Elizabeth and Jason’s laughter rang out across the open valley. They were at Alkalai Lake the day of the first high temperatures during the Spring. Both pre-teens were in the water, enjoying the nicer weather and goofing off. Jason laughed as he splashed Elizabeth again, this time however water got into her eyes and to her surprise it stung.
“Jay, stop,” Liz requested with a slight giggled.
Jason smirked as he splashed her again.
“Jason, stop,” Liz repeated, a bit more firmly as she squirmed and shifted out of the way. Upon moving however, she slipped on some of the pebbles in the lake bed and fell, going under water.
She blinked as she found she was quickly swept away by the current.
‘Ahh!!! Dad! Jay! Uncle Jimmy!’ Liz inwardly screamed as she struggled to regain her footing.
She could feel her chest tightening as the small amount of air she’d managed to grasp onto as she was pulled under converted to carbon dioxide.
Elizabeth swiped at the water with her arms, and kicked with her legs against the strong tides, fighting the hysteria that threatened to over whelm her.
‘It’s no use… It’s too strong for me! I’m gonna die!’ Liz thought to herself as her vision began to blacken.
She heard a large splash, and was vaguely aware of a strong arm that wrapped around her and began pulling her with it.
Then suddenly she felt the sun beating against her soaked hair, and the sound of the watery prison breaking filled her ears as her body instinctively drew in a deep breath.
James Howlett had his left arm hooked under Elizabeth’s, his hand cupping her right shoulder as he struggled against the Lake’s current to get to the water bank.
After a few moments Elizabeth saw him wince a little, and his arm seemed to become locked into position.
James gruffly asked, “Can ya pull yerself out, kid?”
Elizabeth groaned with fatigue in response, and then she felt someone pulling her from James’ embrace. She panicked for a moment before she caught the scent of aged spices.
“I’ve got you, Lizzie,” Jason soothed as he dragged her onto solid ground.
James then pulled himself from the water, and Elizabeth blinked at the sight of three foot-long bone claws that quickly retreated into James’ hand.
“Just what the heck did you kids think you were doin’? The Spring thaw makes this lake too dangerous for ya to play in without an adult around,” James scolded.
He scoffed, “Just think if I hadn’t been walkin’ by right then.”
Jason’s eyes widened before he nearly suffocated Elizabeth by throwing his arms around her in a vice like grip, hugging her as if his life would end if he let go.
Elizabeth gasped – partially from shock, and partially from desperation to breathe before regaining her senses and wrapping her arms around Jason, returning the embrace.
“I’m sorry,” Jason uttered.
Elizabeth blinked as she held Jason, unaware of the new dampness that fell onto her neck where he’d buried his face.
Liz’s hand gently came up to stroke Jason’s hair, in a calming gesture, “Jay-Jay…”
Elizabeth blinked herself awake and stared out of her bedroom window from the bed. The soft sound of Nate’s breathing filling her ears as her hand went to her swelling stomach, gently rubbing where the baby was kicking.
‘That dream again… the same dream I’ve been having for months now… ever since you were conceived, little one,’ Elizabeth thought, her eyes filling with tears.
‘Don’t cry Liz… don’t cry…’ she inwardly scolded, but it was no use as the hot tears stung her eyes and began their journey out of the tear ducts, sliding down the sides of her face and dampening her hair.
After a moment, a pained mournful sob escaped her throat and the soft slumbering breathing paused.
She felt Nathaniel roll over and embrace her, “That dream again.”
It wasn’t a question, he knew, but why voice it if he knew?
Elizabeth nodded, not trusting herself to speak.
Nate nuzzled Elizabeth’s cheek, and gently placed a chaste kiss on the wet skin of her cheek, “I know how much he means to you, Liz… and from all you’ve told me, I’d say it’s mutual. But you know, he isn’t just your past.”
He placed his hand on top of Liz’s hand on her stomach, “He’s still in your life, and now he’s part of mine too. I hope I can meet him one day, to thank him for this chance. I could thank Jason Stryker twenty times a day, every day, for the rest of my life it still wouldn’t be enough …. I’ll never be able to thank you enough, either.”
“Nate, stop,” Liz begged.
Nate sat up and positioned himself so he was hovering over Elizabeth, able to look at her in the eye, without the risk of falling onto her stomach.
Once their eyes met he asked her, “What’s wrong?”
“Don’t thank me. I’m being selfish involving you,” Elizabeth replied.
Nate blinked before repeating in a questioning tone, “’Selfish’? Perish that thought, Liz. I never thought I’d get to experience this, with anyone. I told you, I don’t care that this baby isn’t mine. I never thought I’d be rushing out at 2 am to get yakisoba and watermelon. I never thought I’d be in a La Maze class learning how to coach a mom-to-be through labour… and I definitely never thought I’d be going to a doctor’s appointment to look at an ultrasound and hear the heartbeat of someone yet to enter this world. This is amazing for me. I couldn’t be happier to go through this with you. I love kids, you know that, right? So it doesn’t matter to me.”
Elizabeth bit her lip, fresh tears filling her blue eyes.
Nate’s expression softened as he lowered himself carefully and hugged her, “but I know you wish I was him. There’s no shame in that. There’s no need to feel guilty. He’s the one you’re in love with, and the father. I’m sure if he had the chance, he would be there, for everything.”
“Yeah,” Liz managed to choke out before she began crying again, her tears wasted no time in saturating Nate’s pajama shirt.
Nate gently played with Elizabeth’s hair when she began to return his embrace, “Just let it out, Liz. I’m here.”
“I don’t know what we’d do if it wasn’t for you. I mean… waitressing didn’t make enough to pay for everything alone… I couldn’t have gotten an apartment without help… and I can’t begin to compare to you as a bargain hunter.”
Nathaniel softly chuckled, “Are you kidding me? I don’t know anyone else who could’ve survived as much as you’ve gone through before turning 25. You’re strong, Liz. You’re the strongest woman I know. I love you for it.”
He loves her, part of her knew that already. It wasn’t a romantic love like the kind she felt for Jason, it was a deep admiration. While he wasn’t sexually attracted to her, he did find her esthetically pleasing. It wasn’t enough though. It wasn’t Jason… but did Jason really think of her that way?
“Liz,” Nate called to her.
Elizabeth took a shaky breath before answering, “yeah?”
“Is that all that’s upsetting you?”
The question was asked as he pulled away from the hug.
Elizabeth wet her lips, “Just… something else is bugging me. The extra hormones are making it worse… but it’s not something you can help with.”
Nathaniel quirked a brow at the response, “I’m sorry? I ‘can’t help’, or you don’t want my help?”
Elizabeth rolled her eyes, “Come off it, Nate. You don’t think of me that way. You don’t even swing that way.”
Nathaniel’s face relaxed a bit as realization of what she was hinting at dawned on him, “Liz…”
Her breath hitched as he ran his hand along the outside of her thigh, “If it’s bugging you that bad, I could help. Yes, it’s true that I prefer men… but at the end of the day, I’m still a guy. I’m a guy who volunteered to go through this with you, whatever that entails. Besides, you’re not the only one whose been abstaining the past seven months. I’d be lying if I tried to say I’m not craving that kind of release, that kind of touch too.”
“But with a guy,” Elizabeth added.
Nate blushed so brightly Elizabeth could’ve sworn for a moment that his face would put Rudolph’s nose to shame.
“If I’m honest… I’ve never done more with a guy than make out… I just haven’t had the courage. I’m not a virgin… you know it. But… I’ve only gone home base with girls…a girl,” Nate admitted.
Elizabeth blinked as he rubbed a thumb against her cheek, while he added, “that girl’s you, Elizabeth Stoner. The closest I’ve ever been to being in love with a girl is you.”
“Nate…” Elizabeth whispered, her mind was ceasing to function.
She shook her head ‘no’, “It wouldn’t be right.”
Nate nodded, “Alright.”
He resumed his spot next to her and Elizabeth blinked when she felt him cuddling into her back.
“Uh, Nate-“ Liz began before stopping, she wasn’t sure how to address it.
Nate’s voice was gentle as he replied, “I don’t blame you for turning it down, fact is you’re still upset… can’t hide that from me. So, I’m doing the only thing I know to comfort you.”
“I know but um..” Liz began.
Nate chuckled, “Really Liz? I’m a guy… and I was asleep. I don’t mean anythin’ by it.”
Elizabeth nodded, “Okay.”
She bit her lip a little, “I guess that must suck sometimes huh? The little soldier deciding to salute when you don’t want it to.”
Nate chuckled quietly, before nodding in agreement as he nuzzled Elizabeth’s neck, and rubbed her stomach, “It can be pretty awkward sometimes. Depending on how hard a guy gets… and how big he is it can sometimes even be a bit awkward to walk with one.”
Elizabeth blinked, “oh.”
Nate placed another chaste kiss on Elizabeth’s cheek, “Don’t trouble yourself with it though. It’s my problem, not yours.”
Elizabeth slowly nodded.
Nathaniel smiled, nodding a little, “If you do have a boy, I’ll make sure when the time’s right he learns of a few tricks to hide it during a bad situation.”
Elizabeth relaxed a bit at the reassurance but a realization hit her as if she’d ran into a brick wall, “you’d really do anything for us, wouldn’t you? You’d even have sex with me.”
Nate laughed at the last part, “I’ve slept with you before, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. And it’s part of the reason why this cover up works so well. It is in theory, far as anyone else needs to know, possible that I am the father. I mean really it’s not just an expression of love, sometimes it’s just the primal need to get your rocks off with someone else’s touch.”
Elizabeth nodded a bit, ‘soulless sex… it’s pretty common these days.’
“Liz…”
“Hmm?”
“Were you in love with me when we…”
Elizabeth nearly froze at the unfinished question. Her mind began to race while her heart thudded against her chest.
“I wasn’t. I mean, I thought I was… but I realize now I wasn’t. I’ve only loved Jason, this whole time. I just can’t imagine loving anyone else. I think I was trying to convince myself that time that I could move past him,” Liz admitted.
Nate nodded slowly, “So we were both kind of lying to ourselves…and each other.”
“Yeah… I guess we were,” Liz replied.
There was a silence that seemed to last an eternity before both parties uttered in unison, “I’m sorry.”
The pair both blinked before they began to heartily chuckle at the situation, each silently realizing that there was nothing to apologize for. They were as any other in their late teens and early adulthood, discovering who they were.
“This little one’s gonna need a name soon,” Nate suggested, as a means of changing the topic. The baby was always an easy go to.
Elizabeth nodded, “I know. If it’s a girl I want to name her Kiara Rose Payton.”
Nate smiled broadly, “I love Kiara.”
“And for a boy…. I kind of want to name him after both you and Jason… but no matter how I arrange the names he’d technically be a ‘junior’…. I don’t like the idea of that,” Elizabeth admitted.
“So give him our names as two middle names, and give him his own first name,” Nate offered.
“I don’t know any other names that I like… other than James and Logan… but then he could get mixed up with Uncle Jimmy when he’s around,” Liz replied, sounding a bit defeated.
“How about Caleb?”
Elizabeth thought for a moment, “Caleb Jason Nathaniel Payton… hmmm…”
