liz sat up and looked to the door. A little six year old boy, with blonde hair, and emerald green eyes looked back at her.
‘He got his green eyes from Jason,’ Liz thought to herself for what felt like the millionth time since his birth.
“What is it buddy?” Liz asked.
“Kara needs a doctor,” Caleb replied.
Liz blinked, “Hmm, I was thinking that.”
“Mommy… she needs a doctor now. She’s very sick. She won’t wake up tomorrow if you don’t take her now,” Caleb pressed.
At these words, Liz bolted out of bed and grabbed the nearest articles of clothing she could find. She then grabbed her car keys, not bothering to brush her hair or teeth as she headed towards the nursery.
‘He knew she was in my womb before I even missed my period… or had a single symptom… if he’s this worried… if he’s this certain that he’d come to me and tell me that, I’m not taking chances,’ Liz thought to herself as she entered the nursery.
Nate looked to Elizabeth when she entered the room, “A warning?”
Elizabeth nodded, “I’m going to take her to mother of mercy.”
“Liz she doesn’t have a fever, she’s tired, look at her,” Nate prompted.
“Nate, he knew before we did that she was coming… I won’t take chances… she’s been very thirsty lately, I thought maybe it was just the summer, but maybe it isn’t. She’s very cranky, she’s tried all the time, and if she isn’t gulping down water like she’s been in a desert she’s chowing down on food like it’s the last she’ll ever have,” Liz pressed.
Nathaniel’s eyes widened a little as he looked to Kiara, “what could that mean?”
“I don’t know. There’s a few ideas I’ve researched but her pediatrician refuses to investigate. Claims I’m not around enough to know these things and men aren’t good enough to know when something is wrong with their kids,” Liz stated as she took Kiara from Nate and began dressing her.
Nathaniel nodded, “I know we need to find a new doctor, it’s just not easy with … well…”
“I know. I’m not blaming anyone or anything…. But I’ll never forgive myself if something happens to one of my babies because of that loony toon,” Liz soothed. She finished dressing Kiara and picked her up, the little girl seemed almost hysterical.
“Thirsty!!” She screamed, slamming a tiny fist into Liz’s arm.
“We’ll get you some water after you see the doctor,” Liz replied, rubbing Kara’s back.
Kiara let out a blood curling scream that ricocheted off the walls. Nathaniel ran a hand through his hair as he looked to the clock in the nursery, it was two in the morning.
Five hours later, Nate set a bowl of cheerios in front of Caleb along with some orange juice. A mug of coffee was set at the table by Nathaniel as he ate his own cereal, the TV set to the morning news. The phone rang, and Nate stood, picking the receiver off the cradle and holding it to his ear, “Hello? Liz, what did they say?”
Small green eyes watched Nathaniel from the kitchen table, Caleb had stopped eating in mid chew.
The little boy watched as Nate’s shoulders began to slightly shake with small sobs.
