Kitty frowned as she neared Lance and Todd. Bobby, trailing behind her nervously, cleared his throat to get her attention but she ignored him stoutly. “Hey, Lance!” she called in her best air headed voice. “I’ve been looking, like, everywhere for you!” She waved cheerily, trotting up to her ex boyfriend’s side. She heard Bobby’s muttered swear and the quickening of his footsteps on the concrete as he strove to catch up with her. “You left soooooooo fast yesterday that I didn’t get to tell you bye!” She was smiling so brightly it hurt her face. The large man who seemed to be escorting Todd and Lance was glowering at her, trying for intimidating and succeeding admirably, in Kitty’s opinion. Ignoring Lance’s stunned expression, she slid an arm around his waist and leaned against him in a half-embrace. “You’re just gonna be mean and give me the cold shoulder?” she pouted.
“Uh…no?” His brow furrowed and he fought a twinge of familiar response to her proximity. Todd was staring at her, wide-eyed and drop-jawed; Lance knew there was no help for him in that quarter. “I…um…”
“Lance!” Graydon boomed, slapping him on the back so hard that the teenager was fairly certain he would have a hand-shaped bruise there, “You can’t just run off and leave a pretty girl like her! She might find her a man who knows how to treat a lady then where would you be?”
Todd snorted, schooling his face into a semblance of devil-may-care normalcy. “He’d just hafta go get him a woman who can kick his ass.” He raised a brow at Graydon and Lance’s mutual look of annoyance. “So, Kitty… what the Hell are you doing here?” he hedged, making a mental note to stay out of Lance’s arm’s reach later. It did not take much for him to see that Kitty was scared spitless about something and he had a fairly good idea that it was the same thing giving him the creeps. “Met Graydon yet?”
Kitty shook her head, her smile frozen in place. She was pretty sure that if she tried to change expression, her lips would be stuck to her teeth. “Uh uh.” With an tiny, inward sigh of relief, she saw Rogue hovering on the edges of the small group, her face set in lines of deepest frustration and uncertainty. Rogue saw her at the same moment and shook her head nearly frantically, making Kitty’s smile slip just a fraction. Yep, she thought, she was right. Lips are stuck.
“You didn’t tell me you’d invited friends out,” Graydon chided Lance in an almost friendly manner. “This is going to be one of our biggest rallies ever. Well, the more the merrier I say! He shook Lance’s arm like he was trying to hard to be jocular, making Lance stagger. “Hope you all brought something to burn!”
Bobby leaned in close to Kitty, his voice hoarse with a mixture of whispering and panic. “See? Bad. Idea. Big time.”
Kitty elbowed him gently, her smile regaining it’s previous force. “I was just on my way back to the school and I realized I couldn’t possibly leave without telling Lance good bye!” She turned her face up to his and leaned in close. “Could I?”
“I dunno,” he growled through gritted teeth. “Give it a shot and find out!” He disengaged Kitty’s grip and smiled tightly at Graydon. He wanted Kitty gone, Bobby gone… it was bad enough Rogue was with them. The fewer the people, the small the mess, he rationalized. The last thing any of them needed was for this to turn into another expose on the Xavier Institute. “So where’s this keg stand?” he asked cheerily, rubbing his hands together. “I’m thirsty.”
Graydon’s gaze flickered to Kitty, then to Bobby, before settling on Lance again. “You over twenty one?”
“Let’s say I am,” Lance laughed. “I won’t tell if you won’t.” He saw Rogue moving closer, her expression now neutral as she resolutely kept her eyes straight ahead, not looking at any of them. Don’t, he thought frantically. Now isn’t the time…
“Love to help you out,” Graydon shrugged, “but the last thing we need is the cops comin’ down on us, ya know?” He paused, his lips quirking into a moue of discomfort and confusion. “Ow!”
Bobby and Todd lurched forward at the same time as Rogue crumpled, her eyes rolling back in her head as her knees buckled. “Rogue!” Todd shouted, careful of the thin band of exposed skin between her shirt sleeve and her glove. It was cold, snow flurries threatening, but her jacket was off and on the ground beside Graydon as if she had slipped it off and dropped it. Bobby, his hands protected by his own gloves, slid his hands under her head and kept her from banging it against the concrete courtyard surface.
“Her bloodsugar,” Kitty extemporized as they drew attention to the scenario. “She must’ve forgotten her medication.” She knelt beside Rogue, looking up at Lance pointedly. “Can you go get her some juice? Fast!”
Graydon, looking none to steady himself, put his hand on Lance’s shoulder. “I’ll take you. James!” He waved over one of his compatriots, nodding at the prone girl. “Keep an eye on them, would you? Hate to have something happen…”
Rogue’s eyes fluttered open and she stared up blindly for a moment before settling on Todd’s face. “Still here?” When he nodded, his eyes wide with fear, she snorted. “Great. I was actually hoping for Beast’s office this time…”
“Shhhh,” Kitty hissed. “You’re dreaming…” James, nearly as big as Graydon in build and height, frowned, but did not comment. “We’re getting you some juice, sweetie. You’ll be fine.”
Rogue nodded slowly, taking the hint. “I think we should call the Professor,” she said carefully. “I feel like I’m going to burn up.”
Bobby made a choking noise but did not voice his comment aloud. Instead, he patted Rogue’s arm. “Do you need your jacket?”
“Not that one,” she murmured, her eyes slipping closed again. “The one I left in the hangar. You know… the one that covers everything.”
Kitty stood abruptly, nearly bumping into their guardian. “I’ll… just… Um… Be right back!” No one stopped her as she bolted, weaving her way through the thickening crowd. She had to find a quiet spot to use her phone, before the fire got started and it was too late.
