Zac sat in science class, absent mindedly sketching a small picture at the top corner of his paper while he listened to the teacher drawl on about biology. He subconsciously held his tongue between his teeth within his mouth as his concentration on the drawing increased.
“Zachary Thompson,” the teacher’s voice rang through the classroom.
Zac jumped, biting his tongue in the process. The minor, but sudden injury made him yelp as he reflexively exclaimed, “Son of a bitch!”
There was a deathly silence in the class room before the other students erupted in laughter. The teacher however, gained a severe look to their face and pointed to the door, “out.”
Zac felt his cheeks heat up in a slight blush as he gathered his books and left the school room, heading towards the principal’s office. Fuck. The last day of his first week and he was being sent to the office. It was Junior High all over again.
He paused for a moment at a metallic taste within his mouth. Covering his mouth he made his way to the boy’s washroom, and ran to the sink as blood began flowing from his mouth.
“Geez, you alright dude?” A guy asked as he walked over from the urinals, still zipping himself up.
‘Oh for the love of God, do I look fucking ‘alright’ to you? Dumb ass,’ Zac thought to himself, rolling his eyes in response.
The guy watched Zac for a moment before heading out of the washroom, “Just stay here, I’ll get someone.” He called before leaving the washroom.
Zac slammed his fist into the edge of the sink while his mind mustered a single word mantra, ‘Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck! FUCK!’
He opened his mouth letting the blood drain into the sink.
‘Fuck. I fucking hope I didn’t swallow this shit or I’m gonna get sick. Just my fucking dumb luck that there was actually someone in here… Fuck my life,’ he inwardly cursed.
Kiara blinked wide eyed at Zac as he finished recounting his morning to her over lunch. She cleared her throat before replying, “Well… at least today can’t get much worse.”Zac nodded in agreement as he scooped up a forkful of macaroni, “Yeah.”
Kiara absent mindedly played with the leaves of spinach in her salad with her fork, “umm… do you wanna catch a movie after school?”
Zac stopped mid chew and eyed Kiara for a moment. This wasn’t the first time they’d be hanging out together outside of the mansion, or school for that matter. Why was she nervous?
“Sure. Got something in mind?” Zac asked in a casual tone.
Kiara nodded as she gathered some salad onto her fork, “Yeah umm…. There’s a movie called ‘Swollen Hearts’ playing.”
Zac paused again and made eye contact with her, “Sounds like a chick flick.”
Kiara’s face went a shade of red that made Zac believe she was about to sprout a stem. After a while he sighed, “Fine, I’ll go. But I wouldn’t do this for just anyone, ya know.”
Kiara silently nodded, ‘and there’s something else I can do while we’re at the mall… and with the movie ticket to use to excuse my lateness getting home… it hopefully won’t matter. I don’t think so though. I mean… I’ve never had a… so… I can’t be. Right? God I hope that’s the case.’
“Zac,” Kiara began.
“Hmm?” Zac asked asked, his mouth full of food.
Kiara watched him and waited until he’d swallowed before continuing, “do you think that… that girls that were forced into something they didn’t want to do are…. Broken?”
Zac stayed silent for a moment, processing the question before looking to Kiara, “They’d be no more broken than I am. It doesn’t matter how many times you break… or how badly. What matters is what you do with the pieces, and how well you put yourself back together. Being strong doesn’t mean you’re fine… we’re all gonna get broken one way or another at some point… a few points even, in our lives. Carrying on afterwards, having enough fight in you to get through to another morning… that’s what strength really is. I think girls that go through that stuff… they’re probably the strongest people on this planet. Every day’s a fight for them, and every night they lay their head down on a pillow to greet another sunrise, is another victory.”
Kiara blinked a moment before smiling a bit and nodding, “Yeah… yeah… that’s pretty true, I guess.”
Zac’s eyes stayed locked on Kiara’s face, “You alright?”
Kiara bit her lip a little before nodding, “Yeah.. I just… would it be okay if someone tagged along with us to the movie?”
Zac raised a brow but nodded, “Yeah. Not like it’s a date or anything.”
Kiara relaxed a bit more and began eating her salad more freely.
Zac eyed Kiara’s plate. A bed of spinach, arugula, and romaine, blanketed the flimsy paper. On top of the leafy greens was bits of tofu, feta, roasted almonds, walnuts, cranberries, boiled egg, tomatoes, cucumber, broccoli, and carrots. It was topped off with some kind of vinegarette dressing he wasn’t too sure of, it smelled like strawberries.
Kiara caught the direction of Zac’s gaze and chuckled a bit, “Wanna try some?”
“Uhh, sure but um…”
Kiara shook her head ‘no’, “too many carbs in what you’re eating for me to even dare trying some.”
Zac nodded with a slightly sheepish grin, “Yeah… sorry.”
“Next time,” Kiara suggested, as she offered a forkful of salad to him.
Zac nodded in agreement and leaned over, taking the offered food off of Kiara’s fork.
“What the fuck?! I didn’t know you swung that way,” a boy exclaimed as he walked over.
Kiara let out an audible groaned, “What are you talking about?”
“Check the she-he’s throat, Payton… that ain’t a dude. And you might as well have just kissed her,” The boy continued.
“First off, just cause my Adam’s apple didn’t develop as fast as yours, don’t mean a thing. Second, I’m sure discrimination is against school rules, and third your sister definitely thought I was a dude last night,” Zac shot back.
Kiara’s eyes widened a bit at the last bit, ‘he’s lying to egg him on…. Right? Right?!?’
She suddenly felt the air leave her lungs while her eyes stung. Everything within her vision blurred to red. ‘What’s happening to me?’ Kiara thought as she hurriedly gathered her items on the tray before standing and heading out of the cafeteria.
“What’d you say about my sister?” The guy asked.
“I said, I made her scream louder than any guy ever has. She’s the village bicycle, dude. Everyone’s had a ride,” Zac answered as he picked up his tray and followed Kiara.
“By the way… don’t bother followin’ us. I honestly couldn’t care less what you think of me, one thing I won’t tolerate, is someone shootin’ their mouth off about her,” Zac added.
“So you are a fuckin’ dyke,” The guy shouted to Zac.
“I fuck girls, yes… I fuck ‘em with a dick. If that makes me a dyke, you should look the mirror and use the word on yourself,” Zac responded before cleaning off his tray, placing it in the return pile and leaving the cafeteria.
‘She didn’t even throw away her left overs… she just bolted,’ he thought to himself as he took off after Kiara, towards the school roof.
+++++++++++++++++
Kiara exited the roof access stairwell, and let the door to the roof slam closed. She stood for a moment, resting her hands on her knees, panting a little, barely noticing the tears that streaked her face.
‘What goes on in his head? It’s like I don’t really know him at all,’ Kiara thought to herself as she gave in, letting her knees give out. She huddled against the stairwell entrance, staying clear of the door. Her knees hugged up to her chest while she buried her head in her crossed arms.
Kiara blinked as Zac fiddled with his cuff link, staring out the window while he gave in and let a confession slip out of his lips, “haven’t you figured it out yet, Kiara? I don’t care what happens to me, as long as you’re okay. It isn’t even throwing my life away because without you, I don’t have much of a life.”
Thirteen-year-old Kiara bit her lip a little, “How long has it been?”
“Fourteen months, one week and three days,” Zac replied.
The blue eyed girl with curly golden locks nodded slowly, shifting a little, “You miss it?”
“No…”
‘It was all a lie… wasn’t it? It was just lies so I’d let my guard down and he could get into my pants. He’s no better tha-‘ Kiara’s thoughts came to a halt as she felt someone’s hand gently running over her hair.
She launched forward, and instantly pinned a bewildered Zac beneath her. Her hands wrapped around his neck and began to squeeze.
“K-Ka-Kiara…. It’s me,” Zac informed her in a strangled gasp.
“Yeah right… just like in that ally,” Kiara growled at him.
“What ally?” Zac struggled out, his hands grasping her wrists, trying to pull her hands away.
“If you really are him… then tell me something only he’d know,” Kiara demanded, loosening her grip slightly so he could answer better.
“M-my birth name is Emily Janine Thompson. I was born at WakeMed, Raleigh, North Carolina. While the others decorated the school… we stayed in my room watching youtube videos,” Zac stated.
Kiara felt her body chill to ice and shivered as she let go of Zac’s neck and eased herself off of him.
Zac sat up and watched Kiara’s expression for a moment, ‘that’s what… no wonder…’
“I’m sorry… I… I wasn’t sure,” Kiara started before a new wave of tears took her.
Zac scooted over next to her, wrapping an arm around her, “Hey… it’s alright. I’m okay.”
Kiara buried her face into Zac’s shirt, not looking at him.
‘I don’t carry spare dress shirts with me,’ Zac thought to himself as he wrapped his arms around Kiara, cuddling her close.
“I’m sorry that I hurt you, It’s something I must live with everyday. And all the pain I put you through, I wish I could take that all away. And be the one who catches all your tears, that’s why I need you to hear, I’ve found a reason for me, to change who I used to be. A reason to start over new, and the reason is You…” Zac softly sang.
Kiara took a few steadying breaths before she pulled away enough to look up at Zac, her eyes widening when she saw he was crying as well. His right hand left her back and came around to her face, the thumb gently brushing against her cheek. The act removing the tear that was in the middle of its journey.
“I’m not perfect. I could never be… I make mistakes… I learn from them. I didn’t mean to hurt you, when I said those things… but I also wasn’t about to let him say those things about you either. I got so angry…. I just didn’t think,” Zac confessed.
He gave a sad chuckle, “And crying behind contacts has to be one of the most annoying sensations ever created.”
Kiara cracked a small smile at that before giggling a little.
“Hey Kiara,” Zac beckoned.
The girl with blonde ringlet girls glanced at the red haired boy. He simply smiled at her, “one year, nine months, three weeks, five days. I don’t regret it. I’m not gonna jump into anything.... oh and so you know... that salad's fuckin' delicious.”
Kiara bit her lip, everything rushing to her at once. She thought of how she felt about Zac, the time they’ve spent together, how they both always seemed to have fun even if they were doing completely different things in the same room… and then that night in the ally way. That guy who’d looked exactly like the boy before her, except with one key difference. Then her mind went to how she’d felt the past ten days, with her symptoms only increasing, yet no fever was present.
“I have a secret too,” Kiara admitted.
