Zac sat in the food court of the mall, waiting. The movie had ended forty minutes ago, he’d gotten enough food to make Liz and Nate think that they’d only stopped in for something to eat before dropping Kiara off at home. Currently, Skylar was in the ladies room with her.
For what seemed like the millionth time, he combed his fingers through his now mussed hair. The secret she’d revealed to him and Sky had suddenly put everything into perspective and he was kicking himself for not seeing it sooner.
‘God… how long does it take to pee on a stick?’ Zac thought to himself. He almost laughed when he remembered his own bladder gives him issues when he’s nervous. It dawned on him then that if the situation was making him this anxious, he couldn’t begin to imagine how Kiara was feeling. Kiara and Caleb’s mother, Senator Elizabeth Payton had made it well known just four months ago that she was against mutant registration and believed mutants to be the same as any other group of people. That there was a mix of both good and bad in the mutant community as with any community… although he had to admit keeping on the good side sometimes wasn’t easy. Like right now, and what had happened just an hour ago.
It had been a hassle to get the pharmacist to help them pick a test out. The pharmacist had given Zac a lecture about condoms, self-control, and all but accusing Kiara of promiscuity. Zac had received the lecture because the three of them had refused to comment on if he was the possible father or not. The so called ‘professional’ had topped off the transaction with saying to the three teenagers, ‘there’s always adoption. Her parents need to consent for an abortion. Don’t kill a baby because you gave in to hormones.’
Zac had been hard pressed not to fry the man where he’d stood, or at least shout out, “I’m infertile, you fucktard!”
The whole ordeal had both himself and Sky, while poor Kiara had been left in tears once more. The man knew nothing of the situation and yet there he was making these wild assumptions and accusations. Through patience and calmness he and Sky had managed to get the full story out of Kiara. It had been a shape shifter… but unlike most shape shifters, this one not only took on the form of other people. When it took on the form of another mutant, it acquired the powers of the mutant it was copying.
Zac bit the inside of his cheek, trying to distract himself from the train of thought. Part of him was dying to know who this mutant had mimicked to lure Kiara in, but more than ever he wanted to know how many other girls had gone through this.
Finally he saw his two friends emerge from the ladies room. He casually stood and walked over to them. Kiara was huddled against Sky, she’d been crying, that much was evident. Was that good or bad?
Zac walked over to them, and offered an extended arm to Kiara. Kiara looked at Zac for a moment before running from Skylar’s side and throwing her arms around Zac’s neck. Zac staggered slightly but quickly regained his balanced, gently wrapping his arms around her.
He inwardly scowled but kept his face stoic. His eyes closed as he embraced her in his arms, cuddling her with all he could manage, “It’s gonna be okay.”
Dampness on his shirt, more than usual, followed that statement. He responded by gently rubbing Kiara’s back, “I won’t go anywhere. Whatever happens… but I think… I think we need to tell your family, at least.”
“My mom is gonna hate me,” Kiara whispered.
“Why?” Zac asked, not bothering to try to pull away so he could look her in the eye.
“I’m gonna screw up her campaign,” Kiara replied.
At that Zac did pull away from her, but only to cup Kiara’s cheek in his hand, “listen to me: your mom is one of the most open minded people I know. She’s firm, she knows where she stands… but she also accepts people for who they are and for what’s made them who they are. She won’t let the opposition bully her into submission over this. She said it best… there’s good and bad in every social group… this is a prime example of that. Yes, a mutant hurt you… and now you’ve got two mutants by your side, unwilling to let it repeat… and I’m sure your brother and your mom’s boyfriend will join in with us on that.”
Kiara bit her lip but numbly nodded.
Zac eyed Kiara for a minute before letting out a sigh, “You know that girl you always ask me about?”
Kiara nodded again.
“She knows about me liking a girl… she doesn’t realize she is that girl,” Zac began.
Kiara’s breathing paused for a moment, her eyes welling up with a fresh batch of tears.
Zac shyly shrugged and blushed as he added, “that girl’s you. This doesn’t change anything. I just… I thought… I thought I should say something.”
Kiara nodded again, her eyes downcast. She felt something brushing against her cheek and looked up. Her eyes met Zac’s, though his contact lenses she could see spots of dark electric blue coming through, while his thumb brushed against her tears.
“Let’s go home, huh? You don’t have to tell me right now,” Zac suggested.
Kiara nodded a bit, “tell you which?”
“Either one,” Zac replied, keeping an arm wrapped around Kiara’s shoulders as they headed out of the food court.
Sky followed them, happily downing a takeout bowl of chili.
“Zac?”
“hmm,” Zac replied, glancing at Kiara from the corner of his eye.
Kiara kept looking straight ahead while she asked, “If… if things don’t go well when I talk to my parents… can I stay in your room?”
Zac was momentarily grateful he hadn’t been drinking something at that moment, he surely would’ve choked and spat it out. He kept a calm demeanor as he answered, “of course.”

Elizabeth looked at the test from inside the washroom and blinked repeatedly, ‘no way… no…. it can’t be.’
Jason waited in the living room, sipping a cup of coffee while Nathaniel nursed a mug of hot chocolate.
“I don’t know, it seems unlikely,” Jason voiced.
Nate smiled a bit as he brought the rim of the mug up to his lips, “trust me. Signs are all there.”
Jason eyed Nathaniel as he set the mug down, “So umm… it isn’t really my business but … I know how Caleb came to be… we have my Dad to thank for that, but how’d Kiara come about?”
“You’re right, it isn’t your business. But since you’ve asked, Liz grew up an only child, and so did I… as much as I love Cal, I couldn’t stand the idea of him growing up without a sibling… at least a half sibling… but that wasn’t all there was to it. I love that boy like he was my own… but my parents found out that he isn’t my biological son. So they threatened to cut me off if I didn’t either divorce Elizabeth for ‘cheating’, or produce a child that is biologically mine. I love my daughter. Don’t get me wrong. I look at her every day and thank every star in the sky, every four leaf clover on the ground, every God in human history that she’s here. I never thought I’d have my own child though. I always knew I’d adopt, but reproduce? I didn’t think that would happen,” Nate admitted after he’d drank down some of the liquid chocolate. His steel eyes watching the marshmallows began to melt and bob within the cocoa.
The clicking of high heels on the marble floor brought both men to attention as they looked up from their drinks. Liz walked into the room, her greying red hair pulled up into a messy bun, and staring at the pregnancy test in her hands.
“Well?” Nate asked.
“It’s positive,” Liz whispered.
“I’m 39 years old… and I’m going back to the starting line,” she added with a mix of fear and excitement in her voice. Jason set his mug and pulled Liz onto his lap, cuddling her close to himself.
Nate smiled a bit, “Hey, least this time around the little surprise comes when you’ve got a career established, and a good income flow.”
Liz nodded in agreement as she nuzzled her face into Jason’s neck.
Nate placed a hand on Liz’s shoulder, “I might not be raising this little one… but if you two want a full day to yourselves, I don’t mind babysitting. You know they’d be safe with me.”
Liz nodded again with a smile, “I know, Nate.”
“Xavier offered me a position at the institute… helping with training drills and such…. It isn’t as much as you make but I think we could make it work if you went on maternity leave,” Jason offered.
Liz smiled and nodded, “I really want to this time. It’s probably going to be the last pregnancy I’ll get to experience.”
Jason smiled as he placed a hand on Elizabeth’s stomach. Caleb gave a slightly smug smirk. Nate caught sight of it and pointed at him, “You knew!”
“Of course I knew. I picked up on the new neuro patterns three days ago,” Caleb replied.
Liz and Jason looked over to Caleb, Elizabeth appeared as though her eyes were about to bug out of their sockets at any moment, “neuro patterns?”
“It’s twins. Since they have distinct neuro patterns and activity, I’d say you’re about eight weeks,” Caleb answered.
Elizabeth blinked again before responding, “no spoiling the surprise of their genders this time.”
This remark caused Nate to howl in laughter and shake his head.
Caleb shrugged, “I was two. What did ya want? Toddlers don’t keep secrets very well.”
