Chapter 5, The Stumbling Barrage.
A week had passed without incident from Teagan. The few times Rhaimy had been unfortunate enough to cross paths with her, all he had gotten was an icy glare and maybe a strong shove as she shouldered past. He was still uneasy around her, but he was getting more sure of himself in the hallways, which was fortunate, since he couldn't always have Ian or Elise with him. It was surreal to think of Elise as his girlfriend. Since she had sprung this on him, almost nothing had changed. It was like they were still just friends. Sometimes, he felt like something was expected of him, though. She would pause and wait, and when it was clear he didn't know what to do, she'd push things along. It was a bit confusing, and he was paranoid he was doing something wrong. She didn't seem upset though, so he tried not to let it worry him. Surely she'd tell him, right? It had been a short day at school, the Friday called in at midday instead of three. Rhaimy had come to the Institute fairly close to the end of the semester, so it was already time for the first break of the school year. Not that that gave him a whole lot more free time, since training would take up a lot of that time. He hadn't had the chance to train under Satyr yet, but the things he had heard didn't reassure him. The halls were mostly empty by the time Rhaimy finally got out of class. He had stayed behind to help his teacher pack away a few things, and it had taken around fifteen minutes. Ian had come looking for him and showed up in time to help shove the last of the desks against the wall. As they were leaving, Rhaimy noticed that Ian's left eye was completely white. "Your contacts!" He exclaimed. This was the third time this week he had lost one or forgot to put it back in after lunch. Making sure no one was around first, he dragged him to retrace his steps, ever wary of someone seeing, and found the small lens on the stairs. Steering him into the bathroom, he cleaned it and held his face so he could put it back in, his friend blinking. "Sorry... I'm still not used to having these in" Ian seemed strangely meek just now, usually so hyper and confident, but for a moment there he wasn't quite himself. Rhaimy didn't push the issue, since Ian seemed to recover, but he didn't see the slightly sad expression on his friends face when he turned to wash his eyes in the sink. It was almost longing, but it was covered quickly by his usual grin. "Just be more careful, no ones guna buy that your blind now that you've had the contacts in, and Professor Ceti is guna kill us if we go showing off our powers at school. Hey... you heard anything about Teagan yet?" He asked, leaning against the wall and taking an energy bar out of his pocket. He usually had one, since he was embarrassed to eat in public and missed out on lunch unless Elise dragged him. Ian sat up on the sink counter, looking over his shoulder to check and make sure his eyes were aligned properly. "Nah, she's been pretty quiet... its not like her. I heard she has some big title match tonight though. Some girl from another school is challenging her. Don't know who she is, but shes gotta be a mean piece of work to do Teagan in" "She's a weak piece of shit, door stop" Came the familiar and dreaded growl of Teagan as she slipped through the swinging door. Rhaimy yelped and Ian pushed back against the mirror, but Teagan made an effort to avoid eye contact and shoved past Ian to the free sink, splashing her face. She was already in her training gear. "Not a good idea to talk about me, especially when I'm walking past" There was a good amount of barely hidden menace in her voice, like a dark promise that whatever had brought about this cease fire couldn't last forever. She shot Ian a glance and then Rhaimy, both of which had relaxed a small fraction. She filled her water bottle in the tap and pulled her blond hair back to fasten her sweatband, then gave them both one last glare and turned for the door. "Good luck at your fight" Rhaimy peeped up without thinking. Teagan stopped, the door held half open by her arm, which had tensed along with her back, like something had irritated her. She had clearly been exacting a lot of self control before, but hearing Rhaimy's voice seemed to push her patience. Her hand began to glow against the door, the metal handle bending. "You being smart with me, kid?" She looked over her shoulder, turning and giving him and Ian a purple tinged death glare. "You think just because I'm not pounding your skulls under my heel you can act like everything's peachy?" Rhaimy pressed against the wall, Ian sliding off of the sink, placing one hand on the counter, finger tips lightly braced against the ceramic, his black spines poking out. Despite this, he looked almost as nervous as Rhaimy. "I just thought-" Teagan slammed her fist into the mirror, the tinny impact of her energy shell ringing out loudly as cracks spiderwebbed across, stunning the both of them. She was gritting her teeth, as if pondering a tough choice, purple eyes flitting between them. "Fuck it, she ain't here to protect you" cracking her knuckles on her left hand, she smirked sadistically at them, downing a mouthful of her water, her mind apparently made up. And then, just like last time, an impatient clearing of the throat behind her, followed by a doe eyed expression of realization by Teagan. "I 'am' still here, Miss Baige..." The Vice Principal was standing in the doorway, arms crossed, as plain and emotionless as always, glaring at Teagan, who, much to Rhaimy's surprise, went pale and dropped her water bottle. "Teach! I, I-" Her flurry of choked apologies were cut short by the Vice Principal, raising her hand for silence. "I told you what would happen if you started trouble with anyone else Miss Baige" Now white as a sheet and stuttering, Teagan did not resemble the kickboxer they knew and feared, but a mouse that had just been caught in the eyes of a cobra. "No, no, please, not that, please! I'll take a months detention, I'll do their homework, anything! Just not that!" She screamed as something bright streaked across her calves, a long, sinuous tentacle of green, blue and magenta light now writhing from the Vice Principals back. It had been so quick to come out and had slashed through her legs like a whip. Teagan fell to her knees, biting back the rest of her shriek, glaring up at the woman, much of her desperation now replaced with burning rage. She got no chance to so much as open her mouth, as two other light tentacles slithered out, and as one, they struck her in both shoulders and through her forehead. Going limp, Teagan fell back, unconscious, Ian hopping out of the way. Rhaimy and Ian could only stare, completely dumbfounded by what they had just seen. The Vice Principal took out a small silk cloth to wipe her glasses before turning her gaze on them. "Mr Grimdark, please put your spines away, Mr Hiam, please don't get get food on the floors..." Rhaimy didn't even know he had been squeezing his energy bar between his fingers. They looked to each other, then to Teagan. "She's fine boys. The paralysis will wear off in a moment, but the weakness won't. She knew the conditions. Now the both of you should head out" And with that, she turned to leave, the door swinging closed. Rhaimy and Ian exchanged looks. "Grimdark?" Rhaimy raised a brow. "Hiam?" Ian shot back, smirking a little. "Your last name is Grimdark?" He laughed, much to Ian's grumbling. They carefully stepped around Teagan's limp form, laughing as Ian tried and failed to compared Hiam to Grimdark in a contest of whose last name sounded stupider. Later that night... The Bayville Sports Centre was packed, every seat filled, the crowd cheering and calling out for the blood bath that was usually accompanying any match with Teagan Baige. Usually, the noise excited a dark lust in her, but tonight, it made her grind her teeth. Her arms and legs ached, head dizzy, her gloves feeling far too heavy in her hands, dragging her limbs down. She refused to back down... refused. Trying not to lean in her corner, or let the strain of staying on her feet show, she glared down to the other corner at the raven hair woman with the faded shadow around her left eye, bopping on her feet and rolling her shoulders. They came to the center and bumped their gloves, the bell ringing and the two fighters beginning to circle. Teagan's knees were wobbling. Snarling, she threw a series of limp swings, her arms colliding harmlessly with her opponents block. Throwing her powerful leg out, her once bone breaking kick connected uselessly with the girls knee, the motion making her stumble to the side and wave her arms to find her balance. She came back at her, growling and wailing on her, weak arms flying in what could only be described as a poor imitation of kickboxing. She was already too tired to throw another kick, and so far, her opponent had done nothing but duck and weave and block. And then, it was all over. A strong kick swept her legs out from underneath her, a jab coming down to her throat as she fell, hitting her while she was suspended and forcing her into the floor. Colour exploded across her vision, the flash of the stadium lights dizzying. She could barely make out the sounds of the bell, the crowds roaring, the hollow boom of the announcers microphone. She had lost... she had lost her title.
