Chapter 4. The Untouchable Barrage
Elise squared her gaze at Teagan, standing up and brushing Ian and Rhaimy aside, who maneuvered behind her. Ian only seemed worried for his own safety, and who could blame him, when a Mutant kickboxing Junior Champion was after you. But Rhaimy's worries were for once not directed at himself. "Out of the way Farm Girl. These little brats owe me" She clenched her fists, but Elise stood her ground, the two of them staring each other down. Elise slowly removed her new clear glasses and slipped them into her coat pocket, voice much less confrontational then her stance, feet spread and knees very slightly bent. "Whatever they did, I don't think burying them with your fists will help Teagan... why don't we just talk this out" Teagan threw back her head and laughed, blond bangs flopping. "Oh, no matter how many times I hear that it never sounds like an actual alternative" She pulled her MMA gloves up tighter, the material almost as tense as the bulge of her arms. Those sadistic eyes, now a purple twinkle, were set on Rhaimy and Ian, traveling back up to Elise. Rhaimy opened his mouth to protest, shutting it and then pulling at her coat, looking behind him, as if wanting to drag her away. "Elise, please, don't get involved..." She silenced him with a barked order, not even bothering to wave a hand or even look at him, set into the earth like a statue, staring down the woman in front of her. "Listen to your boyfriend Hick, don't involve yourself" The energy from her eyes rushed across her cheeks and covered her skin, encasing her whole body in a thin shell of power, thrumming like an active taser. She spread her feet, punching a fist into her palm, which made a loud bang. "Just back away now" Elise grabbed a handful of her coat and pulled, the Velcro on her underarms coming undone easily, the coat flying off to drift behind her, leaving her arms bare. "I got involved when you threatened my boyfriend!" Crossing her arms, she dug her nails into her shoulders and then threw her hands out, each fingertip scraping with a bright yellow streak of light, two razor sharp darts of Hard Light streaking with a high pitched whistle. They bounced off of her chest harmlessly, each impact accompanied by a little pop of expelled force and a pinging sound, the projectiles littering the grass like glowing pine needles, humming faintly. Smirking, Teagan gave a quick glance around her feet. "That the best you can do bitch?" "Nope" She said simply, snapping her fingers. Suddenly, the needles flared up, making a low whine, and one after the other they burst in blinding detonations, the light trapped within released in a hot rush, blasting the grass to cinders. Rhaimy and Ian exclaimed, Rhaimy tripping backwards and landing on one of his duplicates. The smoke screen that rose up from the crater blocked their view, but Rhaimy wasn't looking at it... his eyes were locked on Elise. The way she stood, so protective and certain, the ash and burning leaves brushing by her... such a strong image, and he knew that it was all for him... She had just called him her boyfriend. "That tickled" Growled Teagan, her purple silhouette suddenly burning through the smoke. Leaping out and rearing her fist back, she brought it down like a kinetic sledgehammer. The three of them managed to scramble away, but the shockwave threw them back, shattering the rock and earth with trivial ease. Rhaimy was sent down on his side, popping into 6 copies which quickly dissipated, Ian jumping back a distance and landing in a crouch, hand splayed on the grass, his claws coming out and ripping into the soil. Elise had been the target, however, and didn't get out of range in time, the fist coming so close to her face she had felt the humming of that shield travel down her skin, a mere inch away. She been thrown off of her feet, sliding along her side. Teagan rose from the crater, eyes flaring with brilliant purple light, smirking down at Elise, her attentions now primarily on her. "Nice first shot... but your stepping into the ring with Barrage!" She clenched her fists and ran at Elise as she scrambled to her feet, striking her arm again to send another blast of Hard Light at her, shattering uselessly against her forehead. Elise dived out of the way, just missing the swung fist that crashed loudly through the bow of a tree. Laying on her side, Elise rolled onto her back and threw a dart into the trees shattered lower half, which promptly exploded in Barrage's face, the debris blinding her. Snarling and rubbing at her eyes with one fist, she swung blindly as Elise scampered out of range, getting to her feet and waving her arms to keep from stumbling. She had gotten a little of the blast herself, eyes stinging. Ian jumped between the two, now in full Mutant form, small black curved spikes, like thorns, sticking out of his elbows, knees, shoulders, and spearing through the back of his clothes and out of his sneakers from the back of his heels. Each finger was tipped with a vicious looking claw, while he had landed in a three pointed crouch that just looked painful to pull off. Rhaimy hadn't gotten use to Ians flexibility yet... all he could think of when he saw it was bones crunching. "You BITCH she roared, squinting and dashing the dirt and cinders from her eyes, snarling. "You think your little friend can keep me from you?!" Ian was practically shaking when Barrage came for him. She would have simply shouldered him aside on her way to Elise, but suddenly, Rhaimy, who had spent the entire fight locked up where he had fallen, threw himself between her and Ian. Because he was so short, her knee slammed into his ribs, lifting him up with a wheezing grunt, but he clung to her leg, as another threw himself towards them, getting trampled but grabbing her ankle and tripping her up. Swearing, she fell on her hand and kicked back, shaking the duplicate like a wet rag, but three more jumped onto her back, and then another two trying to get her arms. Growling, she pushed up to her feet, pulling one off of her and throwing him into the ground, swinging out, but for every clone she managed to rid herself of, another two attached themselves and clung for dear life. "Come on, lets go!" Rhaimy yelled as he appeared behind them, grabbing both of their elbows and pulling them along. It didn't take much to convince them, Ian's spikes retracting and his joints popping as he ran alongside them, something which would have made Rhaimy's skin crawl if he weren't so focused on putting as many miles between him and Barrage as he could. By the time they got back to the Institute gates, they were winded and collapsed against the bars, panting for breath. Rhaimy fell back over Elise's legs, Ian putting his hand against the gate and lowering himself to sit against it, his shoulder giving an odd twist as he did so, bones still not readjusted. Even Elise was holding her side, a stitch paining her, sitting back against the bars. "Whoa... lets not go walking in the park again. That girl has some major issues" She panted, reaching up to unconsciously adjust her glasses. She touched her bare nose and then it clicked that her new glasses and coat were still back at the park, probably destroyed. For a second, she looked very disappointed, but she hid it quickly and looked to the others. "You guys okay?" Ian and Rhaimy nodded. He hadn't missed the expression... Ian gave a last roll of his shoulder to straighten out his bone and gave Elise and Rhaimy a tentative grin. "So... girlfriend?" Rhaimy went bright pink, but managed a quick glance up at her before looking away. After a minute, she reached down to pet his silky hair, a slight red tinge to her cheeks, grinning. "What, did I stutter?" Smiling, she got to her feet, pulling him up as she went. "Come on, lets get inside, before someone else decides to try and kill us" As Elise turned away, leading the now mute and glowing Rhaimy, Ian chuckled and tapped her shoulder. When she turned around, she saw a beaten and dirty Rhaimy stumbling down the road towards them. Collapsing at her feet, she reached out to catch him by his thin arms, the mute copy heaving and looking up at her with an effort, smiling timidly, the coat and glasses clutched to his chest. When Elise saw them, she inhaled, eyes lighting up, and then grabbed him in a tight bear hug, practically squealing as she wrung what little life he had left out of him. He dissipated in her arms, the bundle of clothes all that was left. "Nice one Rhaimy!" Ian grinned, clapping him on the back and then slipping through the bars, joints popping as he pushed himself through, heading up towards the mansion, not waiting for them. Rhaimy was left alone with Elise, who was holding up the coat to inspect the damage, her glasses now aligned on her nose. "Um... Elise, I..." He rubbed his neck, looking at his feet. There was so many things he wanted to say, but no clue how to start on any of them. The guilt for bringing Teagan after her, his gratitude and admiration for how she defended him, an apology for stalling so long to help them, and so many other small thoughts that made his knees weak and his face burn. Turning to him with that soul gazing smirk, she threw the coat over her shoulder and took his chin in her finger and thumb, pressing her other index finger to his lips. "You don't need to say a thing Rhaimy. Not a thing" She smiled down at him, brushing the dirt from his cheek. She was right. He didn't need to speak. Somehow, he knew she didn't need to hear it. There was no secrets from her, no hiding, his every thought and fear and worry and musing completely clear to her. At first, this feeling had made him feel vulnerable, had made him want to hide, but now, he couldn't imagine a better feeling. "Okay..." he mumbled, smiling and looking down as a two duplicates behind her laid the coat on her shoulders and strapped in her arms. Elise paid them no mind, however. She had the real thing right in front of her. Why on Earth would she turn away? While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
