Chapter 43
Despite the landscape, Shelia actually wakes warm and well rested. The large furs draped over the bed are partly responsible. The rest can be attributed to the body of her lover pressed close to her. She takes a moment to look at him. Really look at him. She takes in every line, every imperfection that makes him absolutely perfect to her. “I can feel you staring at me,” he tells her with a smirk, eyes still closed.
She playfully bats a hand against his chest. “I was thinking we could go out and explore some today,” Shelia causally mentions.
“Have you been speaking with my brother? He seems quite determined to forge some connection between me and this realm in hopes that I will take the throne.”
“Is that such a bad thing? They need a King. And you were raised to be a King. So it isn’t Asgard, but these are your people Loki and they need you.”
The god pushes down his irritation and sits up. “You do not understand what it would mean to rule the Jotunheim. They are monsters. Their society is primitive and brutal.”
“Jolnir doesn’t seem like a monster,” she pauses when Loki shoots her a sharp look then plunges ahead. “I think we should go out, learn what we can about the people, their lives, their culture. I don’t think you should make a decision based on the stories you were told as children. Learn for yourself and if you still don’t want to be king, I will stand by you.”
“And if I decide I don’t want to go explore today?”
Shelia fixes him with a glare, “then I’ll go without you. Our child will be part frost giant. I would like to know more about them if only for that reason.” She climbs out of the bed and begins to pull clean clothes on. “It hurts me that you hate this part of yourself, but I will not allow you to hate that about our child.” She strides to the door and asks the attendant outside to inform Jolnir that she would like to see the city. He immediately smiles and heads off.
Shelia begins to dress, setting aside the large parka and furs to be put on right before leaving. A knock on the door signals the arrival of their breakfast, which is brought in by a young female Jotun. Shelia takes special notice of the girls features, and cannot help but wonder if her own child will look similar.
The girl sets the tray of food down and bows her head to Loki, who is now sitting at the edge of the bed, and leaves. Loki walks over and takes a look at all the food on the tray before selecting a piece of fruit and beginning to eat. “You need to eat love.”
Looking over the unfamiliar assortment of fruits and breads, Shelia selects one at random and takes a bite. She wrinkles her nose in distaste and sets it down. Loki utters a low chuckle and hands her his piece of fruit before selecting a different one. She takes a bite of the proffered item and gives her lover a relieved smile at the pleasant taste and texture.
“I suppose I should go with you on your outing. Can’t have you out there alone, you’ll likely starve,” he smiles and then begins to dress.
As they walk through the village their guide tells them of the devastation caused by Farbaute’s rule. “The lands will replenish given time. The great herds will take longer, but the Jotun are a strong people,” he tells them.
They walk through an outdoor market and Shelia is struck by how familiar it is. “If you are hungry there are several here who sell food stuffs. Tell me if you see or smell something you would like to try,” the guide instructs.
Shelia tries many items and even coaxes Loki into eating as they continue to walk. The guide next takes them to the center of the village where there stands a large structure seemingly carved entirely from ice. He leads them to the doors of the building and inside. Shelia cannot help but be overwhelmed by the beauty of it all. Sunlight streams in rainbow colors through the opaque ice. Gesturing to a section of the floor, he directs Loki and Shelia to look at the patterns of the light. It is immediately obvious that the light is directed in such a way as to create images on the ground. “The history of our home can be seen within these walls. As the daylight shifts so do the images move. This scene tells of Laufey’s birth and ascension to the throne,” their guide says.
Loki is mesmerized by the images and stands transfixed as they shift with the movement of the sun. It is at once delicate and powerful, beautiful and tragic. He is overwhelmed and suddenly wants to leave and so he takes Shelia’s hand and walks out of the building then begins to head back towards the palace. The guide follows behind to ensure they do not get lost on the way back.
Once they are back in their room Shelia turns to her lover, “what was that all about?”
“I simply wished to leave. Nothing more.”
“Okay,” she responds not believing the lie. “What did you think about the village?”
Loki looks away and begins to strip off his clothing in preparation for the council meeting at sundown. A successor will be chosen to rule the Jotunheim. “We must get ready. I will go to see the successorship and then we can go home.”
“And will you be King?’
Loki rounds on Shelia frustration coloring his words, “I am no king, I am nothing more than a disgraced orphan a spoil of war, left to die by Farbaute in hopes that I would not taint her legacy. Unwanted by anyone I have nothing, I am nothing.”
Shelia feels the anger build until it explodes out of her, “How can you say that? I am nothing to you? After all of this? I mean nothing? Your child means nothing?”
Loki steps back, trying to avoid looking at Shelia. He can feel her hurt and anger rolling off of her in waves, “you mean everything to me. You and our child. You are my life and this….” He gestures around, “I do not want this.”
