Some ‘Laters’ Are Now
The tail slipped gently out of his hand and Jerrin woke,
looking up at Kurt. The kid looked
mussed, like he’d been sleeping, too. Good. “We’re here?” Kurt nodded. Jerrin sat up,
handing Kurt his coat, and pulling up the guitar case. “I’ll stay as long as you need me to stay,
but I can do without the ‘homo’ routine, from anyone.” He shrugged. “I can’t help what I am.”
Kurt helped him up, and took the case as they left the van. “Will you finally tell me what you mean by
that?”
Kitty’s erstwhile lynch mob hung around to hear the answer,
as Scott hung up the keys on the garage’s pegboard. “Remember when you asked me if I thought that bisexuality was
genetic?” Kurt nodded again. “For my race, it is. I am physically, and anatomically
bi-sexed. Dr. McCoy properly described
me as a hermaphrodite, except I’m never fully both genders at once. I’m either one, or the other, or transitioning
in between. I think the trendy
scientific term for it is ‘Intersexual’*.”
Kurt’s tail perked up.
“Thank Gott. I thought I
was going crazy. I couldn’t understand…
why in some of my memories you’re…” His
cheeks turned dark, almost purple,
“…you’re a girl.” Kurt couldn’t
meet his eyes from his embarrassment… but the disgust and homophobia that
Jerrin was afraid he would feel in him simply wasn’t there. His friends were radiating a distinct
uneasiness, though.
Jerrin sat on the hood of a car in the garage, and reached
for his guitar case. Unzipping a compartment
in the lid, he flipped through some papers before pulling out two portrait
photos. He handed them to Kurt. “This is my immediate family. That’s Mom, Dad, and my sister Jolie and me,
all in our usual genders.” The people
in the photos were Qards, with the typical six fingers. The bluish/grayish skin overtone were a
common characteristic, as were the elfish ears and carnivore’s teeth. They all showed some extent of androgyny in
their features. In the first picture a dark-haired woman with a confident
expression and Jerrin’s features stood close to a slightly shorter, athletic
looking man with golden brown hair and chestnut beard. In front of them were Jerrin, and a
green-eyed girl with her father’s hair.
“That’s Jo and I in the second one, too, but in that one we’d each
Changed.”
Kurt was gazing at the second photo. In it, a femimine version of Jerrin was
sharing a smile with a blonde-brown haired youth with stubbly cheeks. “You do resemble your mother… but … I have
seen this girl. I know her.”
Biblically, Kurt, but let’s not get into that. “Compare my female form to Mom. It’s spooky.” Kurt shook his head in amused wonderment, and Jerrin passed the
photos to the others. It was
interesting to see their expressions change, as if seeing pictures of him with
his family made him somehow less of an alien, or a stranger.
“What do you mean by, your ‘usual genders’?” Kitty asked.
“Maybe he should finish this inside,” Logan said, as he
joined them. “In the rec-room please,
so the younger kids don’t have to hear about it.” Scott handed him the photos, and Logan looked at them as he waved
them out of the garage and on to the living room.
“Jamie is the youngest, and he already knows about my part
in this,” Kurt said. “Why not let him
hear the rest, so he doesn’t think the worst of me?” Logan threw up his hands, and gave the pictures to the Professor.
Jerrin walked stiffly to the couch and sat. He briefly covered what he’d said in the
garage, and continued. “A Qard’s gender
is determined by one third willpower, one third hormonal cycles, and the last
third by their reactions to environmental influences, such as stress,
frustration, and emotional upset.
That’s only one third I have direct control of. I have a slight preference to the masculine,
and if things are going well, I can manage to stay that way about two-thirds of
the time. However, things have not
been going well lately, and the Changes have been involuntary and more
frequent. Does that answer your
question, Kitty?”
“So, you can really be on both sides of the gender gap?”
Jean said.
“Not at the same time.
I switch sides. Technically,
we’re gender neutral, as our putative genders are preferential only.” He looked at Hank. “I’m sure you’ve watched the films they took of me. Did you notice the asexual state I passed
through each time?”
“I did. I must say I
was horrified at the barbarities they subjected you to.”
“Nothing like being strapped naked to a table under a bunch of
cameras while my body parts re-arranged themselves,” Jerrin grimaced at the
memory. “Twice.”
“They filmed the ‘staring’ you talked of.” Kurt looked upset.
Jerrin nodded. “Male
to female is the harder Change, for me.
I get… emotional. ‘Qard PMS’, Mom
calls it. Female to male is always
easier, for some reason, probably because I feel I’m returning to my preferred
state. That’s something else I promised
to explain to you when we got out of there.”
“Didn’t you think you could have told me?” Kurt said. “They already knew… the only one who didn’t
know was me. Did you think it was funny
to conceal this from me?” Kurt wasn’t
just upset, he looked positively wounded.
“I am sorry. You’ve
experienced unwarranted hate because of your mutation. Homophobia and its relatives are just as
hurtful. I considered you a friend, and
I didn’t want to risk that. Your ‘God
loves you anyway’ comment told me you weren’t immune to that kind of
attitude. What did you expect me to
say? It was bad enough they were
calling me a homo. Your society says
that people who don’t fit the rigid ‘normal’ gender roles are dangerous and
perverse, and… I was weak enough to want to shield the one normal interaction I
had in there from that kind of stress.”
Kurt bowed his head, looking pensive. “You feared I would react badly if I knew
you were different.”
“What would you think if I said ‘God loves you anyway’ about
you being a mutant, or a German, or any kind of minority? There’s a patronizing condemnation inherent
in the statement, just as odious as what you said to me. It’s if as if you’re saying that He
may love you, but no-one else should.”
Kurt winced, and nodded his understanding.
Jamie looked puzzled.
“What happens to your…” He made
a vague gesture near his belt-buckle.
“…uh, ‘guy stuff’ when you’re a girl?”
Nuh-uh, little boy.
Not even. “I understand your
curiosity, but perhaps you should ask your teachers about that. Dr. McCoy has all the information if he
feels it is appropriate to share it with you.”
Or you should wait another ten years. If Kurt asked, on the other hand… “This is the way my people are and always have been. I won’t apologize for it.” He yawned so hard he sat blinking in
dizziness. Too much talking, not
enough sleep. “While I got a nap in
the van, I’m still very tired. I know
we haven’t finished talking yet, Kurt, but I hope I’ve made some things clear.”
“My memories make a little more sense now. The rest can wait, I guess.” Kurt’s tail twitched, and he didn’t seem to
know what to do with his hands.
Something was still eating at him. “Not all of it, though,” Jerrin said. “Does anyone mind if we have a private chat up in my room before
I pass out? No? Good.”
He got up and struggled up the stairs, not waiting to see if anyone
would raise an objection. Kurt came
with him, carrying the case. Once in
his room, Jerrin delved under the dobro for another hidden compartment, and
brought out a big shoulder bag that shouldn’t have fit inside the case even if
the guitar was absent. Kurt frowned in
confusion, and Jerrin sighed, “Don’t ask.”
The kid smiled tightly.
Jerrin took the bag into the bathroom and changed into some
sleepwear. Thank the Lord he’d been
given his own bathroom. The distress
his presence would cause in either of the student facilities would be
enormous. Comical, though. “What do you need to ask me?”
Kurt paced at the foot of the bed where Jerrin sat. “Why… why are you limping like that? Is that because of me?”
Jerrin suppressed a surprised smile. “Um… Saddle sore? Your attentions were vigorous and insistent, and I did most of the
receiving.”
Kurt brow was furrowed in distress. “Like, the marks on your neck?” Jerrin nodded. Kurt grimaced and stopped near him. “Do you… hate me?” He
whispered hoarsely, seeming on the verge of tears.
“No, Kurt. Far from
it. I don’t blame you, I only blame
them. It happened because of the drugs,
and nothing else. You are not evil or
deviant**. In my opinion, you were violated
just as much as I was. We are fellow victims, you and I. Please keep that in mind.” Slowly he reached out and took hold of
Kurt’s shoulder. He gently drew him
closer until their foreheads touched.
“We’ll get through this, my friend, I promise.” Jerrin’s stomach clenched at the smell of
tears on Kurt’s velvet cheeks. He wiped
them away with a shaking hand. “Can we
finish this later, Kurt? I really need
to sleep.”
Kurt smiled a little.
“Thank you, Jer.” He gave Jerrin
an impulsive, almost embarrassed buss on the cheek, before he hurried from the
room.
Jer? He had a
nickname… Sleep took him with a smile on his face.
* A/N: Check Wikipedia for “Intersexuality” to find that
even among humans, Gender isn’t as clear-cut a deal as we’ve always been taught
it is.
** A/N: It is from this I derived the story’s title. Despite doing things that he thinks of as
being Evil (due to the chemical coercion), Kurt is yet an Innocent.
And, lastly, I couldn’t resist the chapter title, and its
sideways reference to the NowLaters candy.
