Whispers in the Night
Siobhan stared bleary eyed at her desktop monitor. She had been unable to sleep well in almost a week. Sleepless nights were completely out of the norm for her and she wasn’t dealing with it as well as she had hoped. Every time she closed her eyes, she felt as though she could lie down on those silken sheets and come to the call of the man in her dreams. The visions were filling her mind when she was awake and overwhelming her dreams when she slept.
“Rough week?” A thin, tall man leaned through her office door, concern knitting his brow.
“Oh, hey Raymond. Yah. I dunno what’s wrong. I just can’t sleep.” Her head fell into her hands as she rubbed at her eyes.
“You know, with the weather, everything is really slow. You don’t have to be here. You can go home. Try to get some sleep.”
She shook her head and tried to appear as though she could remain on task. “I’ll be fine. Thanks, though. I need to make sure we don’t fall behind.”
“I’m not asking anymore, Siobhan. Go home. Take a portable. Do something from home if you’re so inclined. But you need to rest. If we get a pop, you’ll be useless and we both know it. I’ve all ready cleared number seven – take it with you.” Raymond straightened his tie, rolled his shoulders and fixed his name badge. This was considered “power tripping” from her boss.
A slanted smile broke across Siobhan’s face before it washed with relief. “You’re right. I need to go home. Thanks, Raymond. Working with you is just the pits.”
The tall man smirked. “Yah, well, you smell bad. Shower up before you come back into the office, stinky.” He left her laughing to herself while she packed up. While signing out, Siobhan collected a portable unit and bundled up. She checked her office, turned off the light and headed for home.
Loki was ready to explode with unspent energy by the time she got home. He bolted from the house and immediately began smelling everything that could have possibly changed in the few hours since he had last been outside. Although not much had really changed considering the snow was still fresh on the ground. What was the expression? You can lead a man to water…
She felt as though her legs were frozen through and through by the time Loki finally finished his inspections of the yard and remarked his territory. In case, you know, any dogs were looking for a fight for some territory. He was ready. The instant he reached his dog bed, he yawned, stretched, and flopped down with the sounds of a very tired dog. His energy mood swings were just ridiculous. With a sigh, Siobhan began to tidy up. She put the dishes away, cleaned up the counters, and began her laundry. Having completed the rest of her household chores for the rest of the week, she moved to tidy up her bedroom.
She found her favorite book, discarded on the floor earlier, and sat down on her bed. She thumbed through her favorite chapter, the one where the Prince takes his Princess in such a demanding manner and – she stared, having found hand scrawled writing across her pages. Startled, she tossed the book back onto the floor where she found it. It slid across the floor and fell open to the penned scrawl.
Someone had written in her book! Someone must have gotten into her home and… And! And done nothing but write in her favorite book? She had been home for hours. Nothing was missing. Nothing was out of place. Her heart beat in her throat and her hands rubbed up her arms. She felt very exposed and violated. Why take nothing? Why write in her book? And why in her favorite chapter?
Biting back a shiver, she picked up her book again and nervously opened it to the written page. “What does my mortal desire? Call for me. I will fulfill every dark dream you possess. Say my name. Invite me into your heart, your soul and your body. Your Prince, Loki.”
Trembling, Siobhan rifled through the rest of the book. Was there another message? Who wrote the message? Why? Who is Loki? What does he want? Her mind was filled with questions and fear sizzled up and down her spine. Why me?
Suddenly, she dashed to all exits to her home and double checked all the locks. Everything was secure. She took a visual inventory of her expensive items: TV, movies, Blu-ray player, jewelry; again, nothing was missing. Gripping her arms, she fell back into bed and buried beneath her covers. She couldn’t stop her teeth from chattering and her toes from waggling.
Getting an idea and not feeling up to being left alone, Siobhan fished up her cell phone and made a quick call to one of her less than awesome previous dates. “Cody? It’s Siobhan. Hey, are you busy? Wanna have a movie date at my place?” Within an hour, a young man showed up at Siobhan’s door.
The Prince of Asgard narrowed his eyes and stalked away from his mirror. Anxious to find out the full reaches of the mirror’s magic, he was not prepared to be brushed aside for some “Cody,” or anything else for that matter. Pitiful mortals, so easily frightened. Spineless little quims indeed! He shot one glare at the mirror before slipping from his rooms intent on finding something less than decorous for fun.
Cody glanced over at Siobhan whom had not stopped flicking her eyes to the doors and windows of her small house. The movie was on, but she wasn’t watching it. She was hugging her side of the sofa like it was about to float away. She was covered from throat to toe with her blankets yet she looked as cold as any poor ragamuffin on the streets. “Are you all right?”
“Huh?” Siobhan snapped out of her obsessive door staring state and glanced at Cody.
“You’ve been acting a bit uh… different. Are you all right?”
“Oh, uh, yeah! I, uh… I just got surprised earlier and I thought I heard someone at the door. There wasn’t anyone. Ha ha! I just got spooked.” She cleared her throat, covered her blushing cheeks with her blanketed hands and peered at him with dark eyes. “Guess I got a little more than spooked,” she murmured sheepishly.
“Did you call the police?” Cody’s brow furrowed as he turned to give her his full attention. “Is everything all right?” He reached out, took her small, trembling hands from the blanket and held them.
“Oh, uh… no. No one was there. I just thought… Well. I called you. You came.” She bit her lip and smiled slowly, feeling stupid yet warmer just from his touch.
“Poor thing. Do you feel safe here? We could always go back to my place. Or, if you’d like, I could stay here.” His eyes pleaded with her. He wanted to stay. She could practically taste his desperation. Maybe she wasn’t the only one who had spent these cold days alone.
“Yeah. Of course. I’d like that.”
A grin shot across Cody’s face and he scooted next to her, arm draping over her shoulders as he tugged her against his body. “I’d love to stay. Make sure you’re safe.”
“Yes. Make sure I’m safe,” Siobhan murmured, her thoughts drifting back to the handwritten letter in her book. She leaned her head against his shoulder, eyes drifting shut as the movie continued. “Fulfill my every fantasy, hmmm…”
Cody, assuming she was worn out from the surprise she had received, smiled down at her and kissed the top of her head. He tugged the blanket closer around her before moving to toss another piece of wood on the fire in the fireplace. When the fire was good and stoked, he turned to find Siobhan peacefully asleep. Her pale skin was glowing from the shadows cast from the firelight. Scooping her up in his arms, Cody eased her from the sofa and carried her to bed.
Stirring, she struggled weakly. Dropping kisses on her forehead and whispering sweet words into her ear calmed her, and Cody was happy to oblige. He carefully placed her on the bed and tugged the sheets and blankets up around her. “May I stay here?” He brushed her hair back behind her ears. “In bed. With you?”
She nodded sleepily, her hands weakly squeezing his. “Stay.”
Grateful, Cody crawled carefully into the bed beside her and snuggled down into whatever was left of the sheets and blanket. The two dozed peacefully side by side throughout the night and into the morning where Loki, Prince of Asgard, observed them from afar.
After his plans were dashed to pieces by a needy and spineless female, Loki had deigned to find entertainments elsewhere with few ideas that were less than harmful. He stalked from his chambers and wound his way outside, his feet leading him. He found himself in the alleys between brew houses, the smell of food mixed with the rich scents of beer and wine. Cheerful shouts and bellows echoed from the mead halls where his brethren were celebrating some victory at some point in history. From the window Loki could see them, shoulder to shoulder, arms clasped, a pint in one hand and a woman in the other. They knocked each other’s glasses clumsily, spattering each other in their spirits. He needed a shower just watching them douse each other.
With a curl of disgust on his lips, he turned on heel and began his pacing away from the streets and the ruckus that never truly ended. With a history as long winded and battle filled as his, there was a celebration for past victories nearly every day. He was almost out of the reach of the crowd when a woman stepped in his path. He had adjusted and moved to walk around her. She had moved in front of him again.
He straightened, wrists clasped at his back to keep from reaching out to strangle the offending lady, and breathed impatiently, “What do you want?”
“Oh, dearie. I don’t think it’s what I want. I think it’s about what you want.”
He gave the woman a look up and down, suspicion and incredulity coloring his voice, “And what, pray tell, is it that I want?”
She closed in on him. He could smell that she had fish for lunch. His nose turned up. One of her hands slipped to his side. He grasped her wrist firmly. “Well, dearie. If you don’t let me undo your pants, you can’t get what you want, now, can you?” He relaxed his hold on her wrist. Her hand cupped over his groin. “Isn’t that it, then? Three silver pieces. I’ll swallow you whole.” She moved closer, her lips nearly touching his ear. He could feel the stench of her breath rolling past his shoulder.
Loki’s hand fisted in her blonde, mussed hair. He forced her to her knees, her face guided to his crotch. “Dearie, is it? You’ll have your pieces. Now, open wide.”
