Todd smiled
muzzily up at Rogue, his eyes half closed and head
throbbing. “Heeeeeeeeeeeey, babe. I feel shiny.”
“Heeeeeeeeeeeey, babe,” she rejoined. “You’re on painkillers.” She patted his leg idly and sat next to him
on the bed. “Beast said you’d be loopy
for a bit. I guess that means a few
hours, till the stuff wears off.” She
smiled kindly at him and carefully, minding the gap between the top of her
glove and her shirt sleeve, reached across him to take up the plastic cup of
water busily sweating onto the pressboard tabletop. “Here, you should be thirsty,” she added,
pressing the cup to his lips.
Todd
nodded, spilling a bit before he grasped the cup himself and downed the
contents in a few gulps. “’sdry in here!” he complained, shifting restlessly. “Mystique conked me on the head!”
“No, hon, you conked yourself. It’s on the surveillance tape,”
she added, hiding a smirk. Now that she
knew that he would be fine, the image of Todd trying to jump after Mystique
when she re-entered the hangar after disappearing with Storm, only to hit his
head on the underside of the plane’s wing, was highly amusing. “Want to tell me how the trip was before they
notice I’m gone from upstairs?” She was
supposed to be in the library with Mark and Jean and the others but had slipped
away early, before even reaching her destination, to come find Todd. “I just want you to know I’m facing the
distinct possibility of extra sorting for you…”
He snorted,
then winced. “It
was… okay.” A frown crossed his features
quickly, settling there before he had time to dissemble. “Is Logan
around?”
Rogue
paused, brows edging up slightly. “Logan? No… I haven’t seen
him since he left with y’all.” She
shifted, leaning closer and forcing Todd to look her in the eye. “Todd Tolensky,
what’s going on?”
“Um…” He cleared his throat and tried to ignore the
fact that Rogue looked as if she were slowly melting to his drug-induced
gaze. “Um, we’re kind of missing Logan.”
With great
dint of will, she stood carefully and took a deep breath. “What do you mean, ‘missing’?”
“Rogue,”
Beast said sharply, filling the doorway to the recovery room with his
presence. “You have duties to attend to!”
“But…”
“Now.” It was rare
that he used his scolding voice but when he did, those who heard it knew better
than to disobey. With a fairly mutinous
expression brewing in her features, Rogue stalked past Beast and into the hall
without a backwards glance. Beast heaved
a mild but heartfelt sigh as he trod to Todd’s side. “I think you’re out of the straits now,
Todd. Just make sure you come see me
again if you have any dizzy spells, vision problems or unaccountable sleepiness
within the next twenty four hours. And by all means, NO napping!” He held out a hand to help the teenager to
his feet and frowned suddenly as he remembered the painkillers. “Those should
be wearing off soon but in the meantime, don’t do anything that requires high
motor function.”
“Like walking?” Todd slurred as his feet seemed to tangle
with each other and his knees buckled. “Or
bathing?”
“Definitely
no bathing,” Beast ordered as he half-supported Todd towards the door, the
younger man’s steps becoming more certain with each passing moment. “Just take it easy.” Todd nodded vaguely and stepped out into the
hall, pausing for a long moment. “Shall
I walk you to the elevator?”
“Nah,” he
shrugged a bit woozily. “I’ve been on
stronger shit and driven to town before.”
With that disturbing pronouncement, he proceeded to stagger down the
hall like a man drunk.
Beast
watched him until he reached the elevator, wincing as he slumped against the
sliding doors and fell in as they opened.
He tamped down his natural urge to retrieve Todd and make him rest in
the recovery room for a bit longer but, as things stood, he could not. With a deep breath, he shut the door and
turned to hurry to the main portion of the medical unit. “Okay, bring him in,” he called softly,
taking up his stethoscope and a damp cloth.
Scott and Rahne bustled in with Evan between
them, Jono bringing up the rear with Paige in
tow. Rahne
looked ready to fall over but she had refused help three times and Beast
decided that she would fall when she had to, and worried instead about helping
Evan. “Thank you,” the doctor announced
to the group at large. “Now just stand back a bit.” He passed the damp cloth over Evan’s dirty
face, rubbing away some of the grime and filth that had built up there over the
weeks. He was not as malnourished as
Beast had expected but he was definitely not eating well. His eyes were pressed closed in refusal
rather than sleep but Beast did not try to speak to him. “Rahne, Jono… either of you want to tell me what happened or shall
I get Emma down here?”
Jono shifted uncomfortably and shrugged. _*Try it all you like, doctor, but she will
be of little use when it comes to me… _*
Rahne groaned and sank into a cross-legged position on the
floor, her fingers pressed over her eyes as if she were trying to block
something out, some vision or knowledge that was inevitable. “They’re all dead,” she finally said,
dully. “We saw their infirmary and…and…” she took a deep
breath, and it was like glass breaking inside her. She could not hold it back,
could not see it as simply a mission or a clinical exercise in reality. She broke and sobbed so violently and
suddenly that all jumped.
Beast
stopped in his ministrations and took a deep breath. “Get her into one of the beds and get Storm
down here. Now.”
