Chapter 5
-----
As she pulled the van into the parking lot, the sign overhead reminded Jubilee of an audience participation line from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. "Check in, check out, Motel 6, we'll leave the light on for you but we won't change the sheets!", she thought as she chuckled and mumbled it to herself. Of course, in their situation Motel 6 was a class joint, and a particular indulgence. They could have selected any number of tiny, low-end motels in the area of town they'd been in, but Jubilee wanted something better just this once. The thought of a room she could be sure would be clean and in good repair was a luxury, and she could easily forsee a lot of nights in the cheapest fleapits imaginable, and that only when they could afford to not sleep in the van.
As expected, the girl slept through the check-in process, and was still in nap land when Jubilee pulled up in front of the room. Jubilee was about to reach over and shake her awake, but a flash in her mind of those blades made her think better of it and she instead sat back and spoke.
"Umm girl... terminator chick... whatever... wake up."
Oh, yeah, this was great. She was checking into a motel room with a girl she didn't even know a name for. If she even had one. Mom would so very much approve. At least the girl responded, and opened her eyes lazily to look at her. They could sort out the naming business later.
"Umm, we're here."
"Where's here?"
"Motel room."
"...........?"
"A place to sleep. Come on."
That got the girl moving, and soon enough they were settling in. Or at least Jubilee was, the girl was doing her own thing. Which at the moment seemed to be checking out every nook and cranny of the room, pacing it like an animal casing their territory. It reminded Jubilee of one time, before everything went to hell, that her parents had gotten her a kitten. That little furball hadn't been happy until she had explored the entire house, learning all of it. It seemed so very much like what the girl was doing now.
It wasn't the first time the girl's mannerisms had seemed more like a predator, like a cat or something, rather than a machine. Whatever precisely she was, Jubilee highly doubted she was built like a movie-style Terminator, all robot with an outer flesh covering. She slept and ate, for one, and she had definitely displayed some human emotions. Those blades were metal, though, and came from inside her arm, which meant she was some kind of cyborg for sure. Of course Jubilee had seen more than enough sci-fi to know that there was more than one way to set up a cyborg. Figuring out how and by whom was something Jubilee's curiosity would not allow to go unaddressed indefinitely.
For now though her musings were cut short by the girl calling for her from the bathroom.
-----
A few awkward minutes later, Jubilee was sitting on the bed flipping through channels for something to watch. As luck would have it, the movie channel had the original Terminator, and it would be starting right about in time for the pizza to arrive. With the sequel making like a billion dollars in the theaters, it wasn't surprising that the original would be on TV a lot. It'd been a while since she'd seen it, and she kinda wanted the girl to watch it with her. It would make a nice opening for some questions she wanted to ask.
Jubilee wasn't surprised when the girl walked out of the bathroom dripping and naked, and she just tried to keep her eyes down as much as possible while she told her where the clothes she'd gotten for her were. It was amazing how little clue the girl had about basic human things, but Jubilee was starting to understand her pattern. She was a bit like Arnie's character in the new one, expert in everything there was to know about combat but almost clueless about the basics of human life. It made her want to know where this girl had came from, who had made her, what her story was. Jubilee was curious by nature in the first place, and this was a bona fide mystery worthy of anything she'd seen on screen.
Jubilee was deep in thought about that when the girl suddenly stopped, dropped into a crouch, and popped her blades.
"Someone's here!" she whispered intently.
Jubilee panicked for just a moment, visions of the M-Squad lining up to storm the room racing through her head when the knock on the door and the call of "Domino's!" calmed her fears.
"Relax... it's pizza.", she said moments before realizing she'd have to explain. "I asked someone to bring us food, and now he's here. It's ok, you can stand down."
The girl just looked skeptical at her and hid behind the door, claws still out, while Jubilee made the transaction. Poor bastard had no clue how close a potential death waited just inches away, and Jubilee was nervous the entire time afraid one of them would do something to startle her into attacking. Fortunately for all concerned, nothing happened and the guy walked away unscathed.
-----
A bit over two hours later, the pizza was dusted and the final credits were rolling on the movie, the powerful strains of the ending theme reverberating in the tv's speakers. One of the bottles of schnapps was empty, and so was half the vodka, and Jubilee was feeling pretty damned good, full and tipsy and warm and happy. Her partner wasn't showing as much effect from the vodka she'd had as Jubilee surely was, but she seemed pretty relaxed herself, all but curled up with Jubilee like some kind of oversized cat. Under normal circumstances, Jubilee might have protested such closeness, but right now she was too comfortable and content to care.
On the other hand, she was still curious about the girl, and her current alcohol-fueled lack of inhibitions made her more willing than ever to ask questions and get to the bottom of just who and what this girl was. What was she, and who'd made her like she was? Jubilee had to know. Bursting with questions but wanting to play it smooth, she started with conversation.
"So, what did you think of the movie...?"
