Zac straightened his tie and grabbed some hair gel from a green container. He gently applied it to some hair on the side of his head that was sticking out before combing it down.
He took a deep breath before exhaling just as deeply, he closed his eyes for a moment before opening them again and staring at his reflection, “The fuck man? It’s only school. You’ve done this before. Get a grip.”
The coloured contacts perfectly hid the only external sign of his mutantcy and made his eyes a natural more ‘normal’ shade of blue, unlike the shocking electric blue they were. Looking himself over in the mirror, wearing the white dress shirt, red tie, tan dress pants and matching blazer he realized this is likely how he would’ve looked if his X-gene hadn’t activated. If he had been born and remained human.
‘But then we wouldn’t even have met,’ Zac realized blinking.
‘And as ashamed as I am of the things I’ve done…. I would’ve had to do even worse things to survive if I hadn’t been a mutant,’ He reasoned with himself.
He smiled a bit as he picked up the backpack, slinging it over his shoulder before making his way downstairs.
Caleb sat at the kitchen table, eating a bowl of cheerios, and looked over when he heard Zac enter the room, “Yo.”
“Hey,” Zac greeted.
Cal looked Zac over, “You’re seriously doin’ this just for her, aren’t you? You know there’s no goin’ back til you graduate.”
“I know that,” Zac replied as he got out a few slices of bread and popped them into the toaster.
“Man, you got it bad,” Caleb remarked.
Zac had been getting a coffee mug down from the counter and paused to quirk a brow at the blonde haired telepath.
“Shove it, Catalyst. Besides if I did say anything it wouldn’t matter,” Zac replied, pouring himself a cup of coffee.
“I ain’t so sure about that… all the same though… thanks. I’d trade places with ya but…. I can’t be sure if I did come face to face with the person that… I … I wouldn’t kill them,” Caleb admitted, his eyes diverting down to the bowl of cheerios and milk, which he was now not eating but just staring at.
“Anytime,” Zac replied as he sipped the black caffeinated liquid.
The toast popped up, some slight waves of steam escaping from the slits within the metallic machine. Zac grabbed a jar of skippy and opened it, “She does miss you, ya know? I don’t know what’s gotten her so scared.”
“I miss her too. Fuck… she’s my sister. I stay away when I know it’s what’s best… or I feel it’s what’s best… when she said that… she meant it, man. She would rather die right now, than have a telepath in her head,” Caleb stated.
Zac paused for a moment before continuing to spread the peanut butter on the toast, ‘is it really that bad, Kiara?’
“Well… figure out what’s going on, and move on from there. Depending on what’s goin’ down that’s what we gotta figure out first,” Zac offered before he began to eat the slice of toast.
Caleb nodded as he scooped up some cheerios and brought the spoon up to his mouth, “Yeah.”
He put the spoon into his mouth, then pulling out the emptied spoon. Zac set the coffee mug down and hurried out of the mansion, “Feel free to have that other slice.”
“Catchin’ a bus?!” Caleb called to Zac, who didn’t answer.
Caleb smirked a bit, ‘Just tell her, dude. Hell ya already jump through fiery hoops for her.’
+++++++++++++++++++Kiara’s stomach tightened convulsively as the contents emptied into the toilet. She sighed in relief as the episode ended and wiped her mouth with the toilet paper before standing up. She threw the used bathroom tissue into the toilet before flushing it.She walked over to the sink, running the water for a moment before cupping some into her hand and sipping it into her mouth. She swished the fluid around before spitting it out into the sink and turned the tap off, ‘third time this week… what gives? I never run a fever either. I guess it’s just nerves that I’ll run into him.’
She took out a small circular device, a small cylinder that resembled the old fashioned camera film containers, an alcohol swab and a lancet.
She quickly cleaned a fingertip and discharged the lancet into the flesh. The alcohol stung in the newly formed pin sized wound. She squeezed her finger to encourage the blood to pool, and inserting a test strip into the glucometer, brought the test strip to the pool of blood. She then wrapped a tissue around her finger as she waited for the meter to give her a reading. She was a bit low, but not by very much.
‘And that’s the other thing. My blood sugar’s been wacky lately. I guess it’s from nerves though,’ she thought to herself.
She shook her head as she popped a placebo before gathering up her testing supplies, she tossed out the used test strip and lancet before leaving the washroom. As she walked she safely tucked her supplies into her backpack and headed out to the school bus, ‘I don’t even have time to eat something else. I gotta dash… and hope that placebo keeps my sugars up enough until lunch.’
She ran up to the edge of the drive way as the school bus pulled up. She climbed on and walked towards the seat she normally sat in when a familiar voice called to her.
“Hey Kiara.”
Kiara paused and looked, there was no mistaking the red hair, cut in a classic boy’s style, but the eyes were the same shade of blue as her eyes. The attire was nothing like she’d ever seen on the boy before, but she instantly knew who he was.
“Zac,” She breathed out.
Zac smiled and nodded to the seat next to him. Kiara immediately sat next to him and looked him in the eye, whispering in a hushed tone, “What are you doing here?”
“I told you to count on me, didn’t I? Actions speak louder than words,” Zac whispered back.
“But you could get in danger doing this just by…” Kiara trailed off.
“So what?” Zac asked, his voice was calm and steady, but his eyes betrayed he was irritated.
Kiara blinked as Zac fiddled with his cuff link, staring out the window while he gave in and let a confession slip out of his lips, “haven’t you figured it out yet, Kiara? I don’t care what happens to me, as long as you’re okay. It isn’t even throwing my life away because without you, I don’t have much of a life.”
Kiara looked away from him. She quickly brought a hand up to wipe away a stray tear, hoping no one had seen it, especially him. The two of them rode the rest of the bus ride in silence, until the school became visible. Without thinking, Kiara rested her hand over Zac’s and firmly squeezed as if she was about to drown and he was the only thing she could grasp.
Zac looked at his hand, clutched in her vice grip. His eyes then moved up to Kiara’s face, her expression seemed relaxed but her body was rigid, as if every muscle now held the tension of her fear within them. All he could do was gently return her gesture.
He wanted to say so much to her at that point, that she didn’t need to be afraid. That he’d zap anyone who dared to threaten her with enough force to make it look like a lightning strike had killed them. As they stood up she reluctantly released his hand and grabbed her backpack. Zac saw a chance and took it, standing with his chest pressed against her upper back, he lowered his head down near her ear, “I’m here.”
She nodded a little, the tension eased, but didn’t fully leave her petite body. Zac inwardly scowled while his expression remained neutral.
‘I just gotta wear this poker face… remember my investigative training and don’t let my emotions control me. That’s easier said than done when I have no real outlet,’ he thought to himself.
‘The next few months are gonna be a real party,’ the sarcastic thought ran through his mind as he followed Kiara Payton off the school bus and into the private school.
