Readers/Reviewers: I’m going to
be gone for a few days again so I’m setting up two chapters to go out, one
Wednesday and one Friday. Or something like that. I’ll be back Saturday night so if all goes
well and I have some time, I’ll get a chapter out on Sunday. Wheeee.
Jean
pressed her fingers to her temples and exhaled slowly. “Ow.”
Emma smiled
faintly. “Give it a minute. It’s fading.”
She stared ahead at the blank wall, feeling the niggling, gnawing
feeling of the conflicting voices receding.
“I think,” Rogue said a bit loudly,
pitching her voice for Lilandra to hear, “we
need to have a Come to Jesus[1]
meeting. Now.”
Lilandra seemed still as a statue
for a long moment, her hand resting on Professor Xavier’s shoulder. “No,” she said finally. “You are not to be concerned with this.”
Rogue stood. “Like Hell…” She shook off Todd’s grasping hand and
stepped towards Lilandra. “Do you have
any idea how sick we are of being kept in the dark? Seems like every time we turn around, one of
y’all is lyin’ to us, trickin’
us… Hell, for all I know we’re not even
really mutants.”
“We have not lied to you,” Lilandra
began.
“She means adults. Rather, older
people…” Professor Xavier locked eyes
with Rogue. “We do not lie to you
because we enjoy it. Some things, you
are better not knowing until later, until they can be presented in such a way…”
“Such a way what? Such a way that we can deal with it? Until you can think of another lie?” She shook her head. “Bullshit.”
Her eyes scanned the room quickly and picked out Kitty. “Kitty’s sick of it too, aren’t you?” She did not wait for her friend to
answer. “She’s been lied to more than
me, Todd and Lance combined!”
Kitty threw up her hands, dislodging
Kurt’s tail from her wrist. “Leave me
out of this!” Paige’s words of a few
minutes before still stung her ego and her temper.
Lilandra turned cool eyes to Rogue
and frowned. “You are causing problems,
girl. Resume your seat. The power has returned. We will re-start the
simulation.”
“Hold up,” Logan’s
voice snapped through the room with obvious anger. “I just got my head busted—literally—by someone
claiming to be your brother. I’m prone
to believe him. Ain’t often we see
feathered freaks prancing through town.”
Lilandra’s
color rose. “Be silent!”
“Bite me,” he muttered. He strode into the room with Storm on his
heels. “Mark’s in the infirmary with
Beast. Looks like he busted his tailbone
and maybe a few fingers. He got thrown
but good into the concrete steps.” He
stopped just short of Lilandra. “On THIS
planet,” he said snidely, “that’s assault.”
“What is this crystal he mentioned?”
Storm broke in. “Tell us why you’re here
or I will be forced to remove you from our presence.” She was in high goddess ire at that moment
and it showed. She seemed to radiate an
electric aura, forcing Lilandra to step back.
The darker Shi’ar murmured
something low and soft to Lilandra and they seemed to share an unspoken
communication for a long moment. “D’ken,” Lilandra said finally, “is my brother. He is ruler of our home world and…”
“Quite insane,” the third of the
Shi’ar trio said blithely, walking through the open door of the Danger
Room. “Mark will be fine,” she
announced. “He’s got broken bits but he
says it does not hurt. He lies, I think,
to preserve face.”
Lilandra frowned. “D’ken is
misguided.”
“And insane. He is my brother too, Lilandra…”
Storm cut through the sibling
banter. “You’ve brought trouble to our
door and still we don’t know your purpose.
You have five minutes before I remove you from our presence.”
Professor Xavier seemed reticent to
act, which irked Logan no end. “Chuck, you gonna back us up here?” He felt the eyes of the students on them and
felt his skin crawl in burgeoning frustration.
“They are here because we can help
them,” Professor Xavier said finally. “They
found us through searching for us… we stand out on this world like a candle in
a coal mine. We are marked as different
and this difference drew Lilandra and her companions to us…”
“Wonderful,” Rogue snorted. “Fuck this.
I’m out of here.”
“Whoa, wait up!” Todd clambered to
his feet. “You can’t just blow this off!”
“Watch me,” she snapped. “If I wanted to be treated like this, I woulda stayed with the Brotherhood.”
Sean’s loud shout made them all
jump. “EVERYONE SHUT UP!” He narrowed his eyes and pointed at
Lilandra. “Being all mysterious might
work wherever the Hell you’re from but here, it just pisses us off. If you want us to help, and you want us to do
it willingly, tell us the whole truth.”
Lilandra and her sister exchanged
long, hard glares. “Fine,” Lilandra said
stiffly. “We are from a world we call
Aerie…”
“Skip ahead, sister…”[2]
Lilandra narrowed her eyes. “The crystal he referred to is a source of
great power. If used as he plans…” She
took a deep breath. “It could destroy
everything. Aerie, Earth… everything.”
Beast chose that moment to lead
Mark into the room. “Here you all are… Why is there powder all over the floor of the
hallway?”
“Powder?” Professor Xavier and
Storm looked up sharply.
Kitty groaned. “I told you,” she
sighed. “I’m not hallucinating.”
Mark, slightly groggy from recently
administered painkillers, swayed slightly on his feet. “The plot thickens, eh?”
Swallowing guiltily, Kitty rose to
her feet. “Professor, I had a visit last
night from Minerva… Um… Minerva the goddess.”
Professor Xavier blinked slowly,
counting to ten before speaking. “Well, when it rains around here, it pours it
seems. Kitty, my office. Lilandra, come with us. Everyone else, this session is over. Clean up
the Danger Room and…” He paused, searching for the best way to complete the
thought. School was out for break so he
could not order them to do school work. “Ah,
Logan will organize a patrol of the
grounds to search for signs of our uninvited guests.”
Kitty patted Kurt’s arm
regretfully. “I’ll be back in a bit,
baby,” she murmured. “Go rest…”
He nodded. “Ja… wake me up
when this is over…”
“You and me both, Elf,” Logan
muttered. “You and me both…”
A/N: Amara and Lance next, and
Tabby and Wanda.
