“The
problem is,” Jamie sighed, his neck sore from craning to look at the shadowy
form over the Institute, “this whole thing is just so surreal.”
“That’s the
only problem?” Rahne snorted, rubbing her eyes gently with the tips of her
fingers. “I can think of at least… fifty
more.” She inhaled slowly, striving to
calm the butterflies in her stomach, before opening her eyes to fix on
Emma. “What is she doing?”
“Glaring,”
Jamie said succinctly. “A lot.” He shifted his gaze briefly to Emma and
frowned. “And apparently talking to
herself.”
“Ah…” Rahne cleared her throat softly. “Don’t blame her.” She glanced upwards again and closed her
eyes. “Jamie… I know this isn’t your fault, even in the broadest sense, but
please… I’m begging you… don’t do another project in astronomy again.”
Jamie
laughed mirthlessly. “Not a problem.”
“Everyone
inside!” Logan barked. “Now!”
Jamie and
Rahne exchanged looks and sighed mutually.
Rahne reached out and took Jamie’s wrist in her fingers and pulled him
to the back of the group of students shuffling reluctantly after Storm into the
mansion. She glanced up and
blinked. Kurt and Kitty were standing on
the widow’s walk between the two older wings of the house. “Come with me,” Rahne whispered, leading
Jamie towards the house, glancing back over her shoulder to see Logan and
Banshee conferring with Professor Xavier, their backs to the students. “Shhh…” She pulled her boyfriend to the side, behind
the tall, albeit sparse, hawthorn next to the side door. “Don’t take this the wrong way but…” She pushed him hard, making him thud against
the side of the house. Two multiples
appeared, looking vaguely startled. “Send
at least one inside,” she hissed when all three Jamies
just stared at her.
Jamie, the
original one, nodded and his two multiples scurried into the house via the side
door, just as Storm appeared to check and make sure there were no more students
outside. Rahne and Jamie pressed against
the side of the house, each feeling exposed behind the bare branches of the
hawthorn. Rahne opened her mouth to
quiet her breathing but Jamie just held his breath, his face turning pink then
red as they waited for Storm to shut the door.
Finally, their mentor went inside and Jamie exhaled slowly,
painfully. “Damn it,” he gasped softly.
“Hush,”
Rahne replied, pointing to Logan. She mouthed ‘follow me,’ and began to lead
Jamie around the far side of the house, pressing against the bricks and moving
as silently and quickly as they could manage.
It seemed like miles but it was not really that far before they rounded
the corner, out of Logan’s direct
line of sight. She pointed to the old
oak who’s branches overhung the roof near Kitty’s bedroom window.
Jamie
followed the direction of her pointing finger, then let his gaze trail
upwards. “No,” he muttered. “No way.”
“Don’t be
such a girl,” she hissed. “Come on.” She released his wrist and hurried to the
tree, pausing for a moment before jumping and grabbing a low-hanging
branch. In short order, she had made it
to the thick branches reaching for the window and was moving sure-footedly
along the wide expanse.
Jamie
swallowed bile and rubbed his palm over his stomach, his fear of heights
kicking in full force as he watched Rahne pull herself nimbly onto the
roof. As she motioned for him
impatiently, he cautiously approached the tree and, closing his eyes, reached
for the branch.
Rahne
growled, a purely wolf-like sound, low in her throat as she watched Jamie
struggle with both his fear and the tree, hissing as the smaller, whip-like
branches lashed against his skin and left welts as he made his way noisily
towards her. He lacked her sense of
balance and it showed, his legs shaking as he edged closer. She lay down on her stomach and reached out
her hands. “Come on then,” she whispered
loudly. “Logan
can hear us! Hurry!”
Jamie
glared briefly, almost resenting her for making him feel so childish. He reached for the edge of the roof and,
taking a deep breath, pulled himself onto the slate surface. For just a moment, he felt as if he were
slipping but Rahne grabbed the back of his shirt and pulled him onto a more
level portion. “Thanks,” he gasped. “Now what the Hell are we doing up here?”
“Finding
out what they’re doing,” she murmured, gaining her footing and heading towards
the widow’s walk where Kurt and Kitty were crouched but visible.
Jamie
groaned, unwilling to be left alone on the roof but almost too scared to follow
Rahne. He got to his hands and knees,
his arms shaking, and crawled slowly after her, breathing deeply and evenly. _I am not going to freak out. I am not going
to throw up on the roof. I am not going
to… Okay, maybe I will freak out a little…
_ He paused, closing his eyes and
shaking, only to feel himself suddenly yanked in ten directions at once, then
resettled.
“Looked
like you needed some help,” Kurt said kindly, patting Jamie’s shoulder before
offering him a hand up.
They were
on the widow’s walk, Rahne and Kitty sitting
in half-lotus on the walkway itself, Kurt standing in his usual
semi-crouched position. Jamie nodded,
swallowing hard, and accepted the help up. “Thanks… I hate heights.”
“They’re
not so bad,” Kurt shrugged. “You want
freak out, try working without a net and your partner is a squirmy eight year
old girl who has to pee.”
“Okay,”
Kitty broke in. “Look, so far, no one’s
noticed we’re out here! We have a chance to see what’s going on before they can
lie to us about it!” She tugged Kurt to
sit down next to her, Jamie joining them cross-legged and hiding. “We just need to stay quiet and observant. Logan and Banshee are going to be trying to
intercept anyone who tries to get inside and the Professor just went to the
house… There’s been so sign of Lilandra and them coming out to see this
yet. Makes me wonder…”
Rahne
sighed. “Beam me up, Scotty, there’s no
intelligent life down here.”[1]
A bright
light flooded the grounds, as if someone had turned on a hundred
floodlights. It was pure white light,
blinding and cold. Kurt yelped out loud
in shock and Kitty screamed shrilly, the feeling of being pulled too strong to
fight. “Rahne,” Jamie ground out,
feeling as if the air were being crushed from his lungs, “think before you
speak!”
