Tabby took
a deep breath and tugged the sheet gently up to Lucas’s chin. He was down for his midmorning nap and she
had about an hour of peace and quiet in which to panic. Wanda slept fitfully, shifting under the
clean white sheets of the bed they shared.
The Morlock, Marrow, lay on the couch. Tabby could not tell if she was sleeping or
just laying with her eyes closed. She had been still
for hours but something about the way she was positioned, something about her
body attitude, seemed false. “Are you
awake?” Tabby asked so softly that her voice was barely audible, even to her
own ears. The only response was Wanda’s
muttered moan and slight shift in the bed, reacting to some dream. Padding softly to the kitchen from the living
room, Tabby headed for the fridge and a bottle of water. She had gone back to her old habits since
Lucas was no longer breast feeding; she was subsisting mainly on water and sandwiches
made from leftovers, occasionally a box of orange-powdered mac
and cheese. She would be able to go back
to work soon, she knew, if she could trust someone to
watch Lucas. The very thought set her stomach aflame with pain and fear; the
notion of leaving Lucas in anyone’s care but her own, letting him out of her
sight for even a moment was enough to send her into fits of panic. Already her breath was catching in her throat
and her heart was beating a bit too quickly for comfort. Clutching the cold bottle of water tightly to
her chest, Tabby turned to head back into the living room but drew up
short. “I thought you were asleep,” she
breathed, knowing how nervous she sounded and hating it.
“I woke up,”
Marrow shrugged, spikes barely visible in the half light of the kitchen. “Wanda is going to help us,” she said
suddenly, taking a step towards Tabby, eyes flicking to the faint movement of
the other woman’s fingers. “You use your
powers here, you may hurt your son,” the Morlock
noted dryly. “Might want to take this
outside, as they say…”
Tabby took
a deep breath and forced herself to appear calm, to have an attitude. “Too
early for bloodshed,” she shrugged, taking a long draught of the water from the
bottle. “Why Wanda?”
“She is
Magneto’s daughter,” Marrow stated, easing further into the room with a
nonchalance that was more studied than natural.
“And she knows of Essex.”
Tabby
pressed her lips together for a long moment, staring at Marrow
consideringly. “She told me about Essex,” she finally stated. It was not entirely a lie but it wasn’t entirely
the truth, either. Essex’s
name had come up only a few times, even with Magneto when she was living at the
boardinghouse. It had always been one of
those things that was not discussed in depth around her or the other ‘students’,
not even by Mystique in one of her talky moods.
“She didn’t
tell you all, I’m sure.” Marrow’s eyes
roved over the kitchen, lighting briefly on the rack of knives kept by the sink
before moving on to the
telephone. “You’re very
domestic, the pair of you. I never will
have the chance to be.”
“I’m not in
the mood for a pity party,” Tabby began, but Marrow cut her off with a sharp
wave of her hand.
“I don’t
doubt that, not unless it’s your own.
You have no idea of your potential, do you?” the Morlock
woman asked, brows creeping upwards ever so slightly. “No idea just how powerful you could be… Instead you lock yourself here and let your
anger and fear bury you instead of drive you…”
Tabby
slammed her plastic water bottle down on the counter and cut her off. “Shut up. Shut the fuck up. You don’t know
me! I’m not gonna put my kid at risk!”
“No one is
asking you to,” Marrow
replied calmly. “Just yourself. If it
meant protecting Lucas in the future, wouldn’t you be willing to fight now?” She narrowed her eyes and tilted her head to
one side as if in consideration. “Or
would you rather hide, cry and hide here and let Wanda protect you and die
trying?”
Tabby
curled her fingers into fists at her side and straightened her spine so she
stood at her full, if diminutive height.
“Fuck you,” she snapped and pushed past Marrow, barely hissing in pain
as one of the sharp spikes of bone grazed her arm. Tabby did not stop until she was out the
front door and halfway down the steps leading to the parking lot. Her whole life, she realized as she gulped in
great draughts of humid air, was on someone else’s account. Kitty paid for the apartment, Magneto paid
for her before that… She was owned.
Slowly, she turned to head back up the stairs and found Marrow filling the
doorway with her presence. “What,” she
said carefully, “are you suggesting?”
“Help us.”
