Chapter 65

Chapter 65

Kurt waited until he was certain Logan had gone, calculating the time it would take Logan to get to the garage and head the bike down the drive. If he didn’t time everything perfectly, he’d lose Logan to speed and the night.

“You aren’t leaving without me, Logan,” Kurt said and pushed off the blankets. He changed quickly and grabbed up his already packed backpack, made certain he had the money and charge card the Professor had given him and his helmet he’d hidden away in the closet.

Hiding in the shadows of the balcony, Kurt listened and watched, refusing to allow the hurt he felt deter him from his goal. He had to be strong now and determined. He could not let Logan drive him away no matter what Logan said or did.

Logan appeared, pushing his motorcycle down the drive. Twenty feet from the gate, Logan started up his cycle, the barrier opening like a gaping maw.

Kurt’s heart did a flip flop as Logan took off and he prayed his trajectory calculations would prove true.

He “ported,” landing astride the cycle behind Logan, grabbing hold to keep from being pulled off by the wind.

Logan swerved and skidded, coming to a halt just outside the gates.

Pulling off his helmet, Logan snarled, “what the hell do ya think yer doin’, elf?” Logan’s eyes gleamed in the darkness, narrowed and cold and angry. His teeth gritted together, lips pulled back like an animal about to bite.

Kurt pulled off his own helmet and shoved hair from his eyes, putting on his fiercest expression. “I’m coming with you, Logan.”

“No, yer not, darlin’.” Logan’s hand shot out and shoved Kurt off the motorcycle with the heel of his hand to Kurt’s chest.

“Hey! Watch it!” Kurt growled and picked himself up off the ground. “I’m going with you and you might as well accept it.”

Logan rolled his eyes. “What is wrong with you? Are you deaf? Insane? Yer not goin’ anywhere with me. Yer gonna stay here, elf. Safe and sound. Outta my reach before somethin’ really bad happens.”

“I can handled it,” Kurt shot back. “I don’t need you to protect me, not from anyone and certainly not from you.”

“You are crazy...that or stupid.”

That stung and Kurt remembered the Professor’s words. Logan might say anything to push Kurt away, hurtful words meant to dissuade him from pursuing Logan.

“You’re the stupid one if you think I’m going to let you ride out of here alone. Who knows what kind of trouble you would get into without me to temper your behavior.” Kurt crossed his arms against his chest and lifted his chin. “You think leaving is going to solve your problems, make the pain go away? Well, you’re wrong, Logan.”

“Maybe I am, but if I get inta trouble, darlin’, I’ll get myself out.”

“Not without me. I’m going with you and you can’t stop me.”

“You think I can’t?” The devil was in Logan’s eyes, hard and black as obsidian.

Oh no, wrong words. He’d all but challenged Logan. Now he had to find the words to soothe and convince.

“Logan, please,” Kurt made a placating motion with his hand. “Please hear the wisdom of what I am saying. I know something is horribly wrong. I know She hurt you in some way that was terrible. If you go out into the world without someone to help you control this...thing...that is trying to escape from inside you...you could hurt people.” Kurt took a step closer. “You could kill someone, Logan. And I can’t bear the thought of what that would do to you.”

“And I can’t bear the thought of turning this thing inside me on you, elf,” Logan countered with vehemence. “Talk ta Cassie about what I’m capable of. Ask her what she saw the other mornin’ when she looked in my eyes. I can’t promise you won’t see the same thing. What if I really hurt you? What if I did worse?”

Kurt moved closer, within touching distance. He reached out and brushed a hand over Logan’s hair. “You won’t. I trust in what we have together. I trust in your love.”

Logan shook his head, staring at Kurt like he was seeing a ghost. He grabbed Kurt’s wrist, a tight grip meant to test. “You are crazy, elf.”

“No, just in love with you,” Kurt replied, refusing to flinch from the pain. “You are my lover, my friend, my team mate. I believe in you even if you don’t believe in yourself right now.”

“Yer puttin’ yer trust in the wrong place.”

“No, I’m not.”

Logan’s dark eyes bore into Kurt’s, searching for doubt, looking for weakness to exploit. Kurt steeled himself against the pain in his wrist and met Logan’s gaze with all the determination he could muster.

Yet what he saw in his lover’s eyes almost made him flinch.

But he held steady until the grip loosened and released. Kurt pushed away the desire to rub the throbbing from his wrist.

Logan turned away, staring into the darkness. His shoulders hunched and fingers tapped on his knee.

Kurt imagined Logan searching for a way to force Kurt to stay. But then Logan turned on him with a manic expression.

“You don’t really know how dangerous I am, do you?” Logan said. “You don’t know what I’m capable of...no more than Cassie is.”

“Yes, I know. I’ve seen what you can do. I know your potential, Logan. And I’ll still not leave you.”

Logan’s eyes narrowed and he shook his head once more. A frustrated expression worked it’s way across Logan’s face and a hiss slid between clenched teeth.

“Straighten yer halo, elf and put on yer helmet,” Logan growled, turning to pull on his own. Turning back to pierce Kurt with that hard, dark gaze, Logan added, “then ya better hold on cause it’s gonna be a long night’s ride.”
