Nathaniel leaned back in the study hall chair and sighed, running fingers through his blonde hair, “Geez! Is it just me or is this study material getting tougher all the time?”
Elizabeth quirked a brow, “what are you talking about? It’s just basic corporate law and human rights.”
“You make it sound like a three step pancake recipe,” Nathaniel joked with a weary smile.
Elizabeth rolled her eyes, setting her books of to the side and scooting over closer to Nate to look at the material he was talking about.
“You’re finding this difficult?” Elizabeth asked.
Nathaniel chuckled, “Oh I don’t know… maybe it’s the hangover.”
Elizabeth shook her head and laughed heartily at the remark.
“You should come out with us this weekend, be like old times,” Nate suggested.
“I’ll pass. They’ve really loaded me up with a lot of shifts,” Elizabeth replied, she blinked when she caught a whiff of gravy.
‘Oh boy…’
“So are you two back to being an item?” A brown haired man asked.
“Nah, I told you Chase, we’re just friends,” Nate replied.
Elizabeth kept quiet, feeling her stomach churn, ‘Come on Liz, think. Think fast!’
Chase looked to Elizabeth, his brown eyes dancing with some emotion Liz couldn’t quite decipher.
“Want a few fries?” He asked, holding out the plate of fries and gravy.
At the offer, Liz swallowed hard before standing and running to the garbage can, conversing with it.
Both men blinked at the sight.
“I-I’ll take that as a ‘no’,” Chase said.
Nate blinked again before standing from his seat and going over to Elizabeth, pulling her hair back as she continued her conversation. Finally the vomiting ended and she spat into the garbage bin.
“Liz, what’s going on?” Nate asked.
“I’m fine,” Liz replied. Catching sight of Nathaniel’s face, his grey eyes betrayed too well that he didn’t buy her reassurance. He gently but firmly gripped her wrist and led her out of the study hall.
“Alright, I’ll just chill here!” Chase called after them.
“Nate?” Liz asked.
Nathaniel kept quiet as they left study hall and he boxed her in against some lockers.
“No jokes Elizabeth Stoner. I know you’ve got an iron stomach, so that just makes no sense. You’re not the type to puke for no reason. Hell, even tanked to the gills you don’t spew. It’s always you that’s taking care of the rest of us sorry drunkards. So you come clean and tell me right now, what’s going on,” Nate pressed.
Elizabeth blinked, desperately searching the recesses of her mind for some plausible response.
Nate’s next question nearly knocked her back from shock, “Is the cancer back?”
“What? No. No it isn’t,” Elizabeth replied, uneasily rubbing her left arm with her right hand.
Nathaniel gripped her right hand, “Look at me Lizzie.”
Elizabeth bit her lip, avoiding Nathaniel’s gaze.
He hooked a finger under her chin and turned her head to look into her eyes.
“Please tell me what’s wrong. We’re friends, aren’t we? So what if we have history. If something’s happened, I want to be there for you,” Nate pleaded.
Elizabeth bit her lip, feeling her eyes water. Seeing her on the verge of tears clearly frightened Nathaniel even more.
“I’m pregnant,” Elizabeth whispered.
Nathaniel blinked, “What? But..”
“Apparently even with the condition that I had… there’s still a 5-10% chance that I could conceive. They just don’t like to get your hopes up,” Elizabeth fibbed.
She hoped he’d buy that explanation while desperately thinking to herself, ‘How the hell would I explain about mutant blood curing the graft vs host disease and thus stabilizing the bone marrow transplant from my father? And that the mutant blood with advanced healing factor is likely the reason why I’m pregnant right now.’
Nate watched Elizabeth for a moment before pulling her into his arms, “that’s amazing Liz! When’s it due?”
“March 22nd,” Elizabeth answered as she returned Nate’s hug.
Nate smiled but then the smile faded, “Liz… whose the father?”
Elizabeth bit her lip, “Umm… a childhood friend.”
Nate quirked a brow, “And he’s involved, right?”
“No,” Elizabeth answered, honestly.
Nathaniel’s expression blanked, “What? Why not?”
“He can’t be involved… he’s in a coma and… and his family and I don’t get along anymore,” Elizabeth admitted, telling a half truth.
Nathaniel blinked a bit and exhaled, a hand coming up to rub the back of his neck. Liz knew this body language, he was deep in thought. Over what? This baby was her responsibility, not his. Besides he’d come out to his parents, there’s no way they could have a sham relationship over a pregnancy.
“You’re not telling me everything,” Nate replied, carefully.
“No,” Elizabeth agreed.
“Because you can’t here?” Nate asked.
Elizabeth nodded.
Nathaniel blinked, “Are the two of you in danger?”
“Really, Nathaniel?” Elizabeth snapped.
Nate brought his hands up, showing the empty palms to Liz as a sign of surrender, “Alright. Let me get our books and we can go talk in your dorm room, okay? I think your roommate is out for a few, isn’t she?”
Elizabeth nodded, “Yeah… and I really want a coffee.”
“Decaf only,” Nate replied, then a small smile crept over his face.
“And I’m treating. There’s no way you’re spending your cash on something so small with something so big coming up.”
Elizabeth chuckled, “Oh Nate… I guess chivalry really isn’t dead.”
“Nope, just hit the snooze button,” Nate joked with a wink before heading back into the study hall.
Two hours later a pale faced Nathaniel sat in Elizabeth’s dorm room, his latte now cold in the paper cup.“Geez… That Stryker guy is a piece of work,” Nate grumbled, staring at the cold caffeinated beverage.
Elizabeth nodded in agreement.
“You’re sure it’s his grandkid?” Nate asked.
“Jason said that his father was going to experiment on us both… and then William said that trying to get me pregnant was an experiment to see who passes on the advanced X-gene, in other words…”
“Which parent is responsible for mutation,” Nate concluded, rubbing his temples before running his hands down, over his face.
She was in deep, he had to admit that. He had to admit that he might not be able to help her, either. Unlikely odds had never stopped him before though, and a new sense of determination rose up inside of him.
“Well… I always said I could love another man’s child as my own flesh and blood… time to put my money where my mouth is,” Nate concluded.
Elizabeth nearly fell out of her seat, and Nate’s hand quickly came out to steady her.
“That is, if you’re willing to let me take on the role,” Nate added, sheepishly smiling at her.
Liz blinked repeatedly, “Did I just stroke out or something? I mean… you’re out… you can’t go back in.”
Nate let out a heavy sigh, “Actually… I’m only half out. My parents looked so forlorn over the idea that I might tell them that I was gay that I bucked under pressure and told them I’m bisexual.”
“Nate….” Elizabeth breathed, but words escaped her. Nathaniel Payton was a very kind man, to be sure. He was sophisticated, worldly, a school football star, the heir to a large computer software company, and one of the wealthiest young men on campus. He also happened to be as gay as the day was long, not that he came across as a stereotype. Far from it, Nate loved playing contact sports, drinking beer, having belching contests with the guys, and seeing who could produce the most rancid farts as much as stereotypical straight jock. He also had a habit of picking up girls who were too intoxicated to think clearly and taking them back to his dorm, to his sleep in his bed while he slept on the floor next to them with garbage bin directly beside their head, just in case. He also made sure to have a large glass of water and some saltines next to the bed for them the next morning. The school’s ‘Jock with a big heart’ he was often called. Elizabeth was the only one he was fully out to, and he’d only felt comfortable telling her after he’d witnessed her defending an openly gay student. His compassionate personality was what had first drawn Liz towards him, that and he also wasn't one to see prejudice and not speak against it. Nate wasn't hard on the eyes, he had a milky complexion, lustous blonde hair, steel grey eyes, and an athletic build. He stood at about 6'2, but didn't come across as intimidating. Liz herself was actually only 5'2. Nate towered a full foot above her, but often joked it was best that way so he could scare off the punks on campus.
Nathaniel gently took Elizabeth’s hands into his own, “I know it isn’t a perfect solution… but for now it’s the best one I can think of. You’re my best friend here, Liz. I can’t stand to think of you and the baby in danger. I don’t want to. It’s going to be easiest for me to protect you both as much as I can if people think we’re back together.”
Elizabeth bit her lip, “I don’t know… I mean… you’d be putting your life on hold for me. I can’t do that to you.”
“It’s not you I’m putting my life on hold for,” Nate replied, gently placing a hand over Elizabeth’s womb.
“This right in here, that’s all that matters. Boy or girl, I don’t care. I’ll raise it like my own, and protect it just as fiercely. At least until you can help your friend. Please let me do this for you, Liz,” Nate pleaded.
Elizabeth couldn’t stop the tears from flowing down her cheeks as she bit her lip in contemplation. After a few moments of silence, she replied with her decision.
