Jono let his head loll back against the roof of the car and
he folded his hands across his middle.
_*That’s it.
We’re leaving without her. *_
“You can’t
be serious,” Rogue sighed. “Maybe she
just went back to bed.” She rolled her
eyes as Jono slowly turned his attention to her. “Or not. Fine, fine. I’ll go see what’s keeping her. Knowing her, she and Kurt are probably going
at it in the rec room or somethin’.” Jono’s only
response was a vaguely bemused expression on what little of his face she could
see. Rogue muttered under her breath,
something unflattering and possibly anti-British, and shoved herself away from
the car and headed for the door leading to the house via the mud room. Pausing, one foot still in the garage, she
glanced back over her shoulder at him.
“You know… This whole silence thing is cute for about the first ten
minutes. Then it kind of makes me want to bitch slap you.”
Jono wished he could grin.
_*You’re cute when you’re angry. *_ He waved his fingers in her in a “hurry
along” sort of motion and leaned back against the car as if she had already
gone.
“Oh, bite
me,” she snapped, stomping into the mud room and slamming the door behind
her. There as absolute silence in the
mansion for almost a full thirty seconds as she made her way through the
kitchen to the Rec Room, then a loud crash snapped
her into a full run before she even had time to register what she was
doing. She skidded to a halt in the
foyer, stopping just short of being knocked down by Sam, who crashed through
the front door, ruined wood in his wake.
Kurt hung by one foot and his tail from the modest chandelier that lit
the hall at night and in his arms, struggling and not realizing he was a good
ten feet above the ground, was a red haired young man who was spewing the most
vile swear words Rogue had heard outside of a family gathering. “WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE?” she shouted
above the noise.
Kurt
disappeared then reappeared, ending up in front of her,
the red head still clutched tightly and lifted several inches above the
floor. “She’s a he!” he panted, already
feeling the strain of doing so much before breakfast. “Kitty…I think he had…”
Sam
staggered back in through the ruined door, looking sheepish. People were starting to gather, the noise
having woken up the entire Institute.
“Me an’ Kurt caught her…er…him…snoopin’ around when we were getting’ ready to leave. We were takin’ him
down to Beast when he tried to bolt.
Kitty grabbed hold of him an’…poof.”
He snapped his fingers. “She’s a
he.”
“She…what?” Rogue
shook her head. “What are you talking about?”
“This,”
Kurt shook Jimmy, “is Jenny.” He glanced
past Rogue to where his mother can stopped to stare. “Um, Morgen!”
Astrid
raised her brows. “I almost was missing
the circus… I think I feel quite at home
now.”
Rogue
narrowed her eyes at Jimmy, something clicking in her memory. “You’re the photographer, aren’t you? The one from the Daily
Planet. You came and talked to
the yearbook club at Bayville last year.”
She paused, her eyes slowly going wide.
“You’re the photographer from the Daily Planet. You came and talked to the yearbook club at
Bayville last year,” she repeated in a decidedly different tone.
Jamie edged
forward, staring. “You followed us at
the airport…” He glanced quickly at
Rahne, who was already dressed for her meeting, and felt a surge of
defensiveness. “You followed us and
wanted to take our pictures but Logan
smashed your camera. Er,
on accident.”
Kurt bared
his teeth in what he knew was a frightening grimace. “And I caught you outside the other day…” Shaking Jimmy a little harder than might have been necessary,
“Where did you get the holo?”
“The…the what?” Jimmy had stopped struggling and was merely
letting himself be shaken, hoping that mob mentality
would not lead to a messy death. “What’s
a holo?”
Kurt
snarled but Rogue stepped in. “Whatever
made you look like a girl… where’d you get it?”
She did not offer further explanation about holographic projectors,
despite Jimmy’s curious expression mingled with fear. “How’d you get it, even?”
“I…I got it
in the mail. Someone sent it to me at work and said it’d be the only way I
could get the photos and maybe…” he colored deeply, “And maybe a byline when
the story broke.” He inhaled and then
said in a rush, “I’m really sorry and I had no idea you’d be this mad…”
“Bullshit.” Paige stepped forward and swept her glare
over Jimmy’s slight form. “Bull-fucking-shit.
You’re lucky you didn’t get shot, buddy!”
“Paige,”
Sam muttered, “that’s not legal here…”
“Well,” she
replied, sounding a bit disappointed, “he’s lucky we didn’t call the cops. Hey…” she smiled and turned to Astrid. “Let’s call the cops! He’s trespassing!”
Astrid
returned the smile. “I already placed
the call as soon as I heard the shouting.”
Jimmy went
from a deep red to milk pale in the space of a few seconds. “Oh, God,” he groaned. “They’re gonna kill me!”
“The cops?” Kurt asked, confused, slackening his grip on the
young man. He knew Jimmy would not get
far should he try to run now. He fidgeted
with his holo watch and the blue and fuzzy Kurt
winked out of existence and turned into the “average looking teenager” Kurt he
wore in public.
“No,” Jimmy
sighed. “Clark and
Lois. They’re gonna kill me…”
“Who?” Kurt wrinkled
his nose and tilted his head to one side.
“Are they your parents or something?”
Beast
lumbered through the throng and stopped just short of Jimmy. “Where’s Kitty?” he asked without preamble.
“Not again,”
Rogue groaned, covering her face with her hands. “I’m putting a fucking bell on her!”
Jimmy shook
his head. “Kitty?
Who?”
“I heard
her scream,” Beast said in a low, angry tone.
“I heard someone tell her to come with him, but I missed them in the
hall. I can smell her on you…where is
she?”
“I…I don’t
know!” Looking at the circle of angry
faces closing in on him, Jimmy promptly fainted.
Rogue
groaned again. “Fuck me backwards.” She pulled her glove off and knelt beside
the prone young man. She paused, her
fingertips just above his exposed arm. “I
swear to God, when I get over this migraine, I’m putting bells on every last
damn one of you!”
