A/N Goddess Foxfeather, Queen of Mad Plotbunnies, BUSIEST
WOMAN ALIVE ™, Prophetic Muse, Hamster Witch and Uberbeta… ‘bout damned time,
huh? LOL. Readers/Reviewers: Sorry it
took so long. Real Life ™ became a bit
hectic this past week or so! *glomp *
Thanks for waiting, though!
Kurt
stirred painfully, his entire body one giant knot of tension. His mouth was dry and bitter, his eyes felt
caked with sleep. His breath burned his
throathe the tried to yawn and instead groaned. He felt a cool hand on his forehead and for a moment, thought of
the woman he called mother for so short a time. Then reality struck.
Kitty found
herself flat on her back on the floor, pinned with Kurt’s knees on her
shoulders, his hand er ter throat.
“Hey!” she squeaked. “I was just
trying to see if you had a fever!”
Kurt rocked
back woozily. “Oh…” The room spun around him and went dark
before he even hit the floor this time.
Kitty sat
up painfully, her head throbbing from where he had knocked her over. “What was that about?” she demanded. “Geez…”
Logan’s
voice rumbled tiredly above her. “He’s
got a metabolism from Hell. He hasn’t
eaten in forever so he can’t function right.”
He leaned over her in the dark,
his eyes glinting sharply in the few shards of light that managed to seep
through the crack in the door. “He’ll
be okay once we get some food in him.”
“What was
that, Logan?” she asked a tad bit shakily, rummaging in her pockets for
something as she looked down at the unconscious youth. “It looked like…like…some sort of demon.”
“And he
doesn’t?” Logan snorted, indicating Kurt with a nod.
Kitty
smiled briefly, emerging from her search through her pockets triumphantly. She held several semi-melted caramels in one
d and and muttered, “I knew I was saving these for a reason.” She slid an arm behind Kurt’s back and moved
him into a half-sitting position. “Hey,
wake up,” she whispered. They were in
some narrow cell of a room, phased there in her panic during the fight. Logan had protested in several variations of
urgings to the physically impossible for her antics, but Kitty had refused to
phase him back. “Hey…blue kid…wake up…”
“I’m not,”
Kurt muttered, “a kid.” He opened one
bleary eye and tried to frown. “What
are you trying to do to me?”
“Trying,”
she sighed, “to help you. Can you chew,
do you think?” She held up a caramel with her free hand and waved it
enticingly. “Logan says you have a high metabolism and need to eat. This is the best I can do right now but as
soon as we get out of here, we’ll get some real stuff in you. Like pizza or something.” She knew she was babbling but she could not
help it.
Logan,
blessedly, saved her from further verbal flow by squatting down next to them
and peering closely at Kurt. “You
seemed real anxious to get back in here, kid.
What’s the deal?”
Kurt tried
to edge away but found himself held too tightly by Kitty to move much more than
a few inches. He inhaled sharply and
frowned. “Cookies,” he blurted.
Kitty
blinked. “What?” She stared down at the blazing yellow eyes
looking up at her, oddly transfixed.
“You smell
like cookies…” He sighed and took the
caramel from her, popping it in his mouth and chewing dutifully. “You should not have taken me from him. I came here because I need to be here…”
Logan
growled softly, rising to his feet and turning to feel along the door for some
way out. “Wherever here is,” he
muttered with a quick glare in Kitty’s direction.
“I’m sorry,”
she gritted out between clenched teeth.
She handed Kurt another caramel and added, “I freaked out, okay? I didn’t want you to kill that guy and I
didn’t want him,” she shook Kurt slightly, “to get taken away!”
Kurt
groaned and closed his eyes again. He
was so close… He had been right there,
that inner sense driving him telling him that he was safe… but no! She had to ‘save’ him! Even if she did smell sweet and safe and
wonderful, he would never forgive her… “Bitte!
Stop shaking me!” he muttered as she shook him again, thinking he was slipping
to sleep. “Go away! You don’t understand anything!”
Kitty was
horrified. “But…we’re trying to help
you!”
“He doesn’t
want to be helped,” Logan snapped. There
was no way to open the door from the inside and he could not tell quite how
thick it was. He looked at Kitty, considering telling her to phase him through,
but he could not take the chance of that red demon thing being on the other
side, waiting. He would not put her in
danger. “Stay back,” he ordered.
Kitty
winced as the claws came out. “That’s
not a good idea, Logan,” she warned. “What
if he’s out there?”
“Then I get
to him fir Log Logan responded, raising his arm to slash at the metal door.
“He’s out
there,” Kurt muttered. “I can feel him…”
Abe Sapien
strode briskly down the corridor, not looking behind him but knowing the small
group was trailing closely. He reached
out strong mental tendrils and found the young man easily before switching his
focus to his friend. _Keep going, _ he
intoned mentally. _Three doors
down. The girl phased them through the
floor into the fourth level storage room. _
Jean felt
the telepathy but did not hear it. It
was like some invisible wave washed over her, silent and clear. She narrowed her eyes and tried to catch a
thread of the impulse but it slipped away like so much vapor.
_Stay in
your own head please thank you. _ Abe felt himself smirk unwillingly at her
audacity. _Rushing ahead does not help
you in the end. _ He turned sharply
down the corridor to the left, sending another mental suggestion to Jean. _Maybe you would do better to contact your
friends two floors below and tell them to stay put. If that girl phases them one more level, they’re going to be
eaten by some very nasty trolls. _
Jean
stopped in her tracks and felt her jaw drop.
“Trolls?” she said aloud. “Trolls?”
“Keep
walking,” Abe ordered. “We’re almost
there.”
