“You
could’ve told me, you know!”
“But then
I’d have missed the look of abject horror on your face when you saw all this,”
Rogue smirked, elbowing Scott in the ribs.
He rolled
his eyes as she retreated to join Todd by the refrigerator and turned to face
Kurt. “Everyone knew but me, I take
it?”
“I had no
idea,” Kurt swore, though he smirked.
“Kitty says she knew and Lance, and Rogue, and…well, I guess everyone
except us and Jono.” Jono had refused
to come out of the basement and no one quite knew why except Paige, who had
made a brief appearance at the start of the party then disappeared back into
the mansion. “Where’s Jean?”
“Being
glomped on by my own brother,” Scott said with mock irritation. “Hey, Alex!
Leggo my wife!”
Kurt
chuckled into his soda as Scott went to join Alex and Jean across the
patio. The party had been a surprise
arranged by Alex and the Greys in an effort to show they did not mind and were
even happy about the marriage between Scott and Jean. Surprise being the operative… A glance at the Professor showed that he seemed a little twitchy
himself over the events, that Jean’s parents were more supportive than he
was. “Everything okay, Professor?” Kurt
asked, sidling up to him and passing over a cup of ice water.
“Oddly,
yes…” the Professor contemplated his cup of water and said somewhat
distractedly, “Sometimes, we don’t always know best, do we?”
“Er…” Kurt could only assume he was using some
version of the royal we. “I guess not.”
“When are
you leaving tomorrow? Nine?”
“Eight,”
Kurt corrected. “I’ll be back before
school starts, though.”
“Have you
made your decision yet?”
“Nein,” he
sighed, watching the ice settle in his cup.I guI guess I need to soon.”
“If you wait too long, you won’t
have a choice. That holds true in many
parts of life.”
Kurt
frowned, not liking the maudlin turn the usually unflappable man was
taking. “Are you sure you’re okay, Herr
Professor?”
“Just fine,
Kurt,” he said, his smile strained. “I’m
a bit too long in the tooth for these festivities, though. Tell Scott I’d like to see him later to work
out the terms of his employment, would you?
I think I’ll retire to my suite…”
Kurt nodded
acquiescence and moved to join Kitty by the edge of the pool as the Professor
made his way to the house. “So you knew
about the party, huh?” he murmured in her ear, surprising her and making her
almost spill her drink on Jubilee, who was looking more morose than usual.
“No,” Kitty
said, glaring at him quickly for the start, “but it made Scott extra twitchy so
I figured that’s a good thing.”
“Evil
Liebes.” Kurt handed his remaining soda
to her and turned his attention briefly to Jubilee. “Are you sure you’re doing okay?”
“Yeah,
fantastic,” she sighed. “Remy’s taking
his test this evening. He’s supposed to
be back by eight and it’s almost that now…”
“He’ll do
fine,” Kitty assured her, though she reserved some doubts herself.
Jubilee nodded a bit glumly and
downed the rest of her drink in one gulp.
“At least they’re not here anymore.”
“INS?” Kurt asked idly, sliding his
arm around Kitty’s waist.
“Something like that…” Jubilee’s gaze slid away from Kurt’s as she
avoided elaboration. All but Lilly and
her aunt had been sent away. The
Professor had assured her that the women would not return to bother her, but
she could not be sure. He would not
tell her where they had been taken, but he did reassure her repeatedly that
they were in a “safe place.” Jubilee
could not help but remember just what other people who were supposed to be in
safe places had done to her and hers in the past, Magneto springing to mind
immediately. “Look, I’m no fun right
now…I’m gonna wait for Remy up at the house.
We’ll both come down when he gets here.”
Kitty opened her mouth to say
something comforting, but could not form a reasonable statement. Instead, she nodded and Jubilee went the way
of the Professor. After a relatively
st mot moment broken only by the sounds of scattered conversation and Evan’s
portable CD player, she nodded in the direction of Sam and Rahne. “Watch.”
“Kitty, don’t stare…”
“No, look at her…she won’t let him
touch her…follow the direction of her gaze.”
Kurt did as he was told and could
not suppress a smirk. “Jamie.”
“Yep.”
“Oooooh…she’s going over…”
“Okay, now I won’t look.” Kitty turned to face Kurt with the hint of a
smile playing at the corners of her mouth.
“I think she was just trying to make Jamie jealous.”
“What makes you think that?” He clasped his fingers together at the small
of Kitty’s back, leaning against the low wall behind him. “Intuition?”
“Jean,” Kitty giggled. “She told me.”
“She’s been peeking?”
“Nah…Rahne’s been crying.”
“Speak of the Devil…”
“Hey, you two,” Jean said, glancing
back over her shoulder towards where her parents were talking with Scott, who
himself looked only a little terrified.
“This is kind of weird, huh? My
parents being okay with this…I never would have thought they’d be alright with
me getting married so young.”
Kurt shrugged. “They love you, you’re happy, they know you’re
responsible… What’s not to be okay
about?”
“The fact I’m eighteen…” Jean
sighed. “Well, I’m just glad they didn’t
flip on me.”
“What’d they say when you told them?”
Kitty asked, turning so her back was against Kurt’s chest.
“That’s just it,” Jean said, her
expression bordering on amazed. “I didn’t
tell them. Scott did. He called them and everything…”
“Whoa,” Kurt said, his eyebrows
shooting up to somewhere in the vicinity of his hairline. “How’d that work out?”
She gestured towards the trio and
shrugged. “Well, see for yourself. I’m just really surprised at him
lately. First he’s all…jerky…then he’s
like this…”
Kitty suppressed the urge to laugh
at Jean’s abstractness and instead asked, “So he’s not twitchy about the whole
job-school thing anymore?”
“Well, he tried to apologize for
yelling at me and leave it at that, but I was kind of bitchy back to him and
long story short, he’s decided to stay here to finish school this coming year
and the Professor is giving him a job keeping up with all the Institute
vehicles so long as he finishes that course at the community college. Said it would free up Logan to teach some of
the self defense classes, but…” Jean
trailed off, all three of them knowing that was not the only reason the Professor
gave Scott the job. Jean’s mother
called to her and the red-head nodded to indicate she had heard. “I’ll catch up with you guys later, okay?”
“Sure,” Kurt said, waving at her
parents as she departed. “Well, seems
like things are coming back together…”
“Mostly,” Kitty allowed, her eyes
resting on Amara, leaning against Lance and looking very wan. “Mostly.”
Kurt followed the direction of her
gaze and sighed. “Well, some things are
going to take longer than others.”
Kurt, Kitty…there’s some people
here to see you.
They both jumped at the Professor’s
voice in their heads. “Are you
expecting anyone?” Kitty murmured.
“No…you?”
They’re waiting, the
Professor told them, his tone distinctly amused.
Exchanging uncomfortable looks, the
couple headed towards the house only to draw up short when Kitty groaned. “Oh, no…I know who it is.”
“Who?”
“Kurt, do you promise to love me no
matter what happens?”
He frowned. “Of course.”
“You mean it?”
“I love you forever, Kitty,” he
said seriously, pulling her close for a kiss.
“What’s the matter?”
“Come on,” she sighed. “Let’s go talk to my aunts.”
“You’re kidding, right?”
“You promised forever…you’re stuck
with all of us now…”
A/N First off, there’s one more bit
after this, a short epilogue. Then,
since I have been lax in it this story, the next story will have MORE
SMUT! Really! ProPhile will remind me if I let it lapse…
