“I don’t
believe you…”
Mark rolled
his eyes and stretched his legs out under his desk, leaning back to give
Jubilee a bland look. “Why not? Have I ever given you reason to think me a
liar before?”
“No, but it’s
impossible for someone to have the power of telekinesis unless they’re a
mutant,” she said defiantly, shelving the last of the box of
encyclopedias. “There. Done.
Food fight is paid off.” She
smiled smugly and, ignoring the dust on her fingers, pushed her hair out of her
face, leaving a grayish streak amidst the black and now neon-blue strands. “I mean.. all these psychics and stuff, the
*real* ones…they have to be mutants.”
Mark raised
a brow and shrugged. “Maybe so. Or maybe there’s more things on Heaven and
Earth than dreamt of in your philosophies.”[1]
Jubilee
narrowed her eyes, cracking her gum between her back teeth, then shrugged in
mirror of Mark’s earlier gesture. “Maybe
so. I mean…Kitty sees gods, Amara’s from
an island that may or may not exist and you’re in love with a blue lizard…
things happen.”
His entire
demeanor changed, but only subtly.
Jubilee did not notice the stiffening of his posture and the sudden lack
of kindness in his eyes. “Pardon me?”
“Mystique. The blue lizard.” Jubilee stepped back from the shelves to
admire her handiwork, the confusing organization system still a mystery to her
but apparently she had done well enough to make Mark happy. He had praised her choice to put the
encyclopedias next to the fantasy section, which, she noticed, included many religious
texts. “I don’t think she’s scaly—I mean,
maybe a little but not like freakishly so or anything—but she changes, like a
chameleon.”
Mark
counted to ten in seven different languages before he spoke again. “I’m not in love with her, not that it is any
of your business. And you would do well
not to insult others. Words have a way
of coming back to haunt you.” He stood,
sweeping a sheaf of papers up into his arms and nodding curtly at Jubilee. “
You have a beach trip to get ready for.
I can do the rest of the cleaning up.
Off you go.”
She frowned
and tilted her head to one side, eyeing him consideringly. “You know…ever since
Remy’s started lurking around the library…you’ve been acting weird.” She blew a small bubble in her bright pink
gum, popped it, then gracefully spit it into the trash can several feet
away. “Lost it’s flavor,” she said as an
aside to Mark’s mildly disgusted look.
“Charming,”
he replied. “I am not, as you put it,
acting weird. I am acting like a man who
has a lot to do before he can call it a day and you, my dear, are acting like a
girl who does not want to go to the beach with her friends.” He reached out and tweaked her nose, making
Jubilee shout in surprise and jerk away.
“Go get yourself together. It’s almost one and Logan
is going to leave shortly after the hour.”
Jubilee
took a step towards the door, then paused, turning on her feel to face Mark
again. “You know… I think you need to unwind a little. You’re
so tight that you could turn a lump of coal into a diamond. Come with us.” She grinned at his mildly
horrified expression. “Oh, come on. No
one’s gonna think it’s weird. You’re my friend now and I want my friend to come
to the beach.”
He shook
his head slightly, his smile becoming fixed.
“Thanks for the offer, Jubilation, but I really do have a lot of work to
do today…” He nearly sighed aloud in relief
when the telephone on his desk rang.
Turning his back on the teenager, he hurried to the desk and grabbed up
the receiver before the third ring. “Xavier
Institute Library. How may I help you?”
Jubilee
rolled her eyes and leaned against the doorjamb, wishing she had not spit out
her gum. She knew Remy was nearby, being
suspicious. It had disgusted and
offended her several days before when he hinted, somewhat blatantly, that she
was in love or at least lust with Mark.
She had shot back a rather rude comment about the Cajun’s libido and
they had been in a war of silent glares ever since. It hurt her, being angry with each other like
this, and it was not what she intended to happen when she told him that she
needed a break. She wanted to ask him if
they could start over, pretend they had not fought, but she knew Remy. She knew he would sulk and pout and be
snarky, no matter how much he loved her.
She was so deep in her consideration of how to deal with Remy that she
almost missed Mark’s ashen countenance as he hung up the phone. The oddly jerky movement of his arm was what
grabbed her attention. He moved as if he
were forcing himself, his face bearing the expression of someone seeing a
horror. “Dude, Mark…what’s wrong?” She shoved herself away from the doorjamb and
crossed to the librarian, all nonchalance and insouciance gone. “Are you okay? Need to sit down?” She took his elbow and tried to guide him to
his chair, only to have him shake her grip off gently.
“I’m fine.” He cleared his throat and inhaled deeply, his
expression becoming like his usual self as he exhaled. “Apologies.
Just…didn’t expect that.” He eyed
the phone a moment then, in a carefully modulated tone, said “Go find Logan,
would you? Tell him the beach trip is
cancelled. He can come ask me why
himself. In private. Immediately.”
Jubilee
opened her mouth to protest but Mark’s sharp look made her think twice. “Is everything okay?” she asked, backing up
several steps towards the door. “I mean…
no one’s dead or anything?”
“Not yet,”
he said calmly. “Go.” Jubilee nodded and turned, flowing from her
normal stride into a smooth run within steps.
Mark sighed and sank down in his
desk chair, resting his head in his hands.
“It never ends…”
