Anthony sat back in his chair, sprawled out straight against it more than truly sitting in it, scratching absently at his goatee. His feet on the floor, crossed at the ankles, held the desk far out in front of him. The arc reactor’s light blended with the similarly coloured glow from the screen he was studying in the dim room.
He was not able to sleep yet, which for him really was not so odd, though it was happening more often than usual. He would have thought he would be tired enough from being busy all day, finally having someone around to work with and make things that much more interesting, having the stimulation of another brain to bounce off of. Bruce’s company seemed to be part of the problem. He was enjoying having him there, more than anything really, but he was coming to feel worse about his involvement, little by little, as the days passed. He saw his friend, who so often -and so misleadingly- looked like he needed to be taken under-wing, having no place else to go, and no one else left to go to. He felt he was responsible, in many ways, for how everything had turned out. He saw Bruce forgiving him, more than he could have hoped for and more than he thought he deserved, though he seemed to fight with himself about it. The guilt this was dissolving into was depressing him more and more, but the more he slipped and let it show, the more Bruce fell into trying to cheer him up and keep him distracted.
He also realized that on some level, consciously or not, this was likely bothering Bruce too. If the things his alternate persona often said were any indication, Bruce often hated being so forgiving and the way people took advantage of him because of it. This worried him, in the part of his mind that was calculating and did not spare anyone’s feelings, even his own.
Looking over the days results, a few things had his attention. Oxytocin and Dopamine were the chemical backbone of the way humans socialized, formed bonds and attachments; and the basic mechanism for learning, through either reward or -in the case of addiction- negative reinforcement. They, predictably, showed the most promise so far. The vasopressin levels also had his attention. Normally this hormone regulated fluid in the body, but in men it was also responsible for the way they formed social bonds and interacted just as much as oxytocin was. It was as much an attachment hormone for men as oxytocin was for women, causing feelings of possessive attachment and normally responsible for territory guarding and what stood for a nurturing-protecting instinct in men. Bruce’s levels were a bit high, and had increased minutely through the run of the tests. High levels, for Bruce, would be beneficial, he thought. If he thought of people as belonging to him, especially as the hulk, he would be driven to be protective of them. The higher than normal readings might even have been the direct result of Bruce consciously cultivating his own protective instincts for exactly that reason.
He was about to chuckle to himself about Bruce being possessive as a friend, despite not often showing it, when he realized his own hypocrisy. Anthony himself was a very possessive friend, possibly even more so than he was as a lover, and he did not yet know what kind of father he would be. He often got offended at the things people tried to do to Bruce, and a few others, as if it was a personal attack against what he considered to be his. He felt like slapping a palm to his forehead, but instead slowly raised it to rough through his hair, and shook his head. It was late, and he needed to get some sleep.
