That morning was a strange affair. The breakfast meal was not the same without Logan, Peter, Ororo and Jean. Xavier told her they left early on their mission, which was very important and they would be back soon.
“But they are not the only ones up to something important today,” Xavier segued into something else. “Tonight we are hosting a very important private party. Like the council this is absolute secrecy, so I can’t have the hired help there. I need someone I can trust.”“You can trust me,” Kitty said as she played with the ring of her collar.“Excellent.” Xavier responded. “I will have a tailor take your measurements. You’re going to have to play the part of the maid, but there are no other options.”“I’m happy to be of service, my King.”“Katherine,” Xavier chuckled. “We’re not in council. You do not have to be so formal.”Kitty nodded while she played with the silver ring. “I know, my King. But after our talk of bushido last night I have been thinking about the samurai. They never had days off. There were what they were, every moment of every day. I will need the same mindset if I am to succeed.”Xavier glowed. “You set an example for us all, Katherine.”“If it pleases you,” Kitty added with a smile, “my King.”Kitty’s day went faster than normal. The X-Men had not returned yet so there would be no combat training this afternoon. Kitty did go to the room Sir Logan had set up as a dojo, she did change into her gi and practice her katas. Just because her sensei was not there was no reason to take the afternoon off completely. Besides, the night before she had been complimented on her body, something she’d never experienced in her life. Of all the ups and downs she’d been through since swearing herself to the Hellfire club, those compliments were definitely a high point. And knowing what she knew now, she wanted to look good naked.Once her exercises were over she went to the library, found a book on bushido, and commenced her independent study. Kitty steeled her resolve. The Black Queen was playing some sort of humiliation game with her. She would need to know what she was tested on. As she was already awarded the regalia for courage, honesty and courtesy; Kitty wanted to study the other tenets of compassion, duty, honor, sincerity, as much as she could. Perhaps she might even be able to anticipate the tests if she knew enough. When she returned to her room that evening, a French maid uniform was laid out on her bed. It was more fetish than formal, but what could she complain about? Everything was actually covered, which was more than the outfit of which she was proudest.Getting dressed she had to ask for help. Hair, make-up and a complicated series of straps and buckles required instruction. Luckily the staff was more than willing to help.A little time later and Xavier gave her instructions for the night. First as each guest arrived she escorted them to the study behind the council chamber, a place they came to call the “War Room”. Because of the secretive nature of this meeting none of them arrived simultaneous. Kitty knew she was in for it as she recognized a few of these men from newspapers, magazines and the evening news.
They sat around the table where the Inner Circle had their strategy session the night before. She lit a fire in the massive stone fireplace and served them whatever beverages they wanted. She recognized Dr. Reed Richards, the leader of the Fantastic Four and one of the foremost scientific minds in the world. In the business suit sitting next to him was Tony Stark, noted industrialist and (supposedly) Iron Man of the Avengers. The rest however were a strange mix she was unfamiliar with. The one was a tall, muscular man with short black hair looked like the Sub-Mariner, but wasn’t he a villain? The raven haired gentleman in the strange robes looked stern, but was polite and well mannered. The fifth was a total enigma; a silent stranger in the tightest black leather costume she’d ever seen. It almost seemed like it was his skin, the metal wings under his arms like a flying squirrel.“Thank you all for coming,” Xavier started as he wheeled to the end of the table, “I hope you find the venue comfortable.”Tony Stark loosened his tie. “I’m actually a member Charles, though I’ve never been in this section of the mansion before.”“I have no fond memories of this place,” the shirtless man folded his arms over his expansive chest, “or its former owners; what happened to them Xavier?”The Professor motioned for silence, “In good time.”Richards fiddled with the knobs on a handheld device. “Is this location secure?”“It is.” Xavier assured, “I’ve enhanced this particular room with technology similar to the Z’Nox chamber I built below my ancestral home. It’s psi-shielded, soundproof and electronic transmissions are locked once the door is closed. As for the mansion itself, it is one of the best kept secrets in New York.”“It’s true, Reed.” Stark agreed, “Sebastian Shaw knew exactly which palms to grease to get a blind eye turned. Even satellite surveillance sees a public park where the house stands.”“And what of the former occupants?” the shirtless man insisted.“Very well, Namor. I will begin at the beginning. As some of you may know the X-Men nearly died in a shuttle accident a while back. One of my students, Jean Grey, used her telepathy to pilot the shuttle to a crash landing in the Hudson River. We thought she was gone. But like the mythical phoenix she arose from the water, forever changed. She was much more powerful than before, and getting more powerful by the day. Currently Jean Grey is the most powerful mutant on record. As far as I can tell, her telepathy and telekinesis are approaching planetary scale.”“Ergo,” Dr. Richards concluded, “the need for the meeting, the location, and the Z’Nox technology.”Namor pressed in. “So is she the one you were afraid of Xavier? The mutant so powerful they tip the scales and force Magneto’s race war?”“Jean Grey is under control.” Xavier said in no uncertain terms, “At great personal sacrifice and with my assistance she is in control.”“Rather defensive don’t you think, Charles?” The erudite man in the weird robes said, “Who are you trying to convince? You summon us to a secret meeting while she is away and in the last room her powers could penetrate.”Xavier nodded. “You don’t understand the scale of what has occurred, Stephen. A few months ago I detected an emergent mutant in Chicago. I accompanied the X-Men to investigate and we were ambushed by agents of the Hellfire Club.”“This Hellfire Club?” Stark raised an eyebrow.“The same,” Charles sipped his whiskey. “The trail led back to New York, so we investigated here. As it turns out, the X-Men’s old enemy, Mastermind, was using his illusion power to gain a subtle influence over Jean. By convincing her she was time-shifting into a body of an ancestor who was a member of the Hellfire Club, she was deceived into believing that she belonged to them, sworn as their Black Queen-“Tony Stark’s hand shot up, “What happened to the last queen, the white one, Emma Frost?”Xavier raised an eyebrow in return. “She assaulted us in Chicago. Jean left her comatose after a psychic duel. Why do you ask, Tony?”Stark put his hand down. “Um… we had a thing. When we were both in town and neither was in a relationship we would…”Namor smiled. “Would you? I know Ms. Frost as well. I find surface blondes to be so…” both Stark and Richards glared at him, “…amorous? Perhaps that’s the best word.”“If I may,” Xavier chimed in. “Jean fell under the Hellfire Club’s sway and the X-Men were captured. Cyclops tried to exploit a telepathic bond he shared with Jean, but was slain by Mastermind.”Xavier became grave. “Scott’s death caused her to snap. She threw off the bonds Mastermind put on her and she became like death herself. Wyngarde, Shaw, Pierce, the rest of those she blamed were literally unmade before our eyes. I wasn’t even present, back in Westchester, but the tremors she sent through the astral plane were horrendous.”Stephen nodded. “I felt this ‘mindquake’ as well. By the time I invoked the Eye of Agamotto to learn the source the threat was over.”“Yes,” Xavier said, “this sort of battle moves at the speed of thought. You should have seen it Stephen, the astral plane itself was twisted around her. She was glorious, power like I’d never imagined. My X-Men tried to subdue her physically and I mentally, but she could repel both as if we were nothing. Worse, by dividing her attention she started to tear the astral plane down and the physical universe with it.”“So how…”“Her defense was phenomenal. She was pure id; unadulterated passion, want without consequence. She was a bright star, encased in mile-thick diamond shell. Try as I might I could not force myself through. As my X-Men lay at her feet, Wolverine the last fighting against her, I found myself not the only one attempting to breach her defenses. My oldest nemesis, Amahl Farouk, was against her as well. Since our first fatal encounter he’d become a being of pure psionic energy. Her threat to the astral plane was a threat to his existence. I know I made a bargain with the devil himself, but the universe was at stake. We pooled our forces and attacked.”All were silent. Kitty barely breathed.“Together we pierced her defenses, but she had grown so powerful she’d barely noticed our intrusion. Our hubris was our saving grace. The diamond sphere was an egg, she was a blazing phoenix ready to be born and burn the world in her labor pains. The breach we made was not a hole in a wall but a crack in that egg!” Xavier drank his drink, he was sweating. “We were so far below her notice, two of the most powerful telepaths the Earth has even seen. Luckily we were crafty. We unlocked her memories, not the trauma, but the times she was happiest, confident, most in control. It didn’t matter what it was, all creation was at stake… we took that memory, amplified it, and pushed it to the front of her consciousness…”The five other men around the table looked questioningly at each other. Worry flashed across noble features. Namor was the first to speak, “What did you do Xavier? Tell us!”Professor Charles Francis Xavier looked up with tears in his eyes. “I did the only thing I could. I put the Black Queen in charge. The time she was happiest, the most confident, the most in control... it was not her childhood nor as my student; it was when she was a willingly bonded slave to lustful men! I could scarce believe, but there was no other option. Together, Farouk and I, we chained the Phoenix in her own lust. I fear that Jean Grey’s soul may have been lost in the battle, as well as my own.”Dr. Strange placed his face in his hands. Richards continued to fiddle with his doodad. Namor slammed his fist on the table, “Imperious Rex! Dumb it down for the non-psychics, mutant!”Xavier grew angry. “There were three personalities in there; Jean Grey, the student who was like a daughter to me, the Phoenix, unadulterated power and passion, and the Black Queen, the only personality strong enough to keep the Phoenix in check. Jean handed herself over to her most secret desires, darkest passions and repressed urges; all because I did not give her the discipline to conquer herself when she was my student.”Strange steepled his fingers, took a deep breath and looked to the Professor. “So what should we do?”“Nothing,” Charles whispered. “She is in control of herself. I will support her in all ways that I can, but she is a changed woman. She has her own plans and we will work this out on our own.”Tony Stark leaned in. “Charles, you’re asking us to trust you and you’ve just confessed to handing a nuclear arsenal over to a sexual sadist.”“I’m asking you to trust my judgment.” Xavier’s response was sharp. He pointed to Black Bolt. “You cannot criticize anyone else who struggles to maintain control.” His finger went to Namor. “She’s never attacked the human race, can you say the same?”As the finger of accusation came to Tony Stark he threw up his hands. “Everyone knows I’ve lost control before. It’ll haunt me till the day I die, and I deserve that. Maybe this girl doesn’t.”Dr. Richards looked up from his handheld computer, “So why the meeting?”Xavier tossed each of the five a computer disk. “On these files, should they ever become necessary, are the ways of taking out each of the X-Men, including myself. I trust that they will never fall into government hands.”Namor tossed it back. “Please Xavier, you ask us to trust you to maintain control, to trust your student who has lost it before, and you hand us your death warrant “just in case”. Where are you coming from Xavier? I once thought we had an understanding.”Dr. Richards folded the computer into a wallet-sized box and placed it in his pocket. “Charles, what happened to this Amahl Farouk?”Everyone froze, everyone accept Kitty Pryde. It was 10 seconds before she realized that this wasn’t a pause, that she was the only one who could move. She walked around the table, staring at each of these men as they froze like the waxworks at Madame Tusaude's.Finally, Charles Xavier leaned forward, pushed off his armrests and stood. The wheelchair gently rolled away behind him until it hit the wall and came to a stop. “Allow me to explain this without being interrupted. For all intents and purposes, Amahl Farouk was destroyed by the Phoenix. The Phoenix is under control. From now on, the X-Men will be more pro-active in mutant affairs. Stay out of our way. If the unthinkable happens you have my protocols and my blessing to do what you must. This does not change the purpose or our dedication to these meetings. But the Phoenix, the Hellfire Club, and the betterment of the mutant race are the X-Men's domain.”The assembled heroes were still frozen, except one. On his forehead was a metallic antenna that crackled with power. The man called Black Bolt, the king of the Inhumans, whose every waking moment was an act of willpower, stood. He was silent, stoic. His face was an accusation and his eyes a promise.Xavier nodded. “I know. You have your own child of power to deal with. Let me deal with mine.”Black Bolt turned and left the room.A moment later and the rest around the table groggily began to move. Dr. Strange was the first to recover. “Charles? Were you just in my mind?”“Regrettably,” Xavier dismissed it with a wave. “There was no way I could finish this with continued outbursts. All the information is in your minds. I will call if I need you. If you need me or my X-Men, feel free to call.”Namor cursed and stormed out; Richards, Stark and Strange took a bit longer. There was really nothing left to say so there was no reason to linger. As the last filed out, Kitty cleared the glasses from the table. “What just happened?”Xavier straightened his suit and shook the wrinkles from his pants. “If they knew how powerful Jean was, they would destroy her. If it wasn’t the Avengers or the Fantastic Four it would be Atlantis or the Inhumans, or possibly the Sorcerer Supreme himself. They would destroy her just as the ignorant would seek to destroy us. I had no choice.”Kitty began to wash the glasses. “I don’t understand.”“Neither did they, Katherine.” Xavier winked at her. “That was the whole point of getting them here, in the one room in New York where no one would be able to know I altered their thinking.”A glass slipped from her wet hand and shattered on the floor. Kitty looked over her shoulder at him. “You altered their thinking?”Unsteadily, Xavier walked behind the bar, stooped down and began to pick up the pieces of broken glass and place them in a bar towel. “If they killed Jean, who would be next? The next most powerful mutant; Magneto? Storm? Dr. Richards’ own son? No Katherine, their line of thinking would start out with the best intentions and end up with the worst outcome. If I could convince them with words I would, but they were not willing to listen. So I changed their minds, to save them from themselves.”Kitty understood. Charles Xavier was doing the best he could and she knew how terrifying Jean could be firsthand.“If that was the plan,” Kitty questioned, “Why have me here?”Charles shook out the broken glass into the garbage. “In case I go too far. One of the reasons I need you so much Katherine is because of your unique powers. Your mind is slippery, resistant to control. When you are phased I can’t tell you are there telepathically. If I went too far, if I was in the wrong, no matter how powerful the rest of them were you were the only one with a chance to stop me.”Kitty swallowed. “I’m here to kill you?”“Only if there is need. I know Farouk was not completely destroyed by the Phoenix. By combining ourselves as we did, a little piece of him will always be with me. Things like that can be a seed of evil, growing in the darkest places of the soul.”When the war room was clean they left. Kitty pushed the wheelchair alongside Xavier as he walked to his chambers.“I didn’t know you could walk.”Xavier took off his jacket and tossed it over his shoulder. “Jean has been helping me. She is that powerful now. Telekinetically she can feel the severed nerves. She gets the medical knowledge from the finest specialists in the world and slowly has been rebuilding my spine. I’ve regained the feeling in my legs a week or so ago. I’ve been able to move them a little more each day. Soon I will be back to my old self.”They reached his door. Xavier opened it and Kitty pushed the empty chair inside.“I never want to go back to being my old self.” Kitty confessed. “At first I was unsure, scared, but in the last few months I’ve discovered more about myself than I had in all the years previous. I feel alive for the first time in my life. I have you to thank for that, my King.”Her eyes went to Charles as he sat on his bed. Kitty reached behind her back to find the zipper to her maid outfit. Instead she found a buckle, tried to fumble with the clasp and gave up. Between the corset, blouse, skirts and girdle she completely gave up. Instead she went intangible and the maid costume fell to the floor.“Excellent,” Charles smiled, “you phased out of your clothes but kept your collar on. Selective phasing is quite a feat. Did you realize you were doing it?”Kitty’s hand went to her neck and sure enough it was there, the tight black leather strap and the silver ring. Kitty smiled, “I guess it's part of me now. I’m not ashamed.”“Obviously.”“No,” Kitty shook her head. “I’m not ashamed. I pledged myself to the Hellfire Club. I trust you and you trust me. I trust the Black Queen, even when she seems like she wants to hurt me. I’m not ashamed to be your Pawn. I’m proud of it, my King.”Kitty stepped forward, cupped Charles face in her hands and kissed him. The older man didn’t know how to react; his young charge had taken him by surprise. He expected her to toss the garment away, perhaps declare herself more comfortable naked, or rail about being dress up like a human servant, but instead she advanced on him in a way unexpected. Despite his body urging him otherwise, Charles Xavier resisted.Kitty finally broke off the kiss. “I have never been with a man, my King. Will you teach me?”“Not like this.”Kitty bit her lip. “I’m sorry. I forgot my place.” She knelt on the floor and took one of his hands in both of hers, staring up at him adoringly. “Will you please teach me to love a man, my King?”“No,” Xavier lifted her by the chin. “Not like this. You are very young and very lovely. If I was a weaker man there would be no question, but I am not. When you've finish your training, when you are awarded your full regalia, if you still want to we will; but not now, Kitty.” Xavier sighed, “Besides, I’ve just regain the use of my legs. The muscles are weak. I’m sure I would disappoint you.”Kitty laughed at the unexpected admission. She was being rejected, and that hurt, but it was not so bad. His promise was enough for now.Instead they hugged. Kitty wrapped her arms around his waist and he cradled her head. It was a special moment for the two of them, teacher and student in the darkest depths of the flickering shadows cast by the fire.
