“I wish,” Wanda said quietly, so as not to wake Lucas, “you would come out.”
Tabby shook her head, holding her son closer. “I can’t. Lucas can’t come into clubs and I don’t want him freaking out if we go to dinner.” She kissed the downy top of his head and smiled at him as he snuffled in his sleep. “Mama won’t let you out of her sight ever again, sweetie. I promise.”
Shifting her weight from foot to foot, Wanda frowned intently. Tabby had refused to leave the tiny nursery set up hastily in the Institute since the whole incident with Essex and the clones. She had refused to let anyone else around Lucas, even to hold him while she went to the bathroom. “Then let’s go to the park,” she suggested, trying not to let her frustration be obvious in her voice. “We can take him with us and have a picnic by the lake. Feed the ducks,” she added, forcing a smile. “Lucas likes the ducks. He calls them quackers…”
Tabby shook her head again. “No, I don’t want to take him out. That’s when bad things happen. We’re fine here. We don’t need to go out for anything.” Lucas emitted a tiny squeak and Tabby loosened her embrace, sighing a tad guiltily. “We can sit here and watch a movie and order take out.” She smiled up at Wanda. “Have a little family moment, you know?”
Wanda took a deep breath, dreading, really, what she knew she had to say. She knew Tabby’s temper, even now, was still a very fragile thing and she would snap at any given moment. The one saving grace, she thought, was the presence of Lucas. Tabby likely wouldn’t use her powers in such close confines with Lucas there. Squatting down to bring herself to eyelevel with her girlfriend, Wanda began softly. “Tabby, look… I really get what’s going on here. I know what it’s like to be scared and what it’s like to be the object of so much…attention,” she chose the word intentionally for it’s innocuousness. “But you know you’re safe here and you know I won’t let anything happen to you while we’re out.” Tabby’s lips parted to protest but Wanda rushed on. “It’s not good that you’re staying hidden down here like this, Tab. It’s not good for you or Lucas.”
“What do you know?” the blonde teenager spat, rising to her feet suddenly. “They tried to kill my son, Wanda. They did things to me that I can’t even explain! I’m not giving them another chance!” Her voice was loud in the small room, almost earache-inducing in it’s volume, but even Lucas’s whimpers of upset did not slow her down. “Your father and his fucking friend did this, Wanda. They were going to use Lucas for a lab rat! They used everyone but… my God… a baby, Wanda. They were going to use my son. His own fucking grandson!”
“It was Essex,” Wanda replied tightly, rising to look Tabby in the eyes. “And Magneto is no more my father than Logan is yours.” She glanced aside at Lucas, who’s reddening face and pursed lips bespoke a rapidly approaching crying fit. “I love you, Tabby. I love you crazy but I cannot… I won’t just let you lock yourself up like this!” She jerked the door open, letting in a blast of cool air from the hallway, sending gooseflesh dancing across their arms and legs. “You’re being cruel to Lucas, locking yourself up in here,” she added over her shoulder as she strode out into the hallway. “Ten minutes to get ready otherwise I’m getting him and we're going to go get some fresh air without you!” She did not wait to hear Tabby’s response but walked down the hall at a rapid pace, nearly knocking over one of the new students and dodging Storm as she emerged from the biology classroom.
“Wanda Maximoff!” Storm called after her. “Stop!”
Wanda walked on a few more paces but, feeling the cold wind teasing at her ankles and wrists, sighed and drew to a halt. Storm lowered her hand as she turned to face her and the white glow faded from the weather goddess’s eyes. “What?”
“Professor Xavier was looking for you earlier,” Storm replied, ignoring the rudeness of Wanda’s tone. “We’d like for you to attend a rally this evening with some of the students in order to gather information.”
Wanda snorted. “ That fucking Friends of Humanity thing? No thanks. I’d get farther in life lobotomizing myself with a hammer.” She waved Storm off and turned to continue on to her temporary room at the Institute to gather her coat.
“Wanda,” Storm was suddenly closer than Wanda had thought possible, her voice in her ear. “I know what it’s like to hate yourself for the doings of others. I understand what you feel.”
“I don’t hate myself,” she snarled, her face coloring a deep red at Storm’s words. “I fucking love who I am.” She tried not to think of her job at the bar in town, of her lack of education, of everything she hated in her life. “I’m a fucking powerful mutant and anyone wants to fuck with me, I can kill them with a thought. A fucking THOUGHT!”
They had stopped just outside the door to the bedroom Wanda had been occupying for several weeks. Storm narrowed her eyes and leaned in close, keeping her voice low to prevent unwanted attention from students wandering the halls. “You have your father’s folly, Wanda. Tonight is your chance to change your stripes. Go to the rally. Gather information.”
Wanda bit her tongue, watching as Storm turned away and retreated to the classroom she had vacated. “Fuck that,” she muttered. “An emergency on your part does not constitute a problem on mine.”
