Tabby,
please answer me. Professor Xavier
let out a long sigh as Tabby’s mind remained closed to him. It was psychic white noise, he thought. Her mind was neither blank nor full. She was simply nonexistent in psychic
terms. It was like trying to get a
reading off a stone. Refocusing his
energies, he found Beast.
Henry, what have you found?
She’s
in a deep sleep, came the response. Charles, we seem to have a
bit of a problem. Tabby cannot be
simultaneously with you and with me at the same time.
Professor
Xavier shielded himself so forcefully it was like a steel wall coming between
him and Beast. Tabby swayed slightly in
her seat before him, her eyes round with boredom. She looked like the Tabby he knew but her
mind was not the same. “Tabby,” he said
aloud.
She blinked and her eyes found him,
her lips parting as if she were about to yawn.
“Yeah?”
“When did you come to the
Institute?” he asked after the briefest pause.
The girl before him stared, her face becoming a mask of contempt. “To stay, that is.” Tentatively, he reached out a mental vine of
awareness, trying to feel for her psyche as she answered.
“You should know,” she shot back,
her voice normal as ever, her body coiling into the seat like the recalcitrant
teenager she was. Her arms folded over
her chest and her knees drawn up to her ribs, her heels digging into the fine
upholstery of the antique chair, she added, “Look, I know you think I’m all
fucked up in the head but I’m not. I’m
fine! I just had a little freak out
earlier and…” She trailed off as the door to the Professor study creaked
open. “What?” she snapped, her lips
curling into a sneer.
Remy raised a laconic brow. “Seem we found ourselves a prodigal child,”
he said to the Professor, ignoring Tabby completely. The Cajun stepped out of the way as Todd, his
arm looped behind Wanda’s back and a disgusted expression on his face, ushered
in the long-missed girl. “She was jus’ wandrin’ ‘round,” Remy said helpfully, glancing at Rogue
and Todd.
Rogue knew better than to lie to a
telepath. “I had an idea about how to
find out who’s planting the bombs and stuff but we sort of found Wanda on the
way to Saint Dymphna’s,” she said with a sigh in her
voice.
“All roads lead to the hospital,”
Professor Xavier murmured, rolling forward to meet Wanda halfway. “Todd, is that…”
“Puke?
Yeah,” Todd sighed, glancing down at his shirt and jeans. “She hurled up like six weeks worth of food
all over the car. She was like that
freaky ass kid in The Exorcist.” He shuddered theatrically. “Ain’t no way that
smell is ever getting outta that car.”
Professor Xavier had years of
experience hiding his feelings so he was able to say with a straight face, no trace of revulsion evident, “Go wash up. Put your clothing into the washer on their
own, without anyone else’s, and wash them thoroughly. If they are ruined, throw them away.” He nodded in dismissal to Todd, turning his
gaze to Wanda.
“We ain’t in trouble?” Todd asked
incredulously, earning a sharp jab of Rogue’s elbow to his ribs.
“Never ask,” Rogue said, rolling
her eyes heavenward. “It just makes it
worse.”
Todd nodded, shooting one final
glance at the Professor before bounding from the room, already pulling his
shirt over his head. Remy snorted in vague amusement, giving the silent Wanda a
pat on the arm before heading for the door himself. “I run into Kurt on de way up here an’ he say dat everyone gotta go on some patrols, eh?”
Professor Xavier nodded. “Find Storm. You’re assigned to her group now. She should be in the hangar, making the
vehicles ready.” As an afterthought, he
added, “Jubilee is with her, learning how to run a systems check on the jet.”
Rogue waited until Remy passed her
and was out in the hall before saying softly to the Professor, “I think
something happened to Wanda. She’s not…
I dunno. She’s not right.” She did not touch the other girl but she
swayed forward as if she wanted to put a comforting arm around her. “I’m sorry we snuck out, Professor.”
“You’re sorry you were caught,” he
corrected. “We’ll deal with that
later. Right now, this is definitely more
urgent.” He moved back so that Wanda
could see Tabby. No recognition lit the
blonde’s eyes, but Wanda’s face became a mask of hunger, sadness and rage.
“Why are you just sitting there?”
the Scarlet Witch asked, her voice shaking with some emotion so jumbled as to
not be named. “Why aren’t you looking
for Lucas?”
“Lucas,” Professor Xavier said when
Tabby did not reply, “has been found.”
“Liar,” Wanda spat. “All of you are liars! I saw you with them!”
Her voice was rising steadily, reaching shouting levels as she began to walk
towards the Professor. “I saw all three
of you, like fucking rats, like the goddamned monsters under the bed! I saw his
little room, his playthings! I saw you smiling at him!” Her voice was breaking, tears bubbling in her
throat. “I saw all of you!”
Rogue reacted on instinct as Wanda
lunged for the Professor. She moved
fast, grabbing Wanda’s outstretched arm and swinging her around, their combined
weight and lack of balance driving them both to the floor. Beast threw the door open as they rolled, struggling
for dominance. Rogue tried to keep her exposed face and neck out of Wanda’s
reach but it was too much to hope for. The moment Wanda’s bare hand connected with
Rogue’s throat, both young women screamed. Rogue’s voice rent the air with a
heartbreaking, guttural cry of pain, mingling with Wanda’s shriek of surprise
and dismay. Their bodies bowed and Rogue
shoved herself away from Wanda, the dark-haired girl remaining flat on her back
on the floor, gasping and twitching as if she had been electrocuted. Struggling to her feet, Rogue succeeded only
in falling against Beast, who carefully grabbed her by her gloved arms and
eased her to the floor.
“Charles,” Beast said, his voice
shaking in surprise and shock.
“I know, Henry. And Rogue now has our proof.”
