Northern Territories – 04

Dawn was still two hours away when the Outpost escapees came upon a grassy meadow surrounding a large lake, the moon about to give it up as it sank into its own reflection in the still water. Logan figured they were a good 15 miles or so from the Outpost. Not far, but far enough for now.
Neither of them had spoken during the ride thru the night. Logan had actually fallen asleep at one point, leaning heavily on the girl in front of him. Now finally revived, he reached around her for the reins and brought them to a halt. He sniffed at the air. No people. Not alive, anyway.
It was common to stumble across human remains. Those that had chosen to hunker down and die at home counted in the untold millions. Those that didn’t, the wildlife had pretty much taken care of. Bones were a familiar find.
Marie scooted up a bit and turned sideways in the saddle. He hadn’t said a word and her worry for him had never lessened, but his steady breathing at her back let her believe he was ok. As ok as he could be. Almost not wanting to look, she reached cautiously for the edge of his jacket, not quieetieeting itself over his bare chest.
Sh She paused. “Lemme see?”
Logan had been dreading this. Well, this was it. She was either gonna try and run or she’d stay and hate his guts. Either outcome was more than he thought he could stand.
He gripped her wrist, hard, and shook his head no. Sliding from the back of the horse, he stepped away and tried to figure out how to handle this.
Marie climbed down. “Are you ok? We should get it cleaned up at least….” She trailed off, not understag thg the look on his face. It had become harsh and forbidding.
He suddenly yanked her to him, her eyes gone very wide. Capturing her wrists tightly against his chest, he bit out, “I may not be your kind, but you still belong to me. There’s nowhere to run, and nobody to protect you when you get there. Got it?”
She frowned at him, blinking in confusion. His sudden grabbing her had frightened her. “What – what are you talking about?” She didn’t know a thing about this man, and though she was drawn to him, willing to embrace their relationship, she didn’t know how he’d act, how he’d really treat her. She hoped he wasn’t going to turn out to be a monster of some kind.
He looked at her steadily for a moment and let go of her wrists. He pulled the side of his jacket away, to let her
Marie’s mouth fell open. It was gone. He was filthy with dried blood, but the wound, the damage – it was all gone. And it clicked. Mutant.
Almost giddy, elation lighting her face, she looked up at him. The glorious smile he saw blooming there threw him. Completely.
“You’re wrong about that. You are so wrong.” He didn’t know what she meant, but her gloved hands were sliding over his chest, shrugging the jacket off of him. She laughed, a sparkling sound that jarred his expectations. Then it dawned on him – why the Outpost had been willing to risk losing her. She wasn’t their kind, either. She was his kind.
Seeing the light of understanding on his face, she quickly explained about her skin. And why the Judge had thought it was something she had no control over, why they had thought her worthless.
“Holy shit.” A somewhat dazed look on his face, and that grin tugged at his mouth again. Marie threw her arms around his neck. She’d found him. Without doubt, she’d found him. She would be his mate through thick and thin, willingly, following him without question. His strength and power were hers, to flourish under the protection of. She wouldn’t be facing this dangerous and sparse world alone, not any more. Neither would he.
He wanted to take her right there, wanted to throw her down and make his claim on her. The abrupt ending to a lifetime of loneliness, a rootless, worthless existence, was a shock. He’d taken Bryman to his settlement hoping to get a woman for the night out of the deal. Overshooting that goal with a ridiculous demand had led, inexplicably, to his finding a willing partner, a mate. It was almost too much to wrap his mind around.
God, she felt good, pressed into him, holding onto him tightly. He hugged her back just as tight, a sudden ache in his chest that had nothing to do with his earlier injuries. His cold, dead heart was stirring into life. It felt fantastic.
She slipped from his tight grasp and started to unsaddle the horse and pulled off the saddlebags. Throwing the saddle blanket to the ground, Logan gathered loose branches and started a fire. He hobbled the horse to let it graze at will and crouched at the edge of the lake, splashing water over his chest and he got clean.
He stood and looked at her sitting on her heels by the fire, the warm glow lighting her angelic face. He wanted her so goddamn bad he could hardly stand it. She raised a now gloveless hand to him with a shy smile and he took it, kneeling down next to her.
They studied one another, a million and one unasked questions brimming under the surface. He reached and brushed a lock of her hair from her cheek. For the first time, it occurred to him that he didn’t know her name.
Somehow sensing the question, she asked first.
“Wanna tell me what to call you?”
If she’d let him take her, she could call him any damn thing she wanted. He cleared his throat.
“Logan.”
She smiled a tiny smile at him. She liked the sound of that name. Somehow, it suited him.
“Marie.”
He liked the sound of that. ‘Marie’ and ‘mine’ just wento tto the same sentence together. Perfectly.
His hand slipped into her hair, caressing the back of her neck, and he pulled her a bit closer. His gaze wandered to her mouth, her beautiful, full mouth. “Kiss me, Marie.”
Everything in her went light and tingly, and she hesitantly leaned up into him. His mouth met hers and his blood instantly ran hot and pounding as he deepened the kiss, licking into her mouth. Their arms suddenly grasped each other tightly and he crushed her to him.
Logan was swept away by the heat escalating between them. It had been so long, so god damned long, since he’d had a woman. And this one seemed to want him just as much, her whimpers as he almost brutally devoured her mouth were sounds of want, not fear.
Just about out of his mind, he broke off to lick and suck at her throat, and her head fell back in surrender to him. He couldn’t stand it. Pressing her to lie back on the rough horse blanket, his hands went to her ratty sweater and he drug it over her head, her hair cascading around her shoulders.
Dear God, she was beautiful. Hovering over her on his hands and knees, he dropped his mouth to her bared breasts, licking and sucking, her hands buried in his wild dark hair, holding him to her. She was shaking, his touch and his mouth evoking things she’d never experienced.
A spike of uncertainty shot up in her and she pushed at his chest. He raised his head and their eyes met. “Logan.” Her voice was almost non-existent. “Logan, I’ve never done this.” She was afraid that she wouldn’t please him; she didn’t know how.
He blinked at her, breathless. She was untouched? The thought only further inflamed him. ‘Mine’. But he also saw her heartbreaking self-doubt. She wasn’t afraid of him; she was afraid of not pleasing him.
Logan fought to get himself under wraps and sank down at her side, cupping a hand to her face. She held his eyes, looking for what, asn’asn’t sure. Guidance? Acceptance? Forgiveness, even? Her uncertainty about broke his heart; it was like she thought she wasn’t good enough for him or something. But it didn’t hit him near as hard as the fact that she warninrning to him to help see her through it.
Something turned over in his heart that he’d never felt before. They were strangers to each other but had somehow already forged a bond that was deep and elemental. They belonged together, f who whole lot of reasons. It was as simple as it was true. And it always would be.
He He nuzzled her face, wanting her to feel his willingness to do, to be, anything she needed. A whisper. “Trust me?”
Marie gratefully fell into his seeming understanding. And yes, she did, she would, trust him. With everything. Her chin trembled and she tried to say something. Gathering her courage, wanting to be as strong for him as he was for her, wanting to give herself to him, she found her voice.
“Yes, Logan. Oh yes, always.”
Her words nearly astonished him - and the way she said them lifted his heart like nothing ever had.
Under the light of a dying moon, he made her his.
