Chapter 4
-----
They sat in silence as Jubilee drove to a gas station, and they filled up and moved on without a word. The girl hadn't even said anything when Jubilee had given her the food she'd bought for her from inside, and they ate in silence as they drove on. This time the lack of conversation didn't bother Jubilee.
Eventually they pulled into their destination, a pawnshop in an area of town where they wouldn't ask questions about where the stuff had come from. Still a bit paranoid, Jubilee parked out of sight, not wanting to be seen in association with the van in case someone spotted them. Jubilee grunted softly as she picked up the stuff they'd taken off the unfortunate victim of their mugging scheme, and smirked to herself that she was glad she picked a place that wouldn't pry overmuch. A whole lot of gaudy men's jewelry and a 9mm handgun they couldn't provide papers for... oh yeah, they could as well have pinned a "stolen merchandise" note on it and scarcely been more obvious.
Jubilee blinked in surprise as the onerous load of the bag was taken off of her hands... Jubilee hadn't heard her move in, which was no surprise, but the fact that the girl helped her after the angry tension from the confrontation before was.
Thinking about that confrontation made Jubilee realize she had best clarify the mission before they went in to avoid any unpleasant surprises like the one that had sparked their current uncomfortable silence.
"Look..." she began "These people are gonna figure out pretty quick this is stolen goods. I picked this place because I'm hoping they won't be the type to care. But that means they're also not likely to be nice people and they won't necessarily play fair. Now I gotta say I don't expect trouble really, they'll probably just dick us on the price as best they can and let us move on, but there's the outside chance they might play more hardball."
The girl nodded to her and looked to her as if to say "yeah, and?". So Jubilee continued.
"So we should be ready for anything, but do not and I mean I repeat do NOT use lethal force unless there is absolutely no other option. Are we clear on that?"
The girl just shot her a look like she thought Jubilee was being unreasonable to the point of being irrational. Jubilee just sighed, dreading the thought of having this argument again, but saw little choice.
"Look, you trusted me this far right? You said you'd listen to me, so please, just promise me ok? No killing."
She just shrugged. "It's what I do."
Jubilee shot her back an impossibly annoyed look. "Not with me you don't. Just promise me and come on."
She shook her head. "I won't make promises I can't keep."
Jubilee sighed. "Why can't you keep it? Is it really so hard to just not kill anybody?"
The girl frowned. "I am what I am."
Jubilee shrugged. "Then change it." An exasperated sigh. "Just try, ok? Come on."
The young assassin just blinked, then softly nodded and followed Jubilee.

Fortunately for them, or perhaps for the proprietors of the shop, the transaction had proceeded without incident and it wasn't overlong before the pair was walking back to the van minus their load of stolen goods and plus a good few hundred dollars. The price had been surprisingly close to fair, in fact, and Jubilee was positively thrilled with the take. She didn't bother to hide her grin as they got back into the van, already thinking ahead to how to spend their windfall, or at least part of it. Of course it would be foolish to spend the entire wad, but they had done well enough to justify the urge to celebrate a little.
Their first step wouldn't cost them anything, she explained to her quiet companion as she pulled into the mission church parking lot. Jubilee had left behind all her stuff, little as it was, when they had fled the mall, and from the looks of the van's contents it didn't seem the girl had any real clothing reserves either, so the first thing to do was get them a bit more to wear. They had it pretty easy in a way, as Jubilee explained, being small and female meant they had a far better selection available to them in these kinds of places than your average homeless man did. Most people that donated clothing got rid of every type, and decent men's clothes went fast while stuff for small women, especially those as small as them who could fit in things a growing teenager might conceivably outgrow whilst the items were still rather new, was relatively abundant.
The girl hadn't said much while Jubilee explained this, and opted to stay in the van while Jubilee "shopped", but it was fairly easy to select things for the both of them considering how close the pair was in size. In fact, it was kind of nice to pick out things for two, and it reminded Jubilee how alone she had been since she'd been on the streets. She wasn't sure how much her new companion would appreciate it, but going through the motions of selecting "gifts" for someone made Jubilee feel good even if only for the ability to indulge in illusory affection. It had been far too long since she had felt connected to anyone.
When she got back to the van, loaded with several bags of choice items, her companion was asleep in the passenger seat. She looked over when Jubilee opened the door, opening her eyes lazily like a sleeping cat checking on a noise, before settling back into her nap. That suited Jubilee just fine, she didn't really need her for the things she needed to get done and it made sense to go ahead and let her sleep. It wasn't like she was exactly a vibrant conversationalist anyhow. Still, it felt nice to know she was nearby, not just in case of trouble but because it was just nice to have someone about whom she could say they were in their mess together. The sense of solidarity was something she missed.
The next stop was brief enough, a small convenience store with liquor, and beyond the look the clerk gave her when she flashed her fake ID there was no trouble. The obvious fact that she wasn't a cop and she was actually paying for her items rather than shoplifting anything seemed good enough for him, and soon enough she was heading back to the van with two bottles of her favorite schnapps and a bottle of vodka for her companion. She wasn't really sure what the girl drank, and she didn't bother to wake her up to ask, but she figured vodka was a safe enough choice. It was kinda like vanilla ice cream, plain but no one really hated it and you could flavor it up if you wanted to. That errand complete, they were on the move again and on their way to their final stop of the evening.
