Chapter 5
In the bedroom Shelia is on her computer looking up anything she can find that references Loki. She is immediately overwhelmed with information about him. Maybe it's because she was so wrapped up in her own drama over the past couple of years, so isolated, she had only a vague recollection of the alien invasion that happened across the country. Being in the hospital for weeks and then in hiding until the sentencing, kept her in the dark about a lot of world events. She knows she should be frightened of him, of what he has done. She also knows this is what gets her in trouble, the bad guy that she wants to help. Just like Sean. She thought she could make him better, help him be a better man, and where did that get her? Absentmindedly she runs her hand across the scar on her lower belly remembering how wrong it all went as she continues to scan the information in front of her regarding Loki’s lineage and subsequent adoption.
The most up to date information states that Loki was captured and returned to Asgard for trial. During the trial it was discovered that he was under the influence of a spell that amplifies negative tendencies placed on him by Freyr, one of the Vanier. Freyr has been the subject of an exhaustive search once his involvement in Loki’s actions came to light. Once captured, he is to be brought before Odin to face judgment.
Loki’s brother and mother argued that Freyr’s spell meant he was not responsible for his actions and should be shown leniency. Which would explain why he was banished and not put to death for his crimes and why he was being given the chance to redeem himself.
She hears the shower turn off and quickly shuts down the computer. Still undecided on what to do she walks back into the living room and sits on the couch. Loki comes out of the bathroom dressed in his new clothes. The shirt is a little tight across his chest but other than that he looks good. He sits down on the opposite end of the couch and King moves to be by his feet. "So have you figured out what you're gonna do?" Shelia inquires casually.
"Not yet, but don't worry. I just need to gather up my things and I will be ready to go. I appreciate what you have done for me." Loki can tell by her demeanor that she must have found out about his past. His time is up. Now the only question is whether she will turn him in or not.
"Maybe you can stay for a couple of days while you figure something out," Shelia blurts out surprising them both.
"You know who I am right? What my crimes are?" Loki asks incredulously.
"Yes I do. I also know you were not yourself at the time," she says making her decision.
"The spell only amplified negative traits, didn't create them. I had all that in me," he counters not sure why he is trying to talk her out of helping him.
"True, but do you think you would have acted on it without being under the spell?" Shelia argues.
"Honestly, I don't really know," he admits quietly.
"Well you've been here just under 24 hours and haven't tried to overthrow the world yet, so I think we are safe for now," she laughs, feeling surprisingly at ease with this decision. "We'll need to figure out something for money for you. It'll be really hard to get a job without ID, but I can make a couple calls and see if anyone needs help and is willing to pay cash."
"Thank you Shelia. I am indebted to you," he says with a tip of his head again.
She can’t explain the fluttering in her stomach from his simple words so she quickly changes the subject. "How is your chest? All healed up?"
"Ribs are a little sore, but that's about it."
"If only I could heal up that fast," she says indicating her black eye. "Hate to show this out in public. Good thing I work from home.”
"I think it looks quite becoming," Loki jokes with her offering her a huge grin.
"God of mischief and lies, huh?" She teases him back, feeling at ease with him.
He smiles and looks down at his lap and in the silence Shelia is thinking to herself, "don't do this. He is not a stray puppy to take in. He is a dangerous criminal. Doesn't matter how handsome he is or how gorgeous his eyes are. You do not need to help him."
Out loud she says, "Loki, would you like lunch?"
"Yes, thank you."
"You're welcome to watch TV if you want. Or if you like to read I have some books in my room you can pick from."
"I will take a look at what you have, if that's ok," he says getting up from the couch.
"Of course, the book case is in the closet. Go ahead," she calls from the kitchen where she has started making lunch.
In the bedroom Loki looks around. The bed is medium size and not made. The rest of the room is tidy, but sparse just like the rest of the house. He notices she has no photos anywhere and has not mentioned any family or friends. That could just be because she doesn't know him, but he would still expect pictures. He opens the door to the closet and discovers it is a very large space. Almost as big as the bedroom itself. Along two walls are bookcases over flowing with books. Most of them he doesn't recognize and has no interest in based on the titles and covers, but there are a couple of shelves filled with leather bound books that appear to be quite old. Pulling one out he notices scorch marks on the cover. Curious he looks at several others and sees similar burn marks. Selecting one that looks interesting he walks back into the living room.
"Did you find one?" Shelia asks from the kitchen.
"Yes I did. Did you have a fire?" he asks holding up the book to show her the burn mark.
The smile that was on her face fades and she looks stricken. "Um sort of," she whispers then pauses, trying to stop the familiar feeling of panic that is rising within her.
"You don't have to tell me. It's ok," Loki quickly tells her seeing she is becoming distressed.
"It's fine. My ex husband did that. He tried to destroy everything I loved," she explains quietly, eyes brimming with unshed tears.
"I'm sorry for mentioning it. I can pick a different one if you like," he offers.
"You don't have to do that. Lunch is ready," she says changing the subject and sets two plates at the table."It's not much, just sandwiches."
"It's perfect. Especially when it's free," he says trying to lighten the mood again.
