Sweat rolled down the back of her neck as she concentrated on maintaining her bubble. Rae had been working with Xavier on controlling her powers and progress had been made. She was now able to teleport herself to locations around the grounds without having to concentrate too hard and putting up a field was now as easy as breathing but maintaining the field under forces of attack were another matter.
"I...can't..." she gasped, holding both hands out in front of her, her knees shaking with exhaustion as Logan continued to slash at the invisible field that enveloped her. The air rippled around her with each strike of his claws as they connected with the impenetrable walls of the bubble. It wasn’t pain that she felt each time his indestructible adamantium claws glanced off her force field but more of the vibrations coursing through her body from the force of the attack that caused her entire body discomfort.
"Just a little longer, Lo'Rae," the Professor's voice echoed in her mind as he watched her closely.
"Professor....I can't..." she thought back, feeling drained.
"Now, teleport out of the way of the danger, Lo'Rae," he commanded.
Rae grunted as she struggled to maintain her field and she took a deep breath, imagining herself located behind Logan. The dimensional gateway opened up, enveloping her and in the space of a single heartbeat she was floating in blackness before materializing silently behind Logan. She made a well-placed kick to his legs, sending them flying out from under him and he crashed to the ground. She grabbed the staff off her back and brought it down, stopping just short of Wolverine's neck. This final movement sapped the last her Rae's energy and she fell to her knees, gasping for breath.
"Very good, Lo'Rae. That was the longest you've managed to maintain your force field under stress before teleporting."
"Don't forget the attack too, Chuck. Girl made sure she still had enough left in her to take out the bad guy too."
"Of course, Logan. Well done, Lo'Rae."
She smiled up at him and she filled with pride. Xavier had been patient with her, allowing her time to not only get used to her own powers but also the strange new planet that she was to make her new home.
Xavier continued as Logan reached out a hand to help Rae to her feet, which she accepted gratefully.
"During your two months here you have made amazing progress. It takes some of my students’ years to gain as much control over their powers as you have mastered in such a short time."
She looked down at her feet in embarrassment, "No, I don't feel that I've mastered much. I still can't maintain my field up while under attack and I've only ever teleported myself here on school grounds."
"There is time, child. You have excellent control for someone so new to their powers, just give it time and keep practicing. It’s quite possible that you will never be able to maintain the force field under direct pressure for an extended period. I can see the type of strain it causes to your body but when it comes down to it, your force field serves to protect you and your team mates from an outside threat. If you can hold your field up long enough to aid your team in an attack or, if it becomes possible, teleport yourself and an ally out of the way, your field is valuable regardless.
As far as our semi-private lessons go," he nodded at Wolverine, "I believe that you've made so much progress that you can begin to train using your powers while in the Danger Room as well from now on."
She nodded and smiled broadly. She was so excited with the progress that she had made in managing her powers. The Professor had just said that it takes some mutants much longer to even begin to control their powers.
"Now, I think that it is time for us to go and have dinner," he smiled at Rae and hovered out of the Danger Room, leaving Logan and Rae alone.
"Chuck's right, darlin', you’re getting pretty good at this power business." Logan commented.
"Did it take you time? To learn your powers that is." she tilted her head to the side, watching him.
"Not sure as I don't remember a whole lot ‘bout my past. Can't do nothing 'bout the healin' and I guess sometimes the 'ol sniffer and ears pick up things that maybe they shouldn't but I don't have much to control. 'Cept maybe my anger," he chuckled then flexed his hands and let out his claws. "These, now these are a different story altogether."
Slowly Rae reached out a hand and took his. He was surprised at first and then a little nervous.
Why does she make me feel like a little boy in a toy store? When she touches me, I don't want her to stop.
She held the hand up and rotated it in front of her face. She cocked her head to the side again, studying the hand, the claws and his arm. She knew how sharp the claws were, she had seen them go to work in a variety of different ways since she had been here, anywhere from cutting down the holographic enemies in the danger room to splitting a frozen chunk of meat like it was butter.
"They just go back in your arm?"
She ran a finger down the length of his arm and he shivered a little bit at the touch. She marveled at the amount of hair that grew on Logan's body. The people on her world grew very little to no body hair and Logan was covered in it. She found it fascinating and wondered how it would feel against her skin.
"Yup," he flexed his hand and popped the claws back in then out again.
Rae tilted her head and watched him. Under her intense gaze he shifted uncomfortably wondering why she made him feel the way he did. He knew what the feeling was, he liked her. He liked her a lot. Most people didn't like being so close to him and when they were, they were usually uncomfortable. He could smell it on them but not her. Orange blossoms, she always smelled like orange blossoms and lingering scents of the people of her planet, which he found interesting. Except now; right now she smelled a little different. Almost the scent of...arousal?
Is she…does she want me? She smells so good, I just want to taste her skin. I should kiss her and see what happens. Damnit! Why the fuck am I suddenly being a coward?
“Always had ‘em as far back as I can remember. Don’t know if they came with the adamantium that covers my skeleton or if they were there before but can’t deny that they come in handy in a pinch.”
Her hand was still on his arm, her fingers twisting around in the mass of hair while the other that was holding his hand pressed her fingers up against his closed fist, causing him to open his hand and lay it flat against hers. His heart started to pick up a little bit at the intimacy between the two of them and longed to pull her into his arms. He started to move in closer but her next actions left him disappointed.
She curled her fingers around his hand between his fingers and rotated his wrist, looking at his claws from all angles. Rae ran a finger along the top of one from the base right to the tip and when she touched her finger to it, a drop of blood formed.
"Amazing! Weapons that are forever with you. Do they ever get dull?" she looked at him, seemingly oblivious to his inner emotional turmoil.
"Let's say we head to the kitchen and grab a bite," he said as he pulled his hand away from hers and sheathed his claws. Stupid, Logan. Of course she's not interested in you like that. She might not be afraid of you but that doesn't mean that she's got feelings for you or anything. He walked to the door and slammed a fist into the controls.
Rae was slightly taken back, "Uh, sure. That sounds good." She quietly followed him out of the Danger Room. I did something wrong but I'm not sure what. I wanted to touch him so badly. Things were so much easier on Tar'lal. You wanted to find pleasures with someone you just told them so but I don't just want to take Logan as a lover, I want him to be my mate! I don't know how it's done here on Earth. Maybe he doesn't like me. He didn't seem to like me touching him. She sighed and they silently walked down the hall to the elevator.
They stood in silence for a few more moments while waiting,
"I'm glad that you're doing so well with learning to use your powers," Wolverine said without looking at her.
"Thank you. The Professor has been very patient with me. I've learned so much in the time that I've been here."
"How long has it been now? Two months? Seems like it's been a lot longer than that. Kinda feels like you've always been here."
The door to the elevator opened and they stepped inside.
"Jubilee said the same thing to me yesterday. You really are all my new family now," she placed a fist over her heart and dropped her head, "But I do miss my father, my brothers and my people."
"Tell me about them," Logan turned to look at her, "tell me about your world."
Rae cocked her head to the side, "Really? You're interested in Tar'lal?"
He shrugged, "Sure, why not. I wanna know all about you. You're family now, right?" Is that really why? Because you consider her 'family'? Of course not, you just want to know more about her.
She nodded, "Alright. Want would you like me to tell you about first?" The elevator stopped and the door opened. They stepped out and into the hall and continued towards the kitchen. They could hear the chaotic mesh of voices and laugher the moment they stepped out of the elevator.
Rae laughed, "It sounds like no one is skipping out on dinner today."
"I smell sammich fixin's so I doubt it. How about we fix up ourselves somethin' and continue our little chat outside where it's a little less noisy?"
She smiled and nodded, "I like that idea."
They both walked into the kitchen and found their teammates surrounding the table set up in the middle of the large space piled with platters of meats, cheeses and a plethora of veggies and toppings. Rae stopped just short of the door and cocked her head and the table of food,
"Wonder who was in charge today," she asked no one in particular.
"That would be Ororo, I believe," came a thick Russian accent from just behind her and she looked up over her shoulder and into the broad, smiling face of Peter. He brushed past her and headed to the table, where he proceeded to take a plate and pile it with breads and meats.
A little unsure of how to proceed with a meal of this type, Rae followed in Peter's footsteps and picked up a plate. With so many different choices of breads and rolls she wasn't sure which to choose so she stood there looking, trying to decide.
"I recommend the croissants, darlin'," Logan purred into her ears.
"Which are..." she started but stopped when he pointed to a crescent shaped roll. She flashed him one of the smiles that he swore melted his heart and turned back to the laden table. They continued to assemble their sandwiches in silence, the voices of their teammates surrounding them. A few minutes after she had arrived among the chaos Rae finally turned away from the table with her plate and scanned the room for Logan. She saw him leaning against the kitchen door heading to the formal dining room picking at some of the slices of meat on his plate. She followed him through the dining room and out onto the patio.
They both sat down at one of the patio tables and eat in silence for a few minutes before Rae spoke,
"There are so many things about your planet that fascinate me," she held up a slice of deli meat, "like buying pre-sliced meat at a market. On Tar'lal we don't have such things. Sure, we will barter, trade or purchase goods from a market or other villagers but nothing like this."
"You've mentioned that before. Tell me more about your village."
She nodded, "I'm my home village our market is in the center; all roads lead to the market. Walls from the stones of houses surround the market and extend out," she inhaled deeply, "I can almost smell the fresh meat dumplings and fruit pies that are brought out each morning." She scowled down at the meat stuffed croissant in her hand before taking a large bite. Logan chuckled and stuffed the remainder of his lunch into his mouth.
“At one end is the gate into the village and the other houses the training area," she continued after swallowing. "Once there was a great wall that surrounded the village but long ago it was destroyed and much of the stone was used to build homes. Pieces of it still exist in some places and the largest pieces were actually used as walls for homes. My home was built with one such piece," she grinned with pride.
"You said your father is a weapons master?"
"Not a, he is the Weapons Master! The best our village has ever had and probably in all the lands that surround ours. He is in charge of personally seeing to the trainings of any fighter who enter the Hall."
"But not everyone is trained to fight?"
"Well, everyone is taught from the time that they can walk to fight but some are born better than others and those who are, are sent to the Hall where they will train and become warriors for our village. Everyone is instructed so if our village was invaded we could defend ourselves. That is how the wall was destroyed in the first place. It happened long ago but some of our elders remember when the first wall crumbled."
Wolverine crossed him arms over his chest and leaned back in the chair. Trained to fight since they are children, all of them. No wonder the gal is so bottled up inside. Fuck! She's had it pretty damn hard. I can see the scars all over her body but that smile, she smiles all the time and it's such an amazing smile.
“Is your planet similar to Earth? I mean, do you guys have, uh, oceans and forests?”
“Of course! Here you have technology that allows you to see your world from above. I’ve never seen Tar’lal from above so I’m not certain how different it is from place to place and I’ve only traveled several days from home in either direction from the village. We have a river that flows near where we are able to trap water life, I believe you call it ‘fishing’?,” he nodded and she continued, “and the forests are thick with game to hunt, so our village is rarely out of meats. There are those who own lands outside of the village who grow crops and grains to sell to merchants. If you do not grow your own food, you obtain it from someone who does.”
He leaned onto the table top, “Let me get this, no supermarkets?” She shook her head. “And no cars, trucks or the like?”
“No, we have no mechanical devices on Tar’lal. We work with our hands. We obtain clothing from a clothing merchant, although we wear a lot of tanned hide. Nothing as soft as the clothing that you have here.” She ran her hand down the front of the tank top that she was currently wearing then smiled at him across the table.
“Huh.”
She cocked her head at him, “It is the way of our world. My father always said that because we count on each other our village flourishes.”
“But your planet is war-like?”
“Just because our village flourishes doesn’t mean that other villages do as well. Or that one people doesn’t try to rule over another. My people are not the only people on Tar’lal and our lands are full of lush and fertile fields, forests rich with game and pure, clean waters. Again, I’ve not ventured much outside of our lands, which extend beyond the limits of the eye so I cannot claim that I know what lies across Tar’lal but I do know that many lands war against each other, trying to seize complete control over each other and ours is no different.”
He narrowed his eyes at her and spoke aloud his next thought, “And do your people also seek to control others?”
“Never! We do not have a lord that rules over our lands. We are a self-governed people. While we do have a council of elders, my father being one, we all vote on matters of the village.”
“Sounds interesting. I would like to visit your home.”
“Perhaps someday you will be able to.”
