Chapter 41
Thor is seated at a large table in one of the antechambers to the throne room. Seated opposite him is the frost giant from before. Thor has learned his name to be Jolnir. “I have spoken to Loki and he has no wish to take the throne of Jotun.”
“Then command him. He must do this!” Jolnir is growing agitated and stands from his seat, pacing the room.
Thor leans back in his seat and chuckles at the other man, “clearly you are not terribly familiar with your would be King.”
For just a moment Jolnir looks worried as he considers that in fact his people know very little of Loki and could very well be allowing someone worse that Farbaute to rule them, but he recovers quickly, realizing very few could actually be worse than the former queen.
Thor smiles tightly at the other man, “I believe we should amend this situation. Loki will lead a group of your warriors to deal with Farbaute. Be ready tomorrow on the morn.”
“And if he refuses to go?”
“Trust that his rage will drive him. He will bring ruin to Farbaute and her ilk. You do your part. You may yet have your King.”
Jolnir sketches a small bow and exits the room. Thor leaves a few minutes later after considering the words he will use to convince Loki to work with the Jotun.
Turns out it takes very little to convince the younger man. Loki’s need for vengeance overwhelms his revulsion at the thought of working with the frost giants. Loki agrees to meet with Jolnir and his companions to make their plans.
It is early morning and Loki is sitting with a small group of Jotun behind a low wall facing a small stone building where they have tracked Farbaute to. They watched Farbaute approach the building and enter without announcing herself. Loki notes her apparent familiarity with the area. He does not know if she is alone or if any others are within the building, but Loki can be patient. Especially in this.
He sends out 2 of the Jotun to scout the immediate area. He also sends 2 others to get a closer look at the building itself. When all 4 frost giants report back with their findings Loki quickly begins to line out a plan. He sends half of the giants to form a perimeter around the building and sends 2 giants each to flank the sides of both exterior doors. This leaves him with Jolnir behind the wall. “So we are clear, Farbaute is mine.”
“Yes sire,” he defers.
Loki suppresses the sigh that tries to escape his lips. He keeps his eyes on the giants on either side of the front door. On the signal from the right side warrior, he rises and strides directly for the door with Jolnir behind him. The god doesn’t even pause as he uses a blast of magic to blow the door to splinters. He quickly puts up a shield of energy to deflect the blasts from the weapons of the 3 dark elves inside. He pulls a pair of daggers from their sheaths, strides into the room and scans his surroundings. With a nod to Jolnir, he heads to the only interior door. Jolnir wastes no time using his mace to strike down the first dark elf. All this happens within space of seconds. The remaining 2 elves do not stand a chance against the power of the Jotun warriors.
Loki shoves open the door and is immediately charged by Farbaute. She swings an axe at Loki’s head, but the god dives to the side to avoid the blade as he throws one of the daggers where it imbeds itself into Farbautes thigh. With a snarl she pulls the blade out and charges at Loki again. In an instant Loki disappears and reappears directly in front of Farbaute where he jams his other knife deep into her neck. He holds the blade in place to staunch the flow of blood, “how does it feel? To know that the last thing you see, as the life is fading from your cursed body, will be that of the child you left to die,” he snarls while he pulls the blade from her neck. Immediately blood begins to pour out from her jugular. Loki watches with dispassionate cold eyes as she sinks to her knees and falls forward. When she stops moving he steps closer and stands in her blood then with one foot on her cheek her turns her head leaving a bloody boot print. Loki squats down beside her and casts out with his magic. When he is satisfied that she is dead he turns and walks back into the main room casually flicking his fingers causing her body to ignite into flames.
“We haven’t much time. We must strike at Malekith while we still have the chance,” he tells Jolnir who immediately signals for the other Jotun to form up. The group makes their way to meet back up with the 2 that were sent to the perimeter. As they get closer Loki catches sight of Malekith as he sneaks up on one of the Jotun. For a moment he hesitates knowing the giant will not survive if Malekith is allowed to strike at him. At the last moment he throws one of his blades. Malekith dodges and the knife is embedded into a large tree. Loki sprints forward and wrenches the blade free and then spins with the knife held back handed and strikes at the elves chest. Malekith jumps back out of the way, but quickly realizes he is surrounded by the Jotun at his back.
Knowing he has lost, he pulls a gravity grenade from his belt and triggers it, throwing it towards Loki. The rip in reality is so powerful that Loki is pulled towards the opening and panic briefly flashes across his face before Jolnir lunges from the side and impacts Loki around the waist knocking him out of the way just as the hole closes. He nods begrudgingly to the frost giant as he gains his feet. In his momentary distraction Malekith has run. The god has lost his patience for this and signals for the frost giants to gather behind him. He takes a breath to center himself and then calls his magic to him. The giants watch as his hands begin to glow green, a physical manifestation of the power burning through his body. Loki thrusts his hands forward and sends a shockwave of magic into the trees where Malekith disappeared. The trees ripple with the force, some topple. Within moments there is complete silence. The look on Loki’s face is grim as he begins to stride forward. Jolnir follows close behind trying not to notice the scattered remains of animals caught in the blast, too mangled to identify. The further they go the less damaged the bodies are, but they are no less dead. Within 50 yards they find the body of Malekith. His features frozen in a scream of pain, blood drying at the corners of his eyes and mouth. Loki turns to Jolnir, “do what you will with his body.”
Now that his task is completed he feels a sense of emptiness and wants nothing more that to be back in his chamber holding Sheila close.
