Remy shifted uneasily, his hands curling into fists in his pockets. Jubilee had surprised him, no doubt about that, and he hated being caught off guard.
"Remy? Aren't you going to say something?"
He inhaled sharply, the hopeful glint in her bright blue eyes sending a sharp pang straight through his heart. "I don't know, cherie," he admitted after another few seconds of silence. "This is…surprising…"
Jubilee narrowed her gaze as she rocked back on her heels, puffing a soft sigh through her teeth. "You're not even listening to me, are you?" She shook her head, tossing her glossy strands imperiously. "I don't even know why I'm bothering!"
"I hear you," Remy rejoined tartly. "Mark is, in your words, off his rocker, neh?" He raised one eloquent shoulder. "'sbound to happen in this place, eventually." He offered a weak smirk. "That it, p'tite?" His stomach was quivering in a combination of apprehension and agitation: he wanted to talk to Jubilee, wanted to try one more time to mend fences, but at the same time he did not trust himself. He felt guilty, wrong… He knew he was involved in something shameful but could not quite pinpoint exactly what it was. Essex had assured him this was clean, no harm to any human or animal would be required. He forced his mind to the fore, though, as Jubilee's bright gaze became even more pointed, almost painful. "Chere, I know you an' Mark are close mais…"
"JUBILEE!" Kitty's strident tones rang out across the downstairs level of the institute. "JUBILATION LEE! WHERE ARE YOU?"
Jubilee raised a brow as if to say 'See? Told you so!' before turning away from Remy. "IN THE KITCHEN!"
Kurt appeared a moment before Kitty, his sulfurous entrance leaving Remy and Jubilee with slightly stinging eyes no matter how many times he did it around them. "There's a bit of a problem," he said, slightly out of breath. "Mark and Mystique…"
"…are tearing up the library!" Kitty finished, face flushed and words clipped with exertion from running all the way from the library at top speed. "Jean's trying to break it up but… gah!" She shook her head, ponytail bobbing furiously.
Remy blinked owlishly. "Mark and Mystique? Fighting? What… how… huh?"
"Yes, the usual way, and ditto," Kurt replied, outwardly calm to the casual observer. Kitty, however, knew better. He jumped only slightly as she absentmindedly grasped his hand in hers and squeezed. "Katzchen?"
"I couldn't hear everything," Kitty said hurriedly, her words losing some of their clarity as everything slurred together in her haste, "but Mystique said something like she had been waiting to kill him and then Mark was all like 'huh' and she was all, like, you know, calling him names…"
"Thank you, Miss Clarity," Jubilee sighed. "Where's Storm?" She was already moving at a half-trot towards the library. The sounds of fighting could not be heard so, to her judgment, it was just a minor scrap rather than a life or death situation.
"In the Infirmary," Kitty replied, pulling Kurt along with her as she strode to keep up with Jubilee. Shooting a glance at Remy, she asked, "You coming?"
A brief hesitation preceded his reply. "Oui," he smiled, breaking into a loose-limbed stride. "On my way."
Jubilee winced as she pushed open the library door. Books, formerly in stacks, were scattered across the floor like some sort of literary Jonestown.[1] Mark and Mystique were nowhere to be seen but the muffled sounds of struggle permeated the space. "Hello?"
Jean, bedraggled and a bit bruised, popped up from behind Mark's desk. "They're in his office. It's a standoff," she added, shoving a lock of hair from her eyes with the back of her hand. I'm keeping the desk between them but it's getting futile." She frowned and the sound of wood sliding on wood cut through the cursing and thumping.
"I'll get Scott," Kurt announced, vanishing with a brief, hard squeeze to Kitty's hand.
"Typical men," Kitty snorted. "Can't stand acting alone. Okay, they're fighting over…?"
"I don't know…" Jean winced as something large and heavy thudded against the office wall. "Hope that wasn't Mark."
"No, he makes more of a thumpsquish noise," Jubilee muttered abstractly. "Okay, cover me! I'm going in!" She strode forward resolutely, shoving her yellow jacked sleeves up past her elbows. Kitty called to her but was ignored as the gymnast pushed the half-open door all the way open. Dead silence fell, almost deafening in it's lack of sound. "Oh. My. God." Jubilee stepped out slowly, not turning around, shutting the door in her wake. "Um… gotta go now bye…" She hurried forward, only to run smack into Jean and Kitty's united front. "They're fine. They're done. Um… move. Now. Please."
Jean shook her head. "Jubes, what's going on? Are they okay in there?" She looked past her friend as if she could peer through the wood but all she saw was the door. The psychic shields of both mentors were up, blocking her effectively. "Are they…um…"
"They're fine," Jubilee nodded, her face red as a beet. "Just… move!"
Kitty frowned. "Remy, hold her still while I…" she paused and realized something belatedly. "Where's Remy? I thought he was right behind us…" She turned around fully, frowning as she hurried to the door leading out to the hall and peered down it as if she could discern Remy's whereabouts by sheer will. "I bet he took off on his own without telling us…"
"Thank you," Jean sighed, "Captain Obvious."
"THAT RAT BASTARD!" Jubilee's face drained from red to pale in a heartbeat. "I WILL FUCKING KILL HIM!"
