Tabby laced
her fingers together and stared at the junctures absently. Lucas snuffled softly in his carrier, full of
baby cereal and juice, his nascent powers dormant. She was glad for that… she could not have stood it if he had
started bawling. It had been a very long
week, a very long morning. The room was
sparse, bare of almost all furniture save for a low table that had seen better
days and a sofa that had seen both sides of the Nixon administration. There was a tiny kitchenette but the water in
the sink ran brown and the small fridge smelled of rotten fish and something
even less pleasant. She glanced at the Styrofoam
cooler she had bought at the gas station down the road and it’s
contents of ice and Lucas’s food. _How
did this happen to me? Again? _ She had come up from things like this,
she thought. Wanda had not come back
after she promised she would only be gone a few hours. She had promised, Tabby thought angrily, that she would not leave her alone any
longer than she absolutely had to. Some
time around five a.m., Tabby had heard
someone trying to jimmy open the bedroom window in the alleged safe house
Mystique had set them up in. She had
grabbed Lucas and fled, taking only her wallet and the clothes she had on, her
son’s diaper bag and Wanda’s key ring.
She let herself fall sideways on the sofa and shifted onto her back,
staring at the water stained ceiling.
The Bayville Motor Inn was not, she decided, the worst place to hang out
but she hated having Lucas here. _God
only knows what kind of mold is in that stain… dropping little spores onto my
baby. I swear, if he gets gills or pox
or something, I’m gonna kill someone. _ She sighed deeply
and forced herself to her feet, padding over to the heavily curtained
window. The smell of old fabric, damp
from some unknown leak, permeated her senses as she tried to part the drapery
just enough to peek out into the gravel parking lot. There was one car, an old Gremlin, parked
directly across from her but it was obviously empty and up on blocks. No one was going to be bothering her any time
soon, she thought, returning to the sofa.
Wanda was gone and she did not know where to, someone had tried to get
into the safe house and she was, she decided, so confused that it seemed like a
good idea to just never speak to anyone again, spare herself the misery.
“We’re
missing six,” Storm murmured to Banshee.
The students were sitting in rows in the dining hall, arranged by
section. The new students were sitting
nearest the kitchen door, then came the students who
had been there one to two years, then the rest of the students, the “old guard”
who had been there since the start. “Warren
and Betsey will be here shortly, if all goes well, but I can’t wait for them to
start looking.”
“Who is
it? Wait…” Sean sighed. “Let me guess. Kurt and Kitty…”
“That’s
two,” Storm agreed. “Rahne,
Jamie, Amara, and Todd.”
Sean let
out a long breath and closed his eyes. “Multiples?” He did
not even have to see Storm nod to know she was confirming this. “Okay. I’ll keep an eye here if you want to
start looking with Beast. You know them better than I do…”
Storm
paused for just a moment, then nodded, turning and
striding, practically running, out of the room.
Rogue chose the moment to approach Banshee. “I know where Todd went,” she said softly,
her eyes tired. “I can get him for you.”
“Rogue,” he
sighed, “I don’t want you leaving this room. We don’t know what’s going on out
there and I can’t let you just wander off, all by your self.”
“I won’t be
far,” she said quickly. “He’s in the
house, not outside… I bet he doesn’t even know what’s going on…” She looked winsome, not her usual angry
self. She tried her best to keep the
innocent expression on her face as Sean considered. She was banking on him not knowing her well
enough for her to get by with the act and, a few moments later, she was
rewarded for her deception when Sean nodded curtly. “I’ll be right back,” she promised. “Just five minutes!”
“I’m timing
you!” he said as she sprinted from the room.
Rogue did
not look back but merely waved over her shoulder as she turned the corner into
the hall. She slowed her steps and her
expression became a scowl. _When I find
him, I’m going to smack him silly… _ Todd had been right behind her as
they were herded into the house but when she had turned to say something to
him, he was gone. She had not had a
moment to look for him and now, she was virtually panicking in her anger. She could not shake the image of him, laying as if dead, in that small cell half way between
anywhere and there. She retraced their
steps to the side door, leading out to the yard where Logan
certainly still was, and she sighed. “Here’s
as good a place as any to start,” she muttered out loud. Slowly, she walked back towards the dining
hall, opening closet doors and peeking into the study as she went. No sign of Todd anywhere. “Damn it,” she breathed, stopping down the
hall from the dining area.
“Your
friend is with me,” a female voice intoned lightly.
Rogue
turned and found herself face to face with someone vaguely familiar but
altogether strange. “Halloween
already?”
Minerva
smiled tightly and smoothed her hands over her traditional garb. “Your friend is safe with us. He’s asking about you. Please, follow me.”
Rogue
knitted her brows. “Uh…
no. I don’t know you! How’d you get in here?” She stepped backwards once, then twice. “Banshee!” she called. “Come here a sec…”
Minerva
growled under her breath. “I *told* them
mortals were a bad idea!” she sighed, grabbing Rogue by the elbow.
